Am I the only dude around who's thought about donating sperm but just thinks it'd be a little too strange to have kids that you don't know about?

I mean, I have this scenario in my head where I'm at some public place, I turn around, and there's this kid (maybe 4 or 5 years old) just staring up at me, and he looks just like me. Then the mother pulls the kid away.

Not, it's not just you.  Especially now that I have a kid.  To imagine that I would have more kids out there somewhere, possibly not being taken care of?

There was an article a while back about a guy who donated a ton of sperm in college.  It was back when things were pretty new and he was a good looking ivy league guy or something so he wound up fathering a bunch of kids through the program.  He talked about how it was tough for his GF's/spouse knowing that random kids might pop up and say hi.  Plus he was concerned that his offspring might wind up getting to gether and unknowingly have incest babies.

Actually, that article implies that they would be citizens if she could only prove one of the biological parents were American. (The issue there is that the birth mother is not the biological mother; both the egg and the sperm were donated anonymously.) So, maybe not easy, but definitely not impossible. Seems like there would be a market for verifiably American sperm/eggs.

As an american male that donates sperm to a chinese female on a regular basis, I'm getting a kick out of this thread

That's the other way around.  It's saying that the children are not American citizens if both the boilogical parents are not citizens, even if the person giving birth to them is.

Which is also nuts, but it's a whole different kind of nuts.

I thought about doing that as well a number of years ago. The only reason I didn't actually go through it with is because you can't jerk off or have sex during your donation period, which is twice a week for a month. If they catch you cheating (by checking your sperm count), they'd void your contract and pay you nothing.

Not the exact same scenario as a sperm donor, but enough to show how ill-equipped the law is when it comes to in vitro.

Nevermind, you were right; I just read it wrong. I was thinking our phrasings were different in the one parent is, one parent isn't case. But it's one of them De Morgan's Law things (\A & \B) == \(A | B) and all that.
