All religions suck to some degree but Scientology is by far the worst, at least in the western world.

/I was in St. Peter's Square for the Pope's Tuesday Mass a few weeks ago, it was pretty cool actually
//agnostic, was there for the "historical value" rather than any religious reason

SpankyPinkbottom: I landed up in treatment with a dude who got sucked into Narconon without knowing what it was. They treated his withdrawal from heroin and benzos with vitamins. When he inevitably had a seizure, they attempted treat that with yet more vitamins. They refused to take him to the local emergency room until he threatened a lawsuit.

Too bad he didn't follow through!

saturn badger: Mad_Radhu: Before I read Going Clear, I wrote Scientology off as a scam, but now I'm convinced it is an insane cult. David Miscivage is deeply unhinged. He turns on people for the smallest of things and is physically violent (hitting and choking people out of the blue) and a huge fame whore. The whole religion is a reflection of his and L Ron's mental illness. It's a deeply sick organization.

Now it is time for Beyond Belief. Good book by Jenna Miscavige. Davids neice.

I've got that one next on my list.

Confabulat: Those charlatans claim Hubbard's teachings about drug addiction have nothing to do with his teachings about Scientology.

No, they really claim that.

Well of course.  One is the basis for a religion and the other is a complete fabrication.

Georgia is about to kick them out of state for lying to a California couple that their son was going to an in patient treatment center.  They basically scratched out 'out patient' on their letterhead.  They are about to get their butts handed to them because they were caught lying in the pre-trial setting and were issued a 'death penalty' that doesn't allow them to present a defense.

csb to follow-

The rehab clinic in question was at one time (late 80s or early 90s)  an Indian Nation owned vacation/casino resort. It was on a road I traveled 2-3 times a year during a regular cross country journey. I stopped there on a few occasions to break up the trip, play the ponies on OTB and gamble a bit. At some point, the property was purchased by the Church and transformed into this rehab complex.

SO anyway, one day I am traveling through OKLA and decide to take a break at the casino. I drive to the Lodge back up in the woods and it looks different. I pull up to the front to valet park and am greeted by the two spookiest people I had ever met. They started politely asking questions, but it scared me. I knew something was amiss and it damn sure wasn't a casino.. I hightailed it out of there and never looked back.. It was a few months later I heard about Narconon and realized what I had stumbled into.

//end csb

So it's basically like all the other religions?

Well, that's good.

All for-profit treatment centers overstate their success rate. Nothing to see her

We'll see how things work out, but I actually like the cut of Pope Francis's gib so far. If he cleans house with everyone related to the abuse scandal, I'll be really happy with him.

What can you say about a "religion" that maintains it's very own concentration camp.
