i think what they wanted was somebody to hit with a tennis racket. if they saw her today they'd probably hit her with tennis rackets, but she'd have no cushion.

Good for her. And while the insecure fat people in here might not grasp it, being healthier and more attractive is actually a good thing, and helps your self confidence to boot. Being fat is not healthy- and attractiveness is not just some social construct. We're attracted to people who are healthy and genetically different enough from us to not cause problems (incidentally, that's why the BO of some prospective mates smells much better to you than others- it's one of the mechanisms your body has evolved to sniff out people in your small little tribal village who are too closely related to be a good match). Fat is not something we associate with healthy, and it turns out that evolution wasn't stupid on that front.

WillofJ2: , I have trouble thinking that loss occurred naturally with no supplements

It's not that hard to believe. Despite what the ads tell you to think, it's not magic: Eat a reasonable, balanced diet. If she was eating a pack or two of cookies a day, just not doing that is going to have a major impact.

I have a friend just like that. She seems to have this narrative that she keeps telling herself; that she's fat and no one will ever love her. No matter what people tell or how they act towards her she only accepts things that validate this world view and completely disregards anything that would conflict with it.

I had bariatric surgery and lost over 200 pounds. I love when I get flirted with or hit on by a woman who obviously wouldnt have even looked at me when I was heavier. Its fun to not give them the time of day and treat them just like they would have treated me. Its even more fun when they have what they consider a less attractive wing woman and I can hit on her

I've lost 50 lbs (almost 54, actually) so far since i started on New Year's Day this year and I'm relishing the comments. I'm not keeping it secret, either - once a month I put up comparison shots on my Facebook wall. The positive comments are very motivating. I felt I needed to let go of a sense of embarrassment about my body and start feeling pride in what I'm accomplishing.

I had that happen with a haircut once. Nice people were like "Hey. New hair. Looks cute." Several others,  including a few older male professors were all "Omgomg You look so-o-o-o much better now! I can't believe it! So trim and pretty! ... I didn't know you were good-looking! ... You look so smart now, do you feel more intelligent? Ha ha! ... etc.etc." There's a line between compliments and just, I don't know, awkwardness. Weight is usually a sensitive topic, so I can see how a person might not appreciate the delivery of some people's praise.

Now why is it ok to comment that they guy who shaved his beard looks better but not the guy who lost weight or the woman who finally sorted her hair out?

What do you want? people telling you you look bad every day? ("hey fattie, you look terrible")

What do you want? people to not tell you you look better now? ("You don`t look any better now")

What do you want? people to find you more attractive if you are fat? (dream on)

What do you want? people to never ever comment on your physical state positively or negatively? ("you look amazingly average today")

Get a grip. If people saying nice things to you is a problem then the people saying nice things is the LEAST of your problems...
You know you were fat, stop pretending nobody else knew either.

Diet and Xenical. I started at 394, so I have quite a high basal metabolic rate. Basically I'm eating enough to support a 180 lb person and letting nature take its course. I'm avoiding sugar and fat and maintaining portion control. And I'm not suffering the side effects with the drug that I had the first time I tried it because my diet is quite low in fat. I've learnt to tolerate and in some cases enjoy a wider range of fruits and vegetables, and this is the result so far

Cool. Best of luck to you! Question though, how do you know how much food is required to support a 180 lb person? I mean, I'm sure you could just crunch the numbers on how many calories are needed to keep you alive, but doesn't activity level play a pretty significant role? I would imagine that a 180 lb marathon runner would need substantially different nutritional input than a 180 lb couch potato.

Really it's a guesstimate. The information panels on food are quite detailed here in New Zealand and they have recommended daily intakes on them, so I weigh my servings of food on kitchen scales or have the recommended number of slices. I always pack my lunch for work and I cook my evening meals. It seems to be working, but there are all sorts of factors from gender to activity level that play into it.

Although sedentary, I've never been iimmobile, so I guess there's some muscle mass to help carry that extra weight helping my metabolism. The pace of weight loss will slow down as my BMR declines, so I'll look into an exercise programme then.
