/though I still don't understand how two Earth ponies could have a pegasus and a unicorn. Assuming you're a vanilla white guy, that would be like if one of your twins were born black, and the other Asian.

Something strange is going on in Sugarcube Corner.

I'm with ace in your face. That mare is seriously undernourished. I'm amazed she's able to nurse!

I'd hope that's the only reason she looks like that, instead of it being a situation of shiatty owners.

I am a horse breeder and yes that mom is underfed or suffering from something.  Additionally anyone who breeds horses knows the danger of twins and will scan the mare a few weeks after breeding and remove one early in  the pregnancy. I am surprised the mother lived through it.

I'd bet it's the babies. I don't know much about horses per se, but ungulates and birth aren't as easy humans.

Huh? Ungulates generally give birth standing up, the calf just falls out. Humans have one of the most difficult birthing processes in the animal kingdom thanks to our wonky pelvises and huge heads, its the price we pay for walking upright and having big brains.

Humans can do it squatting, but that's not the point.

The mare is extremely emaciated, and the shiathead owners didn't even know for sure she was pregnant!  The national horse community is up in arms over her condition and the fact that this has been splashed all over by the Today show as an "Easter Miracle" or some crap when the true miracle is that she even survived birthing one of the foals, let alone two.  If you read the comments on the local news article AND the one from the Today Show, people who know horses know that these three are in extreme danger of dying of malnutrition. The foals (not ponies, dammit!!) are not going to get enough milk from the mare, and they really shouldn't be allowed to nurse from her at all.  They need either a nurse mare (one that lost a foal) or to be bucket fed every two hours around the clock, not "seven times a day" like these yahoos are planning on doing.

Agree. I had two foaling mares this spring. Even with constant monitoring of diet, vets several times a week and staying up all night on foal watch I still lost one of the foals. So I guess in a sense the fact that these two were born alive is a miracle. albeit one caused by the owners negligence.  I hope they follow up in two weeks to see if they lived.  The local humane society should be investigating this case.

and to earlier comment .  most but not all horses lie down to give birth and many need human assistance.  I have a box of rubber gloves that go to my armpits to wear when foaling. I will let you fill in the details on that.

I agree. She should not be nursing either of the babies. Whether or not she was healthy before the pregnancy, it obviously took all of the nutrients she was getting. This couple is so worried about the healthy twins and appear to have no regard for their mother.

2013-04-05 10:52:06 AM
Ugh, when I saw this picture all I could think of was how malnurished that horse looks. And no, healthy a pregnant mare would not look like that after giving birth. Instead of trumpeting the birth of the foals/colts they should be charging her with cruelty to animals and removing them to a rescue.

As for the Brony stuff...meh..to each his own.

Apparently all kinds of Humane and Rescue organizations have been contacted and have intervened. I copied this from another comment thread:
.

"I contacted the Georgia Equine Rescue and here is what they told me:

"This has already been reported to the Ga. Dept. of Ag (GDA) and an inspector was there first thing this morning. Violations have been left with the owners and a vet has also been out to examine the mare and foals. This appears to be a situation of ignorance. The owners have already been to the feed store and purchased all of the feeds, vitamins, etc. for the mare (and foals) as recommended by the inspector. Animal Control was also called and they went out to the farm, too. The GDA is required to allow the owners to comply and that is what is happening right now.
Thank you for your concern and for reporting this to me. I will be monitoring this closely with my contacts at the GDA.

Well, if nothing else, the media attention got the Mare the attention she needed. Without that, who knows how long the owners would have kept blundering around?
