The original WWW browser, Mosaic 0.5, was released 20 years ago, and the code name for the initial development of Netscape was supposedly Mozilla for "Mosaic Killa"... at least that's the story on wikipedia.

I thought netscape was built on gecko and firefox was as well... huh, I should read more.

The work group that came up with Mosaic was from the University of Illinois in the early 90's.  A chunk of them broke off into the private sector to form Netscape.  Netscape got mowed over by Microsoft in the browser wars.  Some of those Netscape folk decided to go open source and started the Mozilla Foundation, which begat Firefox and a bunch of other creative offshoots.

/csb:  My housemate was one of the junior members of the NCSA team that remained at the University when the Netscape crew left.

And the Beast quietly made a deal with Mammon's 3rd aspect, whose spirit name was Google, and the Beast was given Hundreds of Millions of Dollars, so that Mammon's aspect might continue to be the Provider of Search to the Beast's minions, for Mammon liked to dispense tiny ads from three of his six mouths. Best Firefox feature, for me, is the ability to 'keyword' bookmarks.

/ Much easier typing a letter or two than wasting time looking for a bookmark.   F = fark.com  Wx = my local weather, etc.

1. A lot. And Gmail and Google Reader are big damn hogs.
2. I *think* Firefox will "reserve" a certain about of free memory on its own without doing anything. It'll just plain use more on an 8GB system than on a 2GB system by default without doing anything special.

I've been glues to Firefox 20 since the last Firefox thread and I haven't had any trouble yet. I already have issues where I get a certain set of programs running at work and have to start deciding what needs to close, but that happens to me with Chrome, too. With Chrome, though, I know I can close about 5 or 8 tabs and return to normal. I don't know yet if closing 5-8 Firefox tabs has the same effect.

When I upgraded my linux box to 12GB, I ran an acid test against firefox and chrome.

I opened every single link on my news RSS feeds (source of many of my Fark submissions).

When you close a window with multiple tabs, firefox gives you a warning that helpfully includes the number of tabs.

I just don't close things until I'm totally done with them. Seems more cumbersome to bookmark things into tidy folders than to leave it all there. Let the computer remember stuff so I don't have to.

ZOMFG I thought I had blocked all that out.

The small company I started at in Dec '94 were using FTP Software's PC/TCP client to provide a full-featured TCP/IP client and each install had its own license key. As soon as Win95 went gold master, I made the decision to abandon Win 3.1 + PC/TCP just to keep my sanity from tracking all that crap. We were growing like wildfire in 1995 (120 in one week IIRC).

Then we moved into the campus and were so tired of configuring fixed IPs we decided to try BOOTP to manage addressing then jumped on DHCP when it stablized.

There was this Jerry guy who wanted to put his SGI Challenge S in our data center simply because we had the 2nd T3 in Silicon Valley (HP was the first, it was about $25K/month). It was Jerry Yang -- that server sitting under a grey folding work table was his prototype Yahoo server while he was still @ Stanford.

I wake up and turn on the computer before coffee and the kids need my attention, so I hit my sites and open up a shiatload of tabs to read later after breakfast is served and kids are dressed and at school.

I wrote an epic how-to article on configuring Trumpet Winsock for a magazine back in the BBS days.  It became the biggest reprint money-maker in the mag's history. ISPs bought thousands of copies, and sent me letters thanking me for cutting their tech support calls by a third or more.  LETTERS, mind you, not effortless emails!

Nowadays, farkers would just steal the Web pages and not even provide a credit, let alone a link to the original.
