So maybe going by the numbers that people have posted they actually aren't showing more commercials than normal but their format of 5 minutes of show then commercial break blows. As soon as a scene starts to get interesting they go to commercial.   I would be happy enough if it was longer commercial breaks but less often.

I was waiting for that dumb white biatch to die for a while now.

I loved how Andrea literally talked herself to death.

Yep. To the very end she was a lawyer rather than a survivor. There were signs she "got it" but ultimately too much food and sex at the village turned her right back into law talking zombie food.

Carl is the only real survivor. (ninja is close) But Carl is the only one who really understands what is going on. It's no coincidence he is the second youngest cast member. And his relationship with the Ninja should be the one to watch. Short hair lady and Daryl too. Rick is nothing but window dressing now.

I imagine the writers are going to grow a set of balls for the fourth season.

ActionJoe: Raise your hand if seeing commercials actively makes you want to buy or look up that product...

I can't remember any time I have seen a commercial, especially a car or food, commercial that has made me think. "Hmm that looks awesome, let me go buy it!". Most commercials just turn me off to whatever they are selling. So are advertisements really that profitable for companies? Do people really buy more Hondas because they saw a Honda commercial?

Don't know, don't care. Add money makes it possible. As long as they are happy, I get my show and I'm happy.

inertia.  My wife and I watched (almost) every commercial during Community, Parks & Rec, and The Office tonight because we started watching at 7:00 and there wasn't a compelling reason to watch something else while the episodes piled up on the DVR.  We did pause The Office at one point and fast forwarded most of the rest of the commercials.

Mostly it's mainly about brand awareness. Commercials aren't meant to make go run out and buy the product, they're meant to stick in your head and influence you to choose those products later when you're shopping.

I guess they could be affecting me subconsciously but consciously? Commercials have only ever made me decide not to buy a brand.

I love it when people complain about commercials during programs but sports is never mentioned. It must suck to be watching it live, and hey! Another 3 minute break in the game so the TV networks can remind you it was sponsored by Pepsi and State Farm every 10 minutes. It is to the point where I don't believe people watch sports on TV for the game anymore. Take for example the Super Bowl. It hasn't been about football in years, it has been about who can make the most shocking/funny commercial, and when the game is actually on, THAT is the time people spend getting snacks in the kitchen or playing Angry Birds while taking a shiat.

The only way I can actually watch football anymore is the Red Zone channel. 7+ hours, no commercials, limits your exposure to terrible announcers to the bare minimum. Soccer has the right idea.

Barry McCackiner: Seriously?  People are complaining about commercials?  Farking DVR it, jesus.  For as long as I remember, shows with commercials have always been about 2/3 show and 1/3 commercial, give or take a few minutes in either direction.

The hating is just because the show is popular.  Yeah I don't agree with everything they do in the show.  But the fact that I watch it and critique it, is the mark of a good show.  The bad ones are the shows you don't care to watch, and there are a freaking ton of those.  There has never been a show like Walking Dead before and they are doing a great job.  This last half of the 3rd season was the best it has been so far.  Good mix of drama and action, got a little less manic about jumping around and started concentrating on specific characters in specific episodes.  If there is anything you can say about the show it is that their original cast of actors wasn't that great.  But the ones that are still around are doing better and the ones that have sucked have been dying off.

Anyways, I'm glad it is getting great ratings, it just means more to watch in the future.  Yay

THIS.  THIS.  THIS.

To all you folks complaing about commercials, there is this revolutionary device called a "DVR".

With this magical device you can record a show WITHOUT NEEDING A VCR TAPE!

Commercials? A THING OF THE PAST!

Miss what a character said? REWIND IT!

Want to binge watch multiple episodes of a show? RECORD THEM WEEK AFTER WEEK THEN WATCH THEM ALL AT ONCE!

IT'S AMAZING!

Well they are still roughly following the comic arc, even with deviations like Andrea's death. So that said they got some heavy shiat to deal with in this coming season.

justtray: It's really too bad it sucks so bad.

I was really into this show. But last Sunday something happened, I DVR'd it instead of watching it. I was in the middle of a Supernatural marathon on Netflix. I just discovered that show, and am hooked. But I realized, stuff happens in every episode. Character development doesn't force the action to stop. Thats why TWD isn't a great show. Having a good, or great episode, then having a string of episodes where litetally nothing happens isn't excellent television. In fact, it's made me lose interest enough that the finale is still waiting on my DVR. Season 2 and most of season 3 have sucked the life out of this once pretty damn cool show.

