If anyone needs to vacate the chair, it's Letterman.  He hasn't been relevant for decades.

Speak for yourself, he's been my favourite since I was a kid. Although Fallon is funny too I find (OMGZ FALLON IS THE WORST CANCER IN HISTORY, right?)
And a piece of his interview just went "viral" last week or so (the Selena Gomez thing), so yes, he still is relevant technically.

/Canadian, so can't see the list
//could a kind soul post it?

Top Ten Things We Will Miss About Jay LenoThursday, April 4, 2013
10.
Whenever he used a "Headline" I sent in, I got a "Tonight Show" T-shirt
9. Now I'm the only guy in late night television who's not a Jimmy
8. He looks damn good in denim
7. Driving one of his antique fire trucks
6. Playful spats with Gelman
5. If you broke down on the freeway, Jay was always there to help with a camera crew
4. Can't remember the name of the bit, but it's the one where Jay is walking
3. He's mom's favorite talk show host
2. I won't be able to do this anymore (Dave does Leno impression)
1. Watching him interview big stars who won't do this show

Thanks guys.

I love his self-deprecating stuff, always good for a chuckle.

I miss when he used to sub in for Carson because that meant Carson was still on the air and Carson was awesome.

dave apparently actually likes and respects jay, despite all the stuff in their past

while i rarely watch the late night talk shows (cartoons usually win), dave is still my favorite, conan a close 2nd. i hardly ever watch the jimmies, but they both get good guests, especially music guests. and fallon's stuff like dressing as chickens and clucking a cover song, or his neil young impressions, are really good

I stopped watching shortly after he bombed at the Oscars and became a humorless crank. I'm sure he eventually got his mojo back, but I've moved on.

I wish Craig Ferguson would do an episode as Bing Hitler. Just for old time's sake.

I like Letterman. I think they've been happy doing the show the way they have for a long time now. Do I miss the guy under the stairs and what's in my stage manager's refrigerator? Sure.

I think the day the comedy shrank for Dave was the night he knocked at someone's door and the guy was just a wee bit paranoid. (I'm pretty sure he was holding a gun in his hand behind his front wall.) He told Letterman to get off his lawn immediately, in a very threatening way. Letterman kind of melted there and backed away and left.

The fatwa didn't help either...

I agree... To me, he's like a bitter old man...  He doesn't appear like he enjoys his job.  I actually find him a bit scary.   I wouldn't even want to be in the same room as him, let alone attempt to be amused by him.

Letterman was hilarious in the "Monkey Cam," harassing Bryant Gumbel and dropping shiat off the rooftop days.   He still has moments, but things like the Top 10 List just seem old and outdated given the fresh stuff that Fallon and Kimmel produce.

Can't blame him for the Oscars for the Oscars (as a spectacle) sucks monkey balls.

I think the 15 second commercial I had to watch was more interesting and amusing.

There was a great BS Report on Grantland today over this. Pretty much nails the current state of late night.
