Enjoy your $30.00 Big Macs.

I'm chowing down on a Bacon Egg N' Cheese Biscuit right now, so I'm getting a kick out of this news.

A person used to be able to support a family on a "low wage" job. Nowadays, that's impossible. One more thing that's wrong with the Jerb-Creator's Paradise.

Wow.  50 fast food places in New York will be closed.  I wonder if New Jersey will be able to handle the millions of starving New Yorkers fleeing across the river, voraciously consuming anything in their path like a horde of locusts.

You mean back when minorities got aced out of most decent jobs, Europe and Japan were smoking heaps of rubble and China and India were a Maoist hellhole and a semi-medieval society, respectively? Yes, by all means let's go back to 1954. At least watching Willie Mays would be a kick.

A family? These days a person can't even support themselves on one of these jobs without government assistance.

It's been the subject of this week's Doonesbury storyline; can't be THAT secret.

"We take a crunchy, all-beef taco, smother it in nacho cheese, lettuce, tomato and our special southwestern sauce. Then we wrap it in a soft, flour tortilla with a layer of refried beans in-between.  Then we wrap that in a savory corn tortilla with a middle layer of Monterey Jack cheese. Then we take a deep-fried gordita shell, smear on a little of our special "guacamolito" sauce and wrap that around the outside.  We bake it in a corn husk filled with pico de gallo, then then wrap that in an authentic Parisian crepe, filled with egg, gruyere, merguez sausage and Portobello mushroom. we take the whole thing and wrap that in a Chicago style deep dish meat lovers pizza!  Finally we roll it up in a blueberry pancake, dip it in batter and deep-fry it until it's golden brown. Then we serve it in all commemorative tote bag filled with spicy vegetarian chili. It's 15 great tastes all rolled into one."

22 years old, seven years in the industry, still making minimum wage.... I know things are tough all over, but damn.

2013-04-04 11:01:16 AM
And all the unemployed people immediately stepped in to fill their menial, minimum wage positions. If you have no skills, you have no negotiating leverage.

Why should they expect to? Why is it that anyone who works 10 hours a week should expect to be able to live off that forever?

Wages doubled better raise the price of our product 6 times to ensure no one will buy them.

This will cause as much disruption to those restaurants as a three year old having a tantrum over getting the wrong happy meal toy.

Considering they're asking for a doubling of wages, at best you're getting a $7 Big Mac, but that assumes wages are are 100% of price.

Hint: it's not.

But the price will go up IF they keep their jobs.  But you should relax.  I heard on Fox News that because of Obama's onerous government regulations and tax-and-spend ways, the job market is so tight that McDonald's requires bachelors degrees now so they probably can just fire all of these employees and get new ones in a day.

2013-04-04 11:05:03 AM
#1 Good for them.
#2 Prepare to be fired, you are replaceable.....which is how corporate America wants you.

You can make $15/hr working at a McDonalds without a union.

Of course, you have to live in Williston ND...

2013-04-04 11:05:51 AM
If you've been working at a job for 7 years, and you're still making minimum wage maybe there's an issue besides the pay scale.  Hell, even at McDonalds you can get promoted if you're halfway worth a damn.

You know there are people that work full time 40 hour a week minimum wage jobs don't you? They can't support themselves in most cities on what they make.

Hey McDickwads. You have no farking skills other than to speak in to a microphone and play on a farking keyboard and ask "do you want fries with that?". Your unskilled unmotivated ass ain't worth $15.00 an hour. Now GBTW or GTFO.

Do the big chains realize that they can virtually eliminate their small-business competition by allowing minimum wage to rise?  How long can Paulie's Pizza and Subs stay open paying $15/hour?

Because people who work at fast food restos have so much time, energy and savings to just strike with little to no public support to make an obscure political point. They'll totally break the fast food industry.  No one in this job climate will rush to fill those jobs.

It's like the Walmart experience: middle class 16 to 25 year olds who plan on completing several university level degrees start a strike for purely political reasons.  And 60 year old greeters who have an increadibly hard time getting any other work suffer.

I'm not saying don't strike.  I'm not saying it's a fair situation.  But, I strongly believe that the welfare of people is more important than making an abstract political statement.

Not at McDonalds they don't. Corporate doesn't allow any employee to accumulate that many hours

I do have sympathy for fast food workers & IANALaborLawyer, but before you guys go marching out the door singing "Solidarity Forever," you might want to review the definition of an "At-Will" employee.

This.

But, well, I can understand why unskilled striaght white American males would want to go back to that time.  They only get to play on easy mode now, where they used to play on God mode.

Starting wage at White Castle on Kentucky Ave in Indianapolis, IN is $13.50 hour.  They also pay a shift differential.

/My cousin started there last week.  He is 16 and it is his first job and it is evenings and weekends.

If you have enough support to organize a strike, you have enough support to organize a union.  All it takes is a single secret ballot and ta-da, union.

Lost Thought 00: Why is it that anyone who works 10 hours a week should expect to be able to live off that forever?

An average worker needs to work a mere 11 hours per week to produce as much as one working 40 hours per week in 1950.

$15/hour for fast food work? Fark that. I make $10.50/hour to operate injection molding machines...and thats a whole lot more complex than anything in fast food. Sorry, but if your a "career" fast food person, and you cant make it to management where they pay well, then perhaps minimum wage is your lifetime top out.

/people need to stop thinking they should be able to afford a Bentley on rims from every job.

2013-04-04 11:12:06 AM
If it paid $15 an hour, people who already have jobs would also consider another part time job there for the extra income. Now it would be the Already Employed who took there jerbs.

2013-04-04 11:12:12 AM
Why not pay fast food workers as much as sanitation workers? They handle hazardous garbage, after all.

2013-04-04 11:12:38 AM
Yeahhhh; I had a co-worker suggest a walkout. I had to explain that since we don't have a union and live in a right-to-work state we could all be summarily fired.
