their $46,000 tax refund from 2011

Uh....that's a tax refund that's more than a lot of people earn in a single year. She's either full of shiat or she is horrible at managing her money and quite probably both.

Game of Thrones will not last forever and she may never get a job after it. She probably will get other jobs, but as an actress it's certainly not guaranteed. WTF is wrong with these people?

I do believe they live on a different planet than most regular people.

An account of some sort?

Like....a house she can't afford if she doesn't keep pulling in a salary that somehow gets a $46,000 tax refund. Cars she can't afford. Other luxuries she can't afford. COCAINE

Yeah, I have very little sympathy for these broke-assed celebrities who probably get more money in a single year than most people will earn in a decade and in some cases even several lifetimes.

I don't know what she makes, but the tax refund in and of itself says it must be a farking shiat-ton of money.

It confounds me to no end.

She runs this gig for a few years.  Have a good negotiator on your side and invest smart.

After the series is done you spend your weekends hitting the 'cons and raking in cash signing DVD boxes and various nerds swords.

There you have it....for the rest of your life you get to live a pretty modest lifestyle for almost no real actual work.

This sort of thing is a gift.  Don't fark it up.

Yep, a messy, bitter divorce is the single stupidest thing 2 people can do.  My brother is in one right now and I can't tell him that his lawyer will agree to ANYTHING because he's getting paid to try it.  They are getting to the point where combined they will owe more in legal fees than the liquid value of the assets they are fighting over.

Keep in mind these (actors/actresses) are people who make a living by playing pretend.  I imagine that if you are really good at pretending, you would might not have the best grip or ability to stay in reality.

Think about what it means to get the "part" in a show.   You were called into audition based on your looks/headshot/profile pictures (so you look the part).  But someone else gets the gig.  You are basically being told that someone else was better at pretending to be someone else.  Tell an 8 year old who is pretending to be a princess that she is doing it wrong and imagine the temper-tantrum when you take away the tiara and give it to another 8 year old.  Now picture the same scenario with 20-30 somethings who need to pay rent.  I would think it may cause some in the acting profession to be a little off in personality/life choices...aka crazy.

Yep. I have a friend who's going through a messy divorce. Except he's not some rich actor; he's just a normal working dude. From the outside looking in it is obvious that the lawyers are doing little except sucking the corpse of the marriage dry of every last penny, and doing absolutely nothing to actually resolve the thing. It won't end until both are destitute, and there's nothing left worth fighting over. It would all be so tragic-comical, if it wasn't for the kids....

This. Who forced you to overpay your taxes by $46,000?

Better to overpay and get a refund, then to underpay and have to pay a tax penalty which could be thousands more at their income levels.  Especially when you're legally separated and its not clear if you'll be able to agree on filing taxes jointly (lowest tax rate) or as married filing separately (highest tax rate), and which of you would get to claim the child as a deduction in that case.

And considering a shiat ton of actors and musicians seem to get in to trouble for not paying enough taxes, I'm guessing they paid in massively and the max rate and are then having accountants figure out their deductions properly later. Better safe than sorry kind of approach.

Seen it happen, a lot actually.  One of the best divorce lawyers I knew used to give his client's a speech about how the divorce process wasn't therapy and wouldn't give them any emtional satisfaction, so they could be rational let him handle it like a business partnership dissolution, and have enough left over to send thier kids to college, or fight tooth an nail to the bitter end and pay him enough to send HIS kds to college.   I once saw a divorce/custody battle that started with the couple in a million+ dollar house, fighting over who got to take the kid to her ballet recitial and horseback riding lessons, and end with mom on public assistance in a Sec 8 apartment and dad with a studio efficency in a bad part of town.   The horse was presumably sold for glue and dogfood at some point

Let's not forget that she's either getting divorced or just finished one up (I can't recall). That's a pretty awesome way to empty one's bank accounts without necessarily being a boob (though I'm assuming there might be boobishness from the other party in the divorce).

Sounds more like an argument that marriage is the stupidest thing two people can do, with divorce being a close second.

I did not know that, but isn't she from England and isn't health care free there?

Sorry, I don't keep tabs on the personal lives of celebrities. A cursory glance at wikipedia says she has 1 child, but I didn't notice any medical conditions mentioned there and a similarly cursory look at imdb shows she's been working for over 20 years as an actress. How the hell can she be broke?

It was probably unfair of me to throw out cocaine as a possible explanation although I wouldn't rule it out, but seriously how the hell is she broke? $46,000 tax refund pretty much says it all. You don't get that kind of refund unless you earn a lot more than that

2013-04-05 01:10:05 AM

Happy Hours: I did not know that

Sorry, my misread at another article -- it was her pregnancy that made her uninsurable, due to it being considered a pre-existing condition, and also leaving her unable to work. Medical care ain't cheap, even relatively "routine" prenatal/neonatal.

I suspect she was functionally stuck in the US for a bit in hopes of a job; not sure on the details. (I don't pay much attention to the entertainment world, either.)

Happy Hours: It was probably unfair of me to throw out cocaine as a possible explanation although I wouldn't rule it out, but seriously how the hell is she broke?

I can't rule it out either; and yeah, likely takes some work... particularly with the income a $46k refund suggests. Even still, it's also not clear whether she or hubby is the spendthrift. Her request for the refund going to a dual-signature checking account suggests him.

I read an interesting article some time ago about a" regular" guy who dated a supermodel for several months. It was less him bragging about awesome sexxoring with a supermodel , and more about how bewildering she was by the mundane facets of life that you or I take for granted, such as balancing a checkbook.

Part of the problem is the economic nature of the business. Actors are not employees, they don't draw regular paychecks. When the are working on a project, they get paid in lump sums. When they aren't working on a project, they are essentially unemployed.

Oh sure, you or I could easily take a huge lump sum of money and figure out how to budget that out until our next presumable project, but that's because we have years of experience in managing out expenses relative to our income. Supermodels and actors often don't. Many hire personal accountants, but many do not.

Many actors use their star status to prolong and strength their careers, and to maintain their star status, they are expected to behave and appear like stars. That means flying around to attend lots of PR events, and wearing designer clothes, and going on lavish vacations, and buying expensive property (which adds more monthly overhead). To say nothing of the "normal" stuff, like raising kids, or going through messy divorces.

Its not surprising that this person, despite being a well-respected actor on one of the hottest shows around, is having a cash-flow problem.

2013-04-06 05:23:09 AM
So, messy divorce, and all her usual sources of money are completely locked down.  Yeah, I can't blame her for that.
