I have one of those WW2 rifles that uses clips.

They're reusable. Which I think puts you in the same boat as DeGette.

I'm not really sure what to think of this. Her statement must have been based one something, even if that something was wrong. Maybe there are some clips that cannot be reused and I can forgive her confusing magazines with clips. We see people making that mistake here on fark regularly. Yet, every clip I've ever dealt with was reusable. In basic training I was one of the guys tasked with reloading clips one day. Of course, I only have limited experience with WWII era rifles and I can't remember ever using a clip, we just loaded the magazines by hand.

There's a big difference between trying to prove you weren't wrong and trying to prove you know what you're talking about.
It's bad when someone says you're wrong, it's worse when they say "this isn't right, it's not even wrong."

The En Bloc Clips from the M1 Garand aren't reusable?

Or is she talking about the Kar 98/Mauser 98 Stripper Clips?

Either way, she's incorrect.

Seriously. I think a a quip about it and maybe a chuckle would have gone a long way. I think we have all said something that came out totally confused sounding. I also don't expect them to know everything about guns or ammo but some basic homework is always appreciated. Or else you lose the message by looking incompetent. Like those silly Bloomberg ads. They may play well to the base but the the people you are trying to convert it just hurts the cause. I swear sometimes half of the problems in this country would be solved if people would try to listen and understand each side.

No one but gun nuts give a shiat if you use the term 'assault rifle' loosely or if you don't know the difference between a Smith & Wesson RG45-F revolver and a RG45-G, but c'mon, at least have a basic grasp of what you're trying to regulate.  Or if you don't, at least have the sense to sit at the back of the room and keep your mouth shut.

She described "magazines" as something that couldn't be refilled. Now she's saying she was talking about "clips" from World War II era guns? Umm, those could be refilled, too. The words magazine and clip have become interchangeable as weapons technology has advanced for the last 70 years and both are refillable. She is literally too arrogant and stupid to be holding public office if she thought this statement helps her in any way. Hopefully the republicans can run a non-Akin next time and kick her out of office.

Is this the one who told an elderly person at a hearing on gun control that they would be dead anyway.

She said the same thing to a rape victim that a gun wouldn't have helped her, or was that a different CO pro gun control idiot....

I wish stuff like this would get pointed out more in other topics besides guns.

Time and time again we have people trying to legislate things that they have no idea about, and rarely do they get called out on it.

DeGette's spokeswoman Juliet Johnson issued a statement Wednesday, saying the congresswoman mispoke.

Wait, what?

She screwed up and then sent a flunkey out to try and handle it?

She's a sponsor in 2 Congresses on this legislation. Sending the help out help doesn't really help and it certainly doesn't look good.

You own your own words, it is said.

In this case her own words pwned her.

The fact that her PR flack screwed up again when trying to smooth things over is funneh and all but this is still a big fark up.

Protip to Rep Diane DeGette: Time to put on yer big girl pants and try again. This time just you.

This is what I'm confused about. When people, politicians or others, say something that is completely absurd I can almost always figure out what they think they're talking about and where it came from. But, she has to have handlers, proof readers, fact checkers, etc.... So where, in the name of the FSM, did she come up with this crap?

I actually encourage everyone I know to own guns.  Not because they need them.  Because "if you can't beat 'em join 'em" actually works.

If liberals want a seat at the discussion on guns they're going to need to join the gun culture.  And if enough sane people join we'll be able to finally shift the discussion away from the loud crazy fringe element.

Fair. But they are obviously behind the current gun control push. It shouldn't be too much to ask that the sponsors of their bills actually know what the fark they are talking about.

Too bad there's no gun control lobby to hand out sheets of talking points to make politicians semi-knowledgeable.

(Seriously, why do only evil causes have effective lobbyists?)

Giltric: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2CB5EipZkw It was Democrat Evie Hedak who told the rape victim that she would have been raped anyway if she had carried her firearm.

Slightly cruel, perhaps.  But how is the substance of that statement controversial?  Her chances of fighting off the attacker might've gone up 10% if she was armed, but her chances of turning a rape into a rape+homicide went up 500%.  Hell, the rapist might've even gotten away with it on self-defense grounds.

And so do many of us liberals. We understand guns, we are trained to use guns, we own guns, we enjoy using guns, and we support gun rights. We also believe that there are things worth discussing that might help to decrease or at least mitigate gun violence in our country that do not violate the 2nd amendment.

The NRA supports background checks (pretty much always has) but is against the proposed implementation for a variety of reasons, primarily that it would be a backdoor to a central registry.
