"The Commission shall identify best practices and otherwise make recommendations to promote the efficient administration of elections in order to ensure that all eligible voters have the opportunity to cast their ballots without undue delay, and to improve the experience of voters facing other obstacles in casting their ballots, such as members of the military, overseas voters, voters with disabilities, and voters with limited English proficiency."

How dare the President create an advisory board that tries to make it easier for people to vote

2013-04-04 01:52:46 PM
Really, Butthurtmitter? Establishing a non-salaried advisory commission within the authority of the Federal Advisory Committee Act is somehow scary, a violation of the constitution, and a violation of seperation of powers? I guess his trip to Florida to play golf with Tiger constituted high crimes and misdemeanors. We'll find a way to impeach this uppity blah person somehow.

Oh NO!  A Commission!  Next you know they'll be issuing non-BINDING RECOMMENDATIONS!!!!!!111!!

The President can create advisory committees, substandardmitter.

Came to say this.

The GOP will say "Obama is circumventing Congress to make sure more people vote for the Democratic Party"

It would have been nice, since they will be there anyway, to find a way to keep people who shouldn't be voting from voting.

But that would be efficient and we all know the government doesn't do efficient.

iv) the efficient management of voter rolls and poll books;
viii) management of issuing and processing provisional ballots in the polling place on Election Day;
(ix) the issues presented by the administration of absentee ballot programs;

Seems like these provisions might help.

Right on cue, the obligatory naysayers show up to find something, anything wrong with this. So tell me, you two, what would be your response if Obama were to say that clean air and water is good for you? How about if he were to say that violent crime is bad and should be reduced?

Is there literally anything he could say that you wouldn't find some way to piss on?

(And no, snarky comments like "his resignation" don't count. Nice try. We all know you were going to go there otherwise.)

but you can't proactively take away a right without due process.

Okay that's a start, but next you can get rid of the electoral college and fire anyone in congress who's voted on a bill without understanding it.

Then we can worry about switching to a form of democracy where people are represented instead of places.

Also, "enemy" was defined as the entire planet.

The only possible problem I see is with the direct presidential appointment. Congress is supposed to confirm "public ministers" and "officers of the United States". This may be abrogated by the fact that the commission has only advisory power, but I'd have to read up on some SCOTUS precedent to be positive.

MrEricSir: Okay that's a start, but next you can get rid of the electoral college and fire anyone in congress who's voted on a bill without understanding it.

Then we can worry about switching to a form of democracy where people are represented instead of places.

This.

Any power not specifically allowed to congress is reserved to the states.
The constitution says nothing about accidents, making mistakes or 'oops, I didn't know.'
Thus being a dumbass is something that state legislatures do.
By the time you get to the federal level you should have your shiat together and know what the fark you're voting on.
Failure to do so should be greeted with summary execution to deter others.

FTFY.  That right there would have fixed Florida's 4-6 hour wait times.

/We had a 1.5 page ballot.   Took about 10 minutes to fill out, which combined with 8 booths meant that we moved at about 1 person every minute and a half.  At our very, very worst, we had an hour line when we opened, and once we worked that out (at about 10:00 or so), we had no line after that.

It's not that he's circumventing the constitution. It's just that the Executive Branch has the Constitutional authority to execute the law and he's actually acting to do that.

Enough of that and people will start asking what the Constitutional role of the Legislative Branch is. Right now they have people believing that all they're responsible for is opposing Obama. What if they find out that Congress is supposed to actually enact laws?

What's beautiful is that Obama ran against the Bush administration's power grab and he won. By winning the election he inherited all that power. All of these executive orders are necessary so that Barry doesn't have to show any real leadership in getting anything done.   Leading the country has cost our golfer in chief too many rounds at the links.  Just blame it on the republicans and yell "FORE!"

