The funny thing is that I own a PS3 now. I bought it from someone who just had it collecting dust. I played a few exclusives on it (Heavy Rain & the Drake's Series). And now it's collecting dust for me as well :P

I bought a ps3 over a year ago mainly to play the 2 final fantasy games, however I also planned to buy cheap classics for it as well to have around. That hasn't really happened yet, I don't quite have money to splurge. I dont regret buying it, but yea its collecting dust.

//pc gamer

I just gave my xBox 360 to my nephews because once I got an xBox controller for the PC, I realized I could just play the console games at the computer, so I stopped using the xBox.  My eyesight is so bad that sitting closer to a smaller screen for a game is preferable to sitting far back from a large TV.

I did get them the Kinect before I gave it to them, and that looks like a good addition, but I'm farking 45 years old.  It has limited appeal to me at this moment.

I'm 39 and Kinect still has its uses, like the Nike fitness app.

PlayStation 4 has no games out right now.  Why would I buy one?

xkillyourfacex: Gig103: Having a single hardware combination vastly reduces the complexities of software testing (compatibility, bugs that might arise from different architectures), as well as the complexity of the underlaying OS. Windows can do it because it was designed to support a lot of different drivers, but embedded OSes can be a lot faster, smaller, and reliable if they are hardcoded to specific drivers.

Standard marketing department jibber jabber. I respectfully disagree. It can be done. If it can be done outside console world, it can be done inside console world. There's nothing special about game systems. In the end we're just talking about computers after all.

Do you know why I buy a console?  So I can play games for 5-10 years without having to do jack squat.  you are proposing a COMPUTER.  Something I have eschewed.  Go ahead, google that word.

God, you're retarded.

Fair enough, but I don't have the room for the Kinect, since my gaming periods are limited to my "home office" which is a glorified closet.  I'm waiting for the next generation, which I hope will also support the PC.

Dark Arisen (Dragon's Dogma expansion) is coming out this month, PS3s gonna get turned on again for the first time in awhile.  If you like western RPGs with action combat (Capcom), give it a look.  Dark Arisen is the original game + expansion content in one.

Agreed.  I knew the Xbox was the next step in gaming because every model had a hard drive.  When it was revealed that the 360 wasn't going to require a hard drive, I was surprised that they would do that to their game designers.  A big step back.

Consoles are expensive, HL3 has been delayed for a very long time, and Kinect is wasted potential.
These are all ripe for jokes, but it wasn't done very well here. It lacks subtlety and delivery.

Still, there's potential. Keep working at it, dude.

Endorsing this comment.  Not quite the combat and mechanical refinement of the Souls games, but has a great open-world feel and, unlike the Skyrims and Fables and Amalurs of the world, actually feels like a dangerous world.  Go play if you haven't already.

[www.ffxionline.com image 250x272]

I doubt Valve is making an exclusive for anybody, particularly when the SteamBox is coming out.

That said, Episode 3 was already announced and is up for PRE-ORDER ON STEAM for a late October release. I doubt Half-Life 3 will have any sort of release date until after Episode 3 ships.

You're lucky I never believed that for a second...

Eh... When, and if it is actually announced, Episode 3 has become Duke Nukem Forever for me. It got delayed so many times over years, and pretty much forgotten about by the developers, that I stopped giving a damn. It was supposed to come out over 6 years ago, so yeah... if the developers don't give a shiat about their products, why should I?

/maybe if it is included for $2.99 in a sales pack

Lsherm: Fair enough, but I don't have the room for the Kinect,

Since I moved into my condo and have a living room damn near 15'Wx25'L, I finally have room for it. Neat device, but yeah, if you have low ceilings (if you can easily touch it without trying) and/or less than 10' of space from the couch to the TV, a LOT of games for it won't work since you pretty much have to be more than 6 feet away and the "play" area is around 8'Wx5'L.

I'm more psyched for its potential as a Tony Stark-like control device for a UI for computers. Most of the ones currently are "meh" at best, but compared with a decent near-AI program and voice commands, it can pretty easily duplicate JARVIS.

It's been done with consoles before with various addons such as the Mega CD, 32X, Jaguar CD and even early addons such as the Supercharger for the Atari 2600 and Mattel's Intellivoice addon for Intellivision.

