(Mirror.co.uk)   If you've cut millions in benefits and services to the disabled because you claim the system is "broken" and abused by "scroungers", you probably shouldn't let your chauffeur park your £50,000 land rover in a disabled parking space   (mirror.co.uk) divider line 58

Cool story bro time:

I used to drive my grandmother around after she finally lost her licence to drive. We'd use her disabled permit to go to the grocery store, hair parlor, ect.

Anyway; I'd always go and get her prescriptions by myself, because granny always had questions about her meds that the 20-something gal that ran the counter couldn't answer, or had been answered by the doctor. I'd use her disabled permit; so the errand didn't take too long ( granny would wonder where I'd gotten to). One time; some lady tried to make a federal case about me using the permit. I explained that I was getting meds for my granny and the lady could go have relations with a fire hydrant.

/ I wasn't there long; besides, there were 12 other disabled spots

This, ladies and gentleman, is the kind of thinking that leads to benefit abuse. You might be willing to sacrifice parking space for genuinely disabled people, but did you agree to sacrifice them for people with frail grans? You were never even asked that question. iheartscotch has answered it on your behalf.

Agreed.  As for the douchebag politician in the article, well, he's a politician.  He's got ethical disabilities at the very least, with a high likelihood of emotional/mental disorders to go with it.

Yeah this is just blatently unscrupulous political smear tactics. It's not a good idea to believe a word any British tabloid says anyway, this time the rag is a Left wing one so is gunning for a Right wing politico. (I wonder if it doesn't show it says how badly the Left has failed if they are this desperate.)
Sucks to be that chauffeur, but a professional driver really should know better than to park in a disabled bay. Unless there's some security reason/exemption?

This is part of the normal British political way.

Labour Party: Free money for every one

Every one: Yay

Economy collapses

Conservative Party: Now we are in power free money stops. Hardship all round

Economy recovers

Every one: We don't like you, go away

Conservative party: But we fixed the mess

Labour Party: Free money for every one!

Etc etc

Yet, oddly, there were two recessions during the Conservative's time in power, one of which saw the highest rate of unemployment in the post-war period. Brown undoubtedly overspent, but he made the mistake of believing the economists and the bankers while basking in a period of sustained growth.

Maybe there's a happy medium...nevermind.

FarkinNortherner: Yet, oddly, there were two recessions during the Conservative's time in power, one of which saw the highest rate of unemployment in the post-war period.

Economic consequences have delayed and long term effects. It's just a bit silly to blame the party in power for everything that happens when they're in office.

Brown undoubtedly overspent, but he made the mistake of believing the economists and the bankers while basking in a period of sustained growth.
Every party overspends to some extent, but given enough time in office Labour always takes it too far. Brown's problem was, after a promising start he acted as though a period of growth was the new normal and did the same old trick of using borrowed money to buy popularity, rather than using the good times to save.

Maybe there's a happy medium...nevermind.
Right now a sustainable medium would be financially way to the right of Osbourne as the UK is in much worse finacial straits than he is letting on. He wants to be the nice guy too and is scared of Labour successfully portraying him as "heartless Thatcherite scum" etc etc.

If you had your granny with you and she was sitting in the passenger seat while you ran in, you'd probably be legal (perhaps not justified).  The fact that you are able-bodied means that you were misusing the permit and misusing the space.  Even with 12 spots free you're still in the wrong.

So that would be like the "Thatcher Boom" where a few people made out like bandits (only for about one year in the period did the employment figures actually become half decent), everyone else's income was static, lots of government assets were sold off for a fraction of their value to ensure the people that could afford to buy them were guaranteed to make money initially (and fark the poor who would pay for those company profits with higher prices in the future), and even at the peak of the "boom" there were over 2m unemployed, and up to 3.5 million either side of that, which is far worse than it ever got in the recent recession at 2.5m and it was as low as 1.5m during the "Great Moderation" (despite there being a significantly bigger population by that point)?

Oh and debt after New Labour was lower (as percentage of GDP) when the economy collapsed than when they took charge, and that reduction wasn't much to do with economic growth either as that was solid but not spectacular, but rather Browns relatively modest Budgets for the first half of New Labours reign (whether they would have been so without having to fix Labours economic image problem is an open question). Even in the years before the crash the easier spending of New Labour wasn't ramping up debt anywhere near as fast as, say, Majors time in office

The worst aspect of New Labour was where they continued policies started by Thatcher - basically a big debt bubble fueled by unsustainable borrowing and financial deregulation, growing the banking sector to banana republic levels (obviously not as badly as Iceland or Cyprus did), and creating a culture that everyone should try and buy their own home (no matter their income or financial stability), etc.

/Generally actually a Lib Dem voter, although lean Labour on some issues, although as it happens my vote is all but irrelevant anyway due to where I live currently