2013-04-05 12:29:58 AM
I am usually very critical of executive orders because they are usually an abuse of power.  This time, I don't think that's the case.  This looks like, "I'm creating an commission to look into the best way to handle something that is a congressionally authorized duty of this office."  No problem.  Now if it were, "by executive order, I've made it a criminal offense to criticize this office", that would be an entirely different situation.

Do tell. I didn't see any article. What article did I miss? I saw an innocuos executive order. I like his bolder moves.

From the NYT
They describe a paradoxical leader who shunned the legislative deal-making required to close the detention facility at Guantánamo Bay in Cuba, but approves lethal action without hand-wringing. While he was adamant about narrowing the fight and improving relations with the Muslim world, he has followed the metastasizing enemy into new and dangerous lands. When he applies his lawyering skills to counterterrorism, it is usually to enable, not constrain, his ferocious campaign against Al Qaeda - even when it comes to killing an American cleric in Yemen, a decision that Mr. Obama told colleagues was "an easy one."

NYT again
A few sharp-eyed observers inside and outside the government understood what the public did not. Without showing his hand, Mr. Obama had preserved three major policies - rendition, military commissions and indefinite detention - that have been targets of human rights groups since the 2001 terrorist attacks.

toddism: most people are idiots and/or grossly uninformed and should not be allowed to vote.

do you really want the guy or gal serving burgers at the braves game voting?  do you really want honey booboo's sperm donor or mom voting? the answer is no.

You should feel bad about yourself for that.

Hi, I'm Mr. Tiny Minority. I detest executive orders. By that, I mean all of them. Instead of sitting on my hands for eight years while a drydrunk established a police state with a stream of egregious orders, then shrieking with outrage at every executive order of a socialist blah man, even the fairly innocuous ones.

I agree with part of the argument above.  When I go to stores such as Walmart I see people of all colors and sizes and I do mean all sizes , wear pajamas in public.  They weigh three hundred pounds.  They have spent enough money on body art to feed a family of six for two months.  They pull out the bridge card to pay with their missing tooth grin.

Do I think that they are worthy of an equal vote?  My answer is Hell No!  They will vote for the person that will give them a spot in the free cupcake line and nothing more.  They will not pay attention to the really important issues that keep this country free and prosperous.  All that they care about is if the check is there at the beginning of the month.

Do I think that they should have the right to that equal vote taken away?  Do I think that there should be a tax to weed out the weak?  My answer is still Hell NO!  Neither I nor any other person or government entity have the right to do so.  There might be people that hold criteria pertinent to me as incapable of making an electoral decision.

Race card nonsense didn't take long.  Good job.

Because advocating a form of poll tax/eligibility test has no basis in race at all.

Not unless you think that one race is smarter than another.  I'm advocating a standard of intellect / knowledge.  You aren't suggesting that one race is smarter than the other, are you?

I'm suggesting that such a thing has inherently racist roots. We got rid of them because they are discriminatory. They still are. If they were such a bad idea that they needed to be farking outlawed, they are still that bad an idea. Someone, such as yourself, suggesting that such a 'test' would be a good idea is the kind of thinking that leads us back to the 'good ol days'. We don't need that kind of thinking in America. Go fark yourself.

So you're saying that blacks would perform more poorly on a test of basic knowledge than whites.  That's kinda racist of you.  Congrats!

Thanks for putting non-existent words in my mouth. Nothing in what I wrote says anything close to what you said. It is irrelevant what the results of such a test would be, the idea of such a test has racist roots and anyone who can't recognize or acknowledge that and admit that such a thing is a really terrible idea is either incredibly stupid or... lacking a better explanation, racist. Congrats on being one of those two things.

It has nothing to do with the past.  You keep bringing that in to it.  In the past it was racially motivated and it worked because we didn't give blacks access to schools or books.  That's not the case anymore, so I don't see how you're drawing a parallel.  You're bringing in an irrelevant issue.

