Brian Blessed's Bastard Boy: Finally got the truth out of THE MOTHER about how everything happened with shiatake coming to our home.  ****Small thread jack alert******  I have suffered from clinical depression for years, and mom was there for a lot of it before I left for the military, but she hasn't seen much of me, but knows I still suffer from it.  She said that when she saw how I was struggling with Sake' passing, she saw the same thing from when I was a kid and things got really bad for me.  She was scared that I would slide back again after just coming out of it last year before the wife went through all her surgeries, but not come out of it like I did before.  I was touched, but told her that it was something that happened and not anything that people who don't suffer from it go through when they lose a loved one.  I think with everything we've been through as a family, including what the wife went and is going through, as well as losing my step dad last year, she's terrified herself of being helpless as things still try to even out and we find some semblance of normalcy in our crazy animal filled world.  My daughter was the one who suggested the cat, mainly because she saw the words Maine Coon, and knew the wife wanted one, but also thought that since it was a male, it would bond with me.  He's a loving cat, but I'm thinking he'll be more the wife's than mine.  I told her it was OK, and as long as he keeps wanting belly skritches and head bumps, then everything will be fine.  ****End of thread jack****

First night with shiatake in the room and it went about as well as I expected.  Head butts, kitty howls, tail slaps for attention all night.  Yep, I'd say we got a bedroom cat.  Now to go and power chug about 6 cups of coffee and get some breakfast so I can at least fake being conscious.

Poor little Cracker Jack. He still doesn't trust hubby or me, because we took him to the vet yesterday. He's fine with us when we're sitting or lying down, but when we're standing up he gives us this "are you going to put me in that carrier again" look.

On the plus side, he's eating, drinking and using the litterbox like a healthy kitteh should.

lethological_lassie: Bathia_Mapes: kevinboehm: Name it whatever you like, it's not like it's going to listen.

Not necessarily true. Some cats respond to the name you give them, others do not.

I once called my kitten by saying "C'mere Milk!" and he trotted into the kitchen. It's often about the tone of voice and the sound of food or treats hitting the dish more than the name. ;)

The 'clink-clink' of my clowder's glass* food dishes brings them on the run.   So does the can opener.
If it's not tuna (and they get the 'juice' from that anyway) I'll let them sniff the lid.
"Oh...it's NOT tuna.  Alright, carry on"...and they wander off.
I don't know whether they regard this as a drill or a false alarm, but I'm always forgiven and left to get on with it.
The long-distance (they're outside) summoning spell of"Who wants a snack?" works well also.  :-)

AND...about 80% of the time, they do respond to their names.  Sometimes 'response' is just an ear-flick...but that usually indicates they're involved with 'cat business'...which takes precedence.

* 'Fancy' pressed-glass ashtrays I bought at the dollar store.  Wanted something pretty for them, just for a giggle...but this turned out well.  They wash easily and are heavy enough not to slide across the floor during the 'lick the dish clean' stage.

Just wanted to let you all know that.

You know.... just wanted to let you all know you're on my mind.

July will make 5 years C-free for me (yayyy). The mrs. had a hysterectomy in Feb to remove 'pre-cancerous growths', which turned out to be stage1 uterine. So, she's starting her 5 years of follow up tests at he time I'm wrapping up mine.

That big dog taught more kids, AND adults, to be kind to kitty cats than any human ever could have. Especially in the 50s, when humans were very limited in what they could teach each other.

The wireless cut over last night could not have gone better. We shut down the old at 11:55pm and all devices were online with the new system by 12:05am. We quickly canvased the hospital checking coverage, then just sat around munching snacks while waiting for trouble calls that never came. I was home and in bed by 4:00am.

It has been an absolutely brutal 12 weeks. I'm having fun this morning reading all the empty congratulatory emails from the suits in the ivory tower. They set this timeline to cover their own asses (long story) knowing we has one single chance in hell of pulling it off. As of this morning they can all kiss my ass.

I never want to do this again.

BBBB & Mrs, you say Shiatake wishes to be a Bedroom Cat, at least early on? Piiki has turned into one of those, due to her very long-lasting intestinal varmints.  She arove in Oct 2009, after the GangOf5. Now doesn't wish to Mingle, being quite wary of all larger than she (Ginger, Wakko & Yakko). She below, taken summer 2011.