Interesting to see what the haters are focused on. Look at all the "Where's Carl" stuff upthread. biatching about that just make it obvious that you're way behind, and your opinion is irrelevant. So yeah, if you want to be a GOOD hater, you have to watch the show to keep up on the things you're going to biatch about.

demonfaerie: That is still a lot of commercials for an hour long show than it use to be in the 90s.

In case you haven't noticed, it's no longer the 90s.  15-20 minutes of commercials in a 60 minute show is pretty standard these days. I edit commercials from a LOT of shows (to load them onto my tablet), and the hour-long shows are almost always 40-45 in length when the commercials are edited out.  Doesn't matter the type of show, or the network it airs on.

Sure, there are exceptions, but the lengthening of commercials isn't new, nor is it unique to AMC/Walking Dead.

2013-04-05 11:20:39 AM
It just feels like the commercials are longer because there's so much inaction during the show.

Midseason AMC ad blitz: Big showdown between Rick and the Governor!!!!!

Episode: Rick and Governor sit at a table and chat for an entire episode
Episode: Slow deliberate dialog delivered while staring over the other's shoulder at a wall
Episode: Slow deliberate dialog delivered while staring over the other's shoulder at a wall
Episode: Slow deliberate dialog delivered while staring over the other's shoulder at a wall, oh and Merle dies
Final Episode: Slow deliberate dialog delivered while staring over the other's shoulder at a wall

There are some points in there where zombies appear but they are quickly handled.

Uh, this is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever read.  If you aren't watching the Super Bowl when it is on, you are not interested in Football.  Yes the Super Bowl is somewhat of a cultural event that has morphed into a clever commercial delivery system, but the football aspect has always been the same.  I don't even know how you can say the Super Bowl isn't about football.  What?  It is the farking Super Bowl.  Obviously you aren't a football fan, but I am and I could give two shiats about the commercials, that is when I get another beer and take a piss.

As far as commercials during sports, yeah it sucks, football is the only thing I watch live and hence is the only commercial exposure I have (except I guess for the morning news which I just leave on while eating breakfast).  I don't like it, but that is the way it is.  I still would rather watch a good live football game over almost anything else.

I'm honestly not being snarky, but why is it important to you to watch sports live? I mean, I understand that it's  really easy to have scores spoiled if you wait too long, but wouldn't it make sense to just get a ten minute buffer on the DVR so that you can skip over the commercials? Is there something intrinsic about it being live that I'm missing?

I really don't know anything about the comic books. But it seems pretty clear the producers are past due to hip people that if the want what's in the comic they will have to look elsewhere.

Right now the show is following a fairly generic and astonishingly predictable path. And failing in every way but making money for AMC.  They need to grow a set and make the show special (or at least more interesting). And I doubt the comic is the way to go to do that.

Depends on what you want when you say interesting, I mean to be fair this thing could be on HBO and we could film every single moment from the comic almost pane for pane and it would flop hard. Not because it wouldn't be hard hitting drama but because the uncomfortable parts would be thing people are just not ready to see on TV, cable or premium. I mean gang rapes, crushed babies, that sort of thing, cherished characters vanishing in an instant.

The show got hamstringed last season by having its expected budget cut, so it went through an almost total rewrite so that they could reduce the number of filming locations. I think this year was about trying to make up that lost arc, because really if you think about it, Season 2 and 3 could be combined for the most part.

Now because the show still has legs and numbers despite its budget numbers, it feels like the executives are purposely trying to string things along. Which is a damn shame because really in the comics there is still A TON of material left, arc wise its only up to around volume 8 and you got another 10 to go.

It would have been much better that the writers just literally careened through the comics, introduced original characters then branched of into their own world.

Like the Tell Tale game

It depends on the game honestly.  If I am watching my team (Niners) it has to be live.  I have so many football fan friends that we often txt msg each other snarky shiat while the game is happening.  So if you aren't live, you can't avoid the spoilers.  If I am watching just a random game, I'll DVR it and start watching it 30-40 minutes in.  So during football season I'll really only watch 1 out of the 3 or 4 games I watch in that week live.  Others have that same live mentality for all of the games, but I am just that way with my team.

Also I have to admit that when you care about a live event, there is something different about watching it live.  You just want to know what happens as it happens.  I can't really explain it in words other than that.
