Jay, who helped push Johnny out while he was on top of his game and king of the late night shows, is now being pushed out, even though he's the king of late night shows in terms of ratings.  Oh so very Karmic.

I completely disagree on that one bolded point.  Johnny refined the late night talk show format to what it is today and is a legend among legends, but it was long past time for him to go.  Everything we currently acuse Jay of was just as bad in Johnny's last few years.  Possibly even worse when you consider Ed and Doc were still doing the same stuff.  Repetitive, boring, catered to sponsors and old folks.

I do agree on the poetic justice of the whole situation, though.

In my mind, back when Johnny was out, Leno moved in and Letterman moved over to CBS, the best thing to happen was Conan getting Late Night.  I'd never heard of the guy, and as raw as he was at the beginning, he injected new life into the format - that silly Conan humor.  People seem to be souring on it now, but back then it was the freshest air you could find on weeknight television.

side note/thread jack- doc severinen is still alive and playing his trumpet. me, the wife and kids (and mother in law) went to naples florida for spring break. (first since father in law died...that is why mother in law was there). there was a jazz concert going on and it was playing with the naples jazz orchetstra. he was also given a key to the city. at the age or 80 something...he was about average in age for the concert goers.

his political jokes fit right in too...

it was roped off and the place was packed (i won't go into the parking and driving in downtown naples...it was very floridaesque). 10 bucks a head inside the ropes. there were public sidewalks and if you stopped to listen...someone with event badges came over to bother you for 10 bucks per person in your party for listening.
