their $46,000 tax refund from 2011

Uh....that's a tax refund that's more than a lot of people earn in a single year. She's either full of shiat or she is horrible at managing her money and quite probably both.

Game of Thrones will not last forever and she may never get a job after it. She probably will get other jobs, but as an actress it's certainly not guaranteed. WTF is wrong with these people?

I do believe they live on a different planet than most regular people.

An account of some sort?

Like....a house she can't afford if she doesn't keep pulling in a salary that somehow gets a $46,000 tax refund. Cars she can't afford. Other luxuries she can't afford. COCAINE

Yeah, I have very little sympathy for these broke-assed celebrities who probably get more money in a single year than most people will earn in a decade and in some cases even several lifetimes.

I don't know what she makes, but the tax refund in and of itself says it must be a farking shiat-ton of money.

2013-04-04 08:09:04 AM
It confounds me to no end.

She runs this gig for a few years.  Have a good negotiator on your side and invest smart.

After the series is done you spend your weekends hitting the 'cons and raking in cash signing DVD boxes and various nerds swords.

There you have it....for the rest of your life you get to live a pretty modest lifestyle for almost no real actual work.

This sort of thing is a gift.  Don't fark it up.

A messy, bitter divorce can suck up money like a black hole. It's entirely possible she and the ex have bankrupted each other.

I could loan her $6000.  She can pay it back in cash or take it out in trade.

It's sad to see her hovering around the craft service table on the GoT set, stuffing food into her pockets.

I can only speculate when she's pulling down per episode, but I doubt that its peanuts.

I'll give her a few grand for a few hours of her time, if you know what I mean.

Were it any other judge, she might have hoped for a private audience, but with Judge Stannis she'd have a better chance of seducing his horse.

Yep, a messy, bitter divorce is the single stupidest thing 2 people can do.  My brother is in one right now and I can't tell him that his lawyer will agree to ANYTHING because he's getting paid to try it.  They are getting to the point where combined they will owe more in legal fees than the liquid value of the assets they are fighting over.

Keep in mind these (actors/actresses) are people who make a living by playing pretend.  I imagine that if you are really good at pretending, you would might not have the best grip or ability to stay in reality.

Think about what it means to get the "part" in a show.   You were called into audition based on your looks/headshot/profile pictures (so you look the part).  But someone else gets the gig.  You are basically being told that someone else was better at pretending to be someone else.  Tell an 8 year old who is pretending to be a princess that she is doing it wrong and imagine the temper-tantrum when you take away the tiara and give it to another 8 year old.  Now picture the same scenario with 20-30 somethings who need to pay rent.  I would think it may cause some in the acting profession to be a little off in personality/life choices...aka crazy.

FTFA it sounds like they have locked up all the assets that could be considered "community property" and she is waiting to get a paycheck. It sounds more like a cash flow issue than an issue of not actually being worth anything.

I've got a way she can earn a quick $1000.  Hint:  It's going to involve her wearing the costume and playing a game of Cersei and Jaime.

She's in the Mortal Instruments' series, so hopefully she arranged for some sort of percentage of the cut in addition to a base salary.  Either way, that'll be three movies worth of supportive roles in a tweener series.

Messy divorces suck up money like a black hole.

That said, I'm thinking that a change in her standard of living would have been a good idea when the divorce started.  Money comes in, money goes out, and you need to keep track of that kind of thing.

cefm: Messy divorces suck up money like a black hole.

Yep. I have a friend who's going through a messy divorce. Except he's not some rich actor; he's just a normal working dude. From the outside looking in it is obvious that the lawyers are doing little except sucking the corpse of the marriage dry of every last penny, and doing absolutely nothing to actually resolve the thing. It won't end until both are destitute, and there's nothing left worth fighting over. It would all be so tragic-comical, if it wasn't for the kids....

Better to overpay and get a refund, then to underpay and have to pay a tax penalty which could be thousands more at their income levels.  Especially when you're legally separated and its not clear if you'll be able to agree on filing taxes jointly (lowest tax rate) or as married filing separately (highest tax rate), and which of you would get to claim the child as a deduction in that case.

And considering a shiat ton of actors and musicians seem to get in to trouble for not paying enough taxes, I'm guessing they paid in massively and the max rate and are then having accountants figure out their deductions properly later. Better safe than sorry kind of approach.

lena headley has been a professional actor since 1992 and has dozens of acting credits including one of the leads in that terminator thing that lasted a couple of years. I would imagine she had earned in the low millions before ever hearing of game of thrones. If she's broke she has well earned it.

Seen it happen, a lot actually.  One of the best divorce lawyers I knew used to give his client's a speech about how the divorce process wasn't therapy and wouldn't give them any emtional satisfaction, so they could be rational let him handle it like a business partnership dissolution, and have enough left over to send thier kids to college, or fight tooth an nail to the bitter end and pay him enough to send HIS kds to college.   I once saw a divorce/custody battle that started with the couple in a million+ dollar house, fighting over who got to take the kid to her ballet recitial and horseback riding lessons, and end with mom on public assistance in a Sec 8 apartment and dad with a studio efficency in a bad part of town.   The horse was presumably sold for glue and dogfood at some point
