WTF are people thinking down there?  What about the Latino and Asian kids, which prom do they get to go to?

I'm guessing the Chinese kids get to go to WhitePromTM, and the Indian kids get to go to BlackPromTM(much to the outrage of their parents).  And of course the Mexican kids won't be attending, they're working that night.

If it was 1955 this would make sense that kids might be fighting to have a prom together but it is 2013.  My brain can't even comprehend the idea of a "white only" event involving school kids.  I don't care where the money comes from to pay for it. It teaches kids to treat people of different races differently and more specifically that white folks are more important and exclusive than other races.  I am just shocked that shiat like this happens.

Yes, sir, the South is gonna change. Everything's gonna be put on electricity and run on a paying basis. Out with the old spiritual mumbo jumbo, the superstitions, and the backward ways. That's because with every generation the South is seeing more transplants from areas of the country that aren't complete farking backwaters.  I grew up in Savannah - I went back a few years ago after a long time away, and I was shocked by how completely backward it was.  Macon is even worse.

You have no idea how thankful I am for modern modes of transportation and the resulting shifts in numbers of people who leave their hometowns.

And if it was an official school event you would win your case. But, if it was a "private prom" (a private party hosted by a bunch of white parents for their children) then you would not have no case and would be schitt out of luck.

Have any of you actually been to Georgia? It's not the black kids wanting to go to the white prom and not being able to. It's the white kids not wanting to go to the regular prom which is most likely 90% black.

That was the case just last year as a biracial student was turned away by police.

It's been that way for as long as anyone can remember, and it doesn't stop at prom - homecoming is also segregated.

While still having two separate dances, the school decided to elect only one pair for king and queen for the first time this school year, and one of the integrated prom organizing students, Wallace, won.

"I felt like there had to be a change because for me to be a black person and the king to be a white person, I felt like, you know why can't we come together," Wallace asked.

But nothing changed. Wallace wasn't invited to the white homecoming. In fact, the king and queen took separate pictures for the school yearbook.

That's some deep in the bone cock-baggery.  Even separate pictures for the homecoming King and Queen.  Just WTF.  It even appears that the "BlackProm" allows white kids if they want to come, but it's the WhiteProm that's limited.

The parents bankrolling the race-based proms need a time-out and a spanking.  And possibly a deep Madingo dicking.

Sadly, the "prom" in question isn't an official school event, or paid for with public funds.   Ergo,  it's a private party,  and they can choose to allow anyone they want to attend or not attend to their hearts content....and yes, that makes people trying to gatecrash "Trespassers" who can have the police called on them.

And they should get their asses kicked for it.  On TV.

She also mentioned getting no school financial support for her integrated party (again not a prom, but a private party) ... does that mean the other two parties get financial support from the school?

The school should hold ONE prom and if you are not there then you do not get into the year book photos of the school prom. If you are voted King or Queen and do not attend the school's prom then the second place person gets to take the throne.

Seems easy.

Let racists be racists in private if they really want. If nothing else it gives us someone to laugh about.

In the south, it's automatically racism at play. However, it's never at play in the far NE (which is whiter that Flour), and segregation has never had to be incorporated because of the overwhelming white wealth.

They've got a university, two community theaters, two gay bars, a reform synagogue and a Unitarian Universalist church.

I web to school in very racist southeast Texas (near, but not in, Vidor, to give you an idea).

My school always had two proms, at least as recently as 1998. The proms weren't officially segregated. You could go to whichever prom you wanted! It just always happened to work out (purely by coincidence!) that all the white kids went to one and all the black kids went to another.

We also had two class songs, two class mottos, two class presidents. It wasn't racially segregated, it just always happened to be that one was white and one was black.

It was a bizarre place. I left the day after I graduated and only go back for funerals or illnesses in the family.

THIS, I can believe.  But, not Macon....it is too close to Atlanta:  The home of the entitled.

Walker: If any race other than Caucasian tries to attend the white prom, Bloodworth said they "would probably have the police come out there and escort them off the premises."
That was the case just last year as a biracial student was turned away by police.

How is that even remotely legal????

Privately-run dance, the school is not involved so it is legal. It isn't moral or just, but technically legal.

Bonzo_1116: coldf33t: I moved here from DC and was totally shocked (yes, TOTALLY) at the racism directed towards whites.  If a prom is segregated here....it is because black people want it that way.

A half black kid tried to go to last year's white prom and got tossed out by the cops.

FTFA:

"There's a white prom and then we have our integrated prom," said Bloodworth.

If any race other than Caucasian tries to attend the white prom, Bloodworth said they "would probably have the police come out there and escort them off the premises."

I read TFA and still do not believe it.  You have no idea how sensitive racial crap is here. I call BS.

It's usually a private party paid for by the white parents in a rented hall. Show up without an invitation and it's trespassing, no different than some socially outcast loner trying to get into a private house party.

It's a private party funded by bigot parents.

I was just wondering how they haven't been sued into bankruptcy yet.

Because it isn't a school sponsored event.  That's how they get around the laws.  A private event can be as racist as they want it to be and there's nothing anyone can do about it except boycott it.  I'm sure the made it a private event specifically to avoid the legal issues.  I hope enough students refuse to go to the racist prom that is a complete flop.

Racist proms suck.........the people who put on racist proms suck.

Didn't realize this was the case until reading some of the comments here. Around here the proms are all put on by the school district with some private sponsorship.

/I still think, were I a police officer, I'd quietly find a 'more important' call to attend to for a few hours.

That guy kept poking me in the ass with his baton about 10 years ago at the old Loca Luna.  I was flattered of course, but I've always been a bigger fan of Willie Terry aka Bicycle Bob aka Burrito Bob.

Hey!  I moved here.

Well, not really.  I moved to Atlanta, which any True Southerner will proudly tell you isn't The Real South.  I will not argue with that.

In some aspects it is, such as the oppressive heat and barricade your house because crime is really bad here.  BUT they are what the rest of the South should be.  Until I see change, I will NEVER move back down there.  I want my kids to have a 21st century education, not a 19th century education with 'puters.

That's actually a common discussion here.  "I've got to get my kids out of the South before they start school."  The money's good and the cost of living is low here as long as you're not hoping to educate your children beyond a 4-3 defense.  The Tampa 2 is too complex.

Um, the town I used to live in HAD an integrated prom, but it didn't stop some parents from holding their own prom anyhow where only a certain few were invited.

/true story:  I came close to going to a prom like six years ago
//I'd known the family since I was like 15, and they'd asked me to go out with their daughter
///but, as much as I wanted to do it, events came up that were beyond my control

Good on the students for leading the charge to integrate. With every generation the south is improving. It does make me wonder how many segregated proms are held because of student preference, and how many are done at the behest of the teachers and parents.
