Babwa Wawa: If Microsoft copies everything they do, who did they steal the Metro interface from?

"If, as I claim that you claim, Microsoft steals all its good ideas from other companies... then who did they copy a bad idea from?"

The One True TheDavid: "Copying what the cool kids do?" Gee, y'all Farkers wouldn't know anything about huh, wouldja.

derpy: Kinect?  Took Wii and ran with it.

Yeah, because there are cameras, facial detection and voice recognition in a Wii sensor bar.

Point of fact: Nintendo passed on the Kinect, as did Sony and Apple.

skozlaw: Becoming?

I'm a bit confused.... at what point in time was Microsoft ever an innovator?

In order to get a fairly powerful product under 4KB, Altair BASIC used tricks that nobody had ever seen before. Bill Gates' reputation as a computer genius derives from the stunts he was pulling when he was broke and unknown, and he deserves it.

So, in answer to your question, 1975. Although I personally couldn't care less if I'm buying a product I want from an "innovator" or an opportunistic third party. That's what licensing and patents are for.

Because all those sites that don't have Apple in their name are totally unbiased.

Wholesale Ass: Karne: just worried about you!

Sometimes i go to sites like this for entertainment or other YouTube randomizers in search for those one in a million videos that actually are funny or entertaining but what I am finding is that the majority of shiat out there is just that. -Kids wandering around the mall doing nothing and they have 100,000 views.

Cool, just don't go all 'unibomber' about it and kill someone over it.  Or slightly less dangerous, talk all internet tough guy about it.

The My Little Pony Killer: when the hell did Google become one of the cool kids?

Google used to be one of the cool kids. Remember when they completely reinvented search with a uniquely simple interface, brilliant data and algorithms, and a page design that prioritized the results over everything else? They were a disruptive company that had an active skunkworks culture that churned out cool ideas, and then just slapped some subtle ads in there to keep it profitable.

Then the advertising business ate everything else, and Google stopped being cool. Now they're in the business of selling your eyeballs to the highest bidder.

For crying out loud, virtually every major Microsoft product, EVER, has basically been a copy/clone of another product there to try to steal someone elses thunder.

MS-DOS: Microsoft bought the rights to 86-DOS and created a variant/clone for the PC.
Windows: Launched originally to compete against the Apple Macintosh
MSN: The MS clone of AOL
Internet Explorer: MS playing catch-up after Mosaic and Netscape started things, only taking control through MS bundling it with Windows.
Zune: The iPod ripoff nobody bought.
Word: Their ripoff of WordPerfect
Excel: Their ripoff of Lotus 1-2-3
Microsoft Flight Simulator: They bought a license to a flight simulator made by subLOGIC for the Apple II and Commodore 64 and ported it to the PC, then began to expand on it.
X-Box/X-Box 360: Their competitor of the Playstation and Playstation 2

For crying out loud, when did Microsoft completely innovate and create something of a wholly original design?

Bob?

skozlaw: Marine1: Yeah. Don't you remember all of that console-based online gaming you did before the Xbox, too?

Gamespy

And if you had a Dreamcast, SegaNet.

Don't confuse making another person's ideas wildly successful with actually having those ideas.  Microsoft has always excelled at identifying other people's good ideas and turning them into quality products. Microsoft has always been pretty bad at having their own ideas.

Oh man, Gamespy.  Lol that brings back some memories.  I recall a time when you couldn't buy a  PC related magazine on the market without a cdrom with a gamespy install on it.  A guy would literally come to your house if you owned a cdrom without gamespy on it lol.  Thanks for the memories :)

I hear what you are screaming but many companies developed many of these basic farking applications and programs back in the early days.  Ever heard of visicalc, lotus?  And apple is no better than them about it but I am sure you probably know that.  The game used to be buying up the coders or buying out the company, but now is patent trolling and selling browser plugins.
I've said it before and I'll get roasted for it again probably but ever since unix was stolen and released as linux and adopted buy "other than windows" companies, they have basically sat on their thumbs as well, updating the UI and "compatibility" ;)

I did like the mention of Bob, though.  That was pretty funny and brought back some horrid memories of that drunken hobo, clippy lol.

There were webcam games on par with what the eyetoy had long before the PS2 was even in design.

Not quite. The main difference between Apple and MS in this regard is that while Apple isn't the first to think of something, they're often (usually?) the first to get it right. The PC, the GUI, the MP3 player, the tablet, etc. MS, OTOH, will just crank out a shiatty imitation and use it's muscle to force it into the market. If Bill Gates hadn't pulled a fast one on IBM, Microsoft would just have been another forgotten IT company of the 70s and 80s.

And if Wonzniak had found out that Jobs was an unethical thieving bastard, Apple might never have existed.

During the dot com boom I worked in a cubical farm using NT. Had that little paper clip in the lower right corner. I had no friends in the place other than that little paper clip. I enjoyed when the little paper clip piped up to talk to me.

One day I was trying to fix some bullshiat settings on that infernal machine and I deleted the paper clip ability to appear. I don't know what I did (does anybody know what they did when messing around with Windows?).

I missed that fella, but there was no way I was calling IT to get my only friend in the company back on my monitor.

I left that job some 13 years ago. I hope my friend found a good home.

/Only thing MS ever did, gave me a friend when I needed one.
