coldf33t: I moved here from DC and was totally shocked (yes, TOTALLY) at the racism directed towards whites.  If a prom is segregated here....it is because black people want it that way.

A half black kid tried to go to last year's white prom and got tossed out by the cops.

FTFA:

"There's a white prom and then we have our integrated prom," said Bloodworth.

If any race other than Caucasian tries to attend the white prom, Bloodworth said they "would probably have the police come out there and escort them off the premises."

That was the case just last year as a biracial student was turned away by police.

It's been that way for as long as anyone can remember, and it doesn't stop at prom - homecoming is also segregated.

While still having two separate dances, the school decided to elect only one pair for king and queen for the first time this school year, and one of the integrated prom organizing students, Wallace, won.

"I felt like there had to be a change because for me to be a black person and the king to be a white person, I felt like, you know why can't we come together," Wallace asked.

But nothing changed. Wallace wasn't invited to the white homecoming. In fact, the king and queen took separate pictures for the school yearbook.

That's some deep in the bone cock-baggery.  Even separate pictures for the homecoming King and Queen.  Just WTF.  It even appears that the "BlackProm" allows white kids if they want to come, but it's the WhiteProm that's limited.

The parents bankrolling the race-based proms need a time-out and a spanking.  And possibly a deep Madingo dicking.

"When people around here are set in their ways, they are not too adamant to change," Rucker said.

WTH does that mean? Seriously, look at the edumacationing goin' on up in there. I am appalled.

'Cause that's where the white womens at.

It is known, I've seen some of their rap videos and they're very integrated in that asspect.

Most of the South has thriving gay scenes.  they are just called hunting/fishing camps

It's Macon.  Bankruptcy would be a financial step up

Because it isn't a school sponsored event.  That's how they get around the laws.  A private event can be as racist as they want it to be and there's nothing anyone can do about it except boycott it.  I'm sure the made it a private event specifically to avoid the legal issues.  I hope enough students refuse to go to the racist prom that is a complete flop.

Dear South:

You know how you keep getting upset when the rest of the civilised world thinks you're a bunch of backwater pigfarking racists?

This is why we think that.  Do something about it, and we might be inclined to treat you like grownups.

Jesus, that's what I read... I thought that maybe they had a city ordinance that made it illegal to sell interracial porn or something. This is pretty sad, but at least it makes sense.

It's usually a private party paid for by the white parents in a rented hall. Show up without an invitation and it's trespassing, no different than some socially outcast loner trying to get into a private house party.

Privately-run dance, the school is not involved so it is legal. It isn't moral or just, but technically legal.

Is this the threat where people out themselves for now knowing the difference between de jure and de facto segregation?

This is more common than we'd like to believe across a large swathe of the country. Yes it makes the news every couple years, receives negative criticisms, a handful of schools change, then the issue disappears for another couple years.

I would be there are dozens of schools still with segregated towns, mostly in small towns of under 30,000 throughout the deep south,

Oh and I should add, one thing that makes Macon a particularly tragic case is it isn't exactly a small town, but a small city. Most places like that have changed by now, and I can't believe they're so far behind here. We can only hope the next generation is more tolerant.

Cluckity: Any police officer who would escort a student off the property for daring to show up at the wrong dance is wholly unfit to be a part of the justice system in any capacity.

Christ, what an asshole.

The problem lies in the fact that it's a private event, and they can turn anyone away for any reason.  If they don't want somebody there, the organizers have the right to have them removed.  They're putting the Police Officer in a precarious situation.  If he escorts the offender out, he's vilified like you've done.  If he refuses, then he's sued by the organizers or disciplined for failure to do his job.

Y'all, please listen here.  Macon != Atlanta.  Nothing else in Georgia = Atlanta.  Atlanta is a completely different culture from anywhere else in Georgia, because of all the outsiders who have moved there for business over the years.

Savannah is at least 50 years behind Atlanta.
Augusta is at least 25-50 years behind Savannah.
Macon is at least 10 years behind Augusta.

It's sad.  It seems unreal.  But I assure you, it is true.

I dunno, if you think the black folks are in on shiat just as stupid that doesn't mean the white folks have stopped with the old-school racist garbage. Do bi-racial couples get the finger from everybody's grannies down there too?

They should translplant the whole farking town to Japan for a year, so they can realize they've got more in common than differences.

So, the school mentioned in the article is Wilcox County High School. Doing some quick googling, that is in Abbeville, GA, not Macon. In fact, it's about 70 miles south of Macon.

Now I understand this article a little more. Macon is pretty backwater, but I didn't think they were this bad.

Just to clarify, Wilcox County is not Macon.  It's not even close to Macon.  The nearest city of any size is Cordele.  It's down in south Georgia.

I realize it's a minor point to some, but although this story was reported in the Macon media, it refers to Wilcox County, a couple of counties south of Macon and accessible by absolutely no major interstates. Population 9298; median income for a household in the county is $27,483.

Most importantly: The Ocmulgee Wild Hog Festival takes place in the Wilcox County seat of Abbeville, Georgia every year on the Saturday before Mother's Day.

In other words, it's not to late to make your travel plans!

I web to school in very racist southeast Texas (near, but not in, Vidor, to give you an idea).

My school always had two proms, at least as recently as 1998. The proms weren't officially segregated. You could go to whichever prom you wanted! It just always happened to work out (purely by coincidence!) that all the white kids went to one and all the black kids went to another.

We also had two class songs, two class mottos, two class presidents. It wasn't racially segregated, it just always happened to be that one was white and one was black.

It was a bizarre place. I left the day after I graduated and only go back for funerals or illnesses in the family.

It's not organized by the school.  As I understand it, alot of schools in the south got out of the business of organizing dances & such back in the 60s because they would have to be integrated.  So they handed that responsibility off to the community, where it becomes a private party and they can invite only who they want.

DRTFA but I grew up in Georgia public schools and I've been to Macon, so let me guess:

Macon's majority black. The parents of the white kids threw a private prom off-campus the same weekend as the actual prom and only white kids are invited. The prom hosted by the school is technically integrated but effectively blacks only because few if any white kids go. And this has been going on for decades since desegregation due to a combination of institutional racism, classism and nobody wanting to rock the boat.

(rtfa)

No "official" prom, but otherwise, yup.

As long as he stays in Statesboro, he'll be fine. Some nice restaurants, museums, bars.... only been there once, but it seems like a pretty cool little town, good combination of southern charm and college town.

Ten miles in any direction though and he'll be in the deep south...

If I was black and of prom age I'd go to the white prom. I wouldn't leave. I would make them physically prevent me from going inside. When they stopped me I'd turn to my lawyer who was hiding in the bushes with a video camera and say, "Got that?" Then I'd start looking at vacation properties in Argentina.

Datelines, subby, how do they work? Wilcox County in south Georgia =/= Macon; that's just where the story was filed. Macon/Bibb County has more kids in its high schools than Wilcox County has people. Admittedly, Macon didn't integrate its public schools until 1970, and the public schools held separate proms into the '80s, but Macon is fairly progressive for Georgia outside Atlanta. They've got a university, two community theaters, two gay bars, a reform synagogue and a Unitarian Universalist church.
