Sri Lanka, where even the spiders are ladyboys.

There's no spider species that isn't venomous. Some are mostly harmless, like the daddy long legs, but ALL spiders posses some venom.

So what? They're still pretty small. Just kick it out of your way.

I think it was an interview with James Randi where the person interviewed was digging behind a desk to figure out why Arthur C. Clarke's computer wasn't working and found a plethora of insect life.

I can fully believe Sri Lanka having giant spiders. They have lots of insects to live off of.

Common names sure are fun, aren't they?

Personally, I will always think of the cellar spiders as bathtub spiders. That's where I'm used to seeing them, in my parents' old farmhouse. (They're clumsy, delicate things, and I've rescued plenty of them from possible drowning.)

The non-spider daddy long legs seem to prefer it outdoors.

/And who the heck calls a crane fly a daddy long legs?

KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!

And then shoot it, just to be sure.

Then nuke it from orbit, and seed the ground with salt.

Pretty much anything from the genus Poecilotheria ("pokeys" as they're commonly known) isn't something you want to be bitten by - they have venom that's "medically significant", like most other Old World tarantulas.  And they're *fast*, and rather aggressive.

Harry Potter fans may recall this as the "spider" that Mad-Eye Murphy tormented and killed.  In the movie, they used a Tanzanian Giant  Tailless Whipscorpion because it was scarier than any spider they could find.

My son had one.  It is not a giant; only about a half-inch across the thorax.
Learned later it's not a scorpion, and they aren't found in Tanzania.
It was tailless, however, and totally harmless.

Ok, here you go:

One time at work, had to do something messy so I grabbed a shop apron, which had been hanging on the corner of a work bench in the machine shop in the back. Denim, with a couple of large pockets in the front. So I have this thing on for an hour or so, and I sit down and kind of slide my hand down toward the left pocket. And I feel something and pull my hand up to look and it's this dessicated corpse of a large waterbug, with spiderwebs on it. I shake my hand and jump up and this..thing drops to the ground. Body about the size of a medium-sized marble, the biggest  purple widow spider I have ever seen. I say purple because its body was so engorged from the just-finished meal that it was no longer black any more. I shrieked like a little girl of course, before smashing it to bits.

Near as I could tell, it was feeding on the waterbug, in the pocket that whole time, and I had somehow managed to not place my hand in the pocket.

Had a pokie once, couldn't walk right for a month after she bit me. Learned that if you get bit by one, it is best to do as little physical activity as possible for a 2-3 days as whatever muscles you use in that time will go wonky for a month.

there have been a couple of photos of huntsman spiders in the thread, no pun intended.

I have many times captured face sized huntsman spiders in my home and taken them outside. Usually I see them in one room, ignore them as they hunt out insects for a couple of days and find them in a bedroom. Not problem, catch, take outside, release.

Have to find out the British Naturalist who went to Amazonia and allowed one of the gigantic spiders to crawl over his head. it was filmed and shown in the documentary. Face sized, plenty around, this was bigger than his head!