The problem is that they fragment the console market. Everyone has the base unit but only a certain percentage have the upgrade. So developers are far more likely to ignore the new kit to avoid limiting their sales. Sometimes you get games with extra features for newer hardware, such as what happened on the Atari STE and Nintendo DSi, but overall even when the new upgrades add notable power the market limits its use.

As an example, there is a demo tape of what the 32X added to the Mega Drive at

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F96yVYxNWPI

It's obvious that it added tremendous power to the Mega Drive, particularly considering that what is shown there is early use of the technology and over time as programmers learned the machine the games would improve further. Yet it failed on such a grand scale that it started an unstoppable decline that killed Sega as a hardware developer. Even the magnificent Dreamcast couldn't save them.

Counter_Intelligent: Not gonna care that much.   This generation made me forget why I liked consoles in the first place:  Japanese games.  Whoever gets the most support from companies like Namco (for Tales games), Atlus, Level 5, and the like will get my money.  But definitely not on launch.

It's okay. This generation also made Japanese game devs why they were doing game for consoles in the first place.

Seriously, it's as if Japan ran out of ideas and can't just adapt to the new paradigms of gaming. Not counting Nintendo, of course, since Nintendo lives in its own mansion with its own toys and isn't affected by "trends". They're the largest game dev in the world and have their own console. fark the world.

Meanwhile, Capcom, Konami, Namco Bandai, Sega, et al, are flailing in desperation trying to fit into the American paradigm.

Blame Microsoft and the Xbox. For years, consoles were a Japanese dominated realm while PC was the American kingdom. With the Xbox, PC devs could port games no problem and since PC games are more complex than classic console games, it was a no-contest the Japanese were going to lose out.

Since the PS2 was a gigantic success, Sony could afford to minimize the PC assault and it became the shelter for Japanese devs.

But because the PS3 stumbled and fell down, Sony got cold feet and went all me-too on Microsoft strategy. Plus the Wii just humbled them in terms of console sales.

You still were a rich bastard for owning one. Now I'm just player hatin because I didn't have one.

My most expensive game system that I worked to get back in the day was the Turbo Grafixxs 16, and I felt I was cheated after buying it. Do you know how many hours I had to put in as a 16 year old Andy Frain usher to get that? I sold my dignity for that shiat, and it wasn't worth it.

Anyway, the real players had a NeoGeo.

screw consoles.

I just upgraded my PC - new everything, really, except the hard drive (and its OS and all the software). Cost me under $600 to play Bioshock Infinite on the Ultra setting.  (and Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider were free with the GPU.)

Steam has made PC gaming possible again. Hallelujah!

You realise that most console generations prior to this one have been substantially shorter?   It was only 4 years between the PAL release of the Mega Drive and the JPN release of the Saturn.

This extended phase is a peculiarity of this generation of machines not a constant of consoles in general.

I was lucky enough to find one for sale used near the end of its commercial life for a tiny fraction of the original price. By then people with more money than I had moved on to the Playstation and Saturn but I loved my 3DO and the many cheap games I could find in clearance bins as the stores were just about to shed their stock.

It'd be better to make consoles modular at this point; swap in new processors, gpu's, and different peripherals, etc etc. Upgrades are cheap and so is manufacturing cost, and the company gets to keep its cash flow as new and better games come out. I don't get why companies go in this all-in-one approach to console gaming. It's just not good long term if they can't get us good prices.

A) You're describing PCs

B) The only advantage consoles have over PCs is unified hardware expectations. It's far easier to optimize code to work on one specific machine than millions of possible machines.

Actually I remember around 2000 you could get a 3DO for about $100 with about the whole library of games. A NEO GEO about that time with 10 games would run you about $200.

then a funny thing happened about 2  years ago. Suddenly both these systems became popular again with the hipsters, and on ebay they suddenly started going for 1200+, especially the Neo Geo. Now once again they are around $200 with 10 or or game included.

If anybody has one with games, and wants to deal before putting it on Ebay, give me a hit. EIP

By comparison Apple charges $600 for their 32gb ipad that and people line up outside the apple store every year to happily pay for a slightly different product every year.