If you can't recognize that a policy with racist roots is still inherently discriminatory... regardless of what it is that is being discriminated against... then you are beyond help. A lunatic can know American history and vote, but a person well versed in the issues of today that may not know the 'nuts and bolts' of our system of government can't?  Why is that a good idea? Someone who can pass the citizen test who think the government is run by lizard people can vote, but a hard working single mom who's a bit too busy trying to raise her children and get by to study civics can't?

It's good to know that you are advocating a distinctly anti-American policy. Congratulations.

It doesn't have racist roots.  Just because people once used tests to discriminate against those that they didn't allow to learn to read doesn't mean that in this day and age when that no longer occurs that a test is the same policy or based on the same thing.  That's completely asinine.  I hope that you are just being disingenuous and aren't actually that potato.

Also, if, as you say, a single mother is too busy to learn that there are three branches of government, she is also probably too busy to learn enough about the issues to make an informed decision in the voting booth.  Thank you for making my argument for me.

Glad that you think and informed and intelligent electorate is anti-American.  You are what's wrong with this country.

Thinking that a small group of people can come up with a 'test' that decides what it means for someone to qualify as 'informed and intelligent' is what is anti-American. You are, quite clearly, the problem. People can discuss issues at the water cooler or during lunch and become informed. I'm trying to remember the last time the line of succession of the presidency was discussed in such an environment. Knowing the structure of our government has literally ZERO to do with someone being part of an informed electorate. WTF does knowing three branches of government or how a bill becomes a law or how vetos work have a goddamn thing to do with someone who think marriage equality is a pretty important thing to support or who think that we spend too much on our military? You are a train wreck of an American. May God have mercy on your soul.

People applying for citizenship have to take a test.  Some of the questions might be silly, but they are still important.  Maybe we need to give this same test out for voter registration.  If you can't score a 70% on this then you have no business voting.  http://cltr.co.douglas.nv.us/Elections/100QuestionTest.htm

They should study up on how we do it in Denver... maybe it's the whole state, not sure.

About a month before the election I get my blue book in the mail explaining everything up for vote as well as pros and cons given by both sides and the impact it will have on the economy. I read it at my leisure. About a week before early voting begins I get my ballot in the mail. I fill it out at my leisure. Early voting begins and I drop it off at one of the many voting stations that are on my way to work. Heck, I don;t even have to get out of the car! It's freakin great.

Serioiusly, I think you can make a huge difference in how America views conservatism.  I don't want to merely subscribe to your newsletter, I want to fund it, and make sure that you become the face of modern conservatism, because with you as a spokesman, it will die a quick but painless death.

Make sure to talk about rape as much as possible.  It's a winning strategy.  Trust me.

Black man in the White House, everybody! Better run!

Race card nonsense didn't take long.  Good job.

Because advocating a form of poll tax/eligibility test has no basis in race at all.

Especially in any sort of historical context.

Because we should always live in the past.

I believe that all races have had access to books for quite awhile now.

says the guy who wants to implement a policy from the past. *rolls eyes*

Men and women whose skidmarks had more value than you were persecuted, beaten, raped, and killed in their quest to stop literal fascists like you from systematically disenfranchising millions of Americans through "literacy tests." Education in this country is still segregated, educational opportunities are not equal, and literacy tests have always, wherever they have been introduced, been deliberately crafted to keep the "undesirables" from voting.

May your legacy last not a single generation. May all your works die with you, may your name be forgotten, and may your seed lay cold in the furrow.

Before voting against the [1965 voting rights] bill, Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who had switched his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican in September 1964, eulogized the Senate as the "final resting place of the Constitution and the rule of law, for it is here that they will have been buried with shovels of emotion under piles of expediency, in the year of our Lord, 1965."

I'd rather have the platform of "stupid" people voting than fascists like you arbitrarily deciding who should and should not vote.

The irony of it all is that based on your posts here and elsewhere, you yourself would almost certainly be disenfranchised by the policy you are proposing.
