It pretty well punctured the GOP myth that sequester consequences wouldn't be visible though.

But of course now they'll squeal that Obama's pay cut should go to restore the tours.

I commend this action, but if he really wanted to show solidarity he would give up 20% of his income like the rest of them.  They are giving up 20% for 14 weeks, which amounts to 5% of their yearly income.

Still, nice...and, done in one.

20% for 14 weeks is 5.4% of their yearly income.

Obama is giving back 20% a month for 10 months, or 4.2% of his yearly income.

To match Obama's gesture, the Republicans will propose a 5% tax cut for the Job Creators.

Doesn't he have a small pile from royalties? I'm not going to bother looking up recent sales figures but you'd think he could earmark his entire "salary" towards running the house.

2013-04-03 04:45:32 PM
How do I just know that this will be a cause for outrage ong a certain segment if the population?

I mean, in order to predict with such certitude that this thread (and the media) will contain any number of people angry about this for reasons and such, those people would have to be so pathetically predictable in their behavior and attitudes when the President does anything, that they are nothing more than sad caricatures.

Right wing talk radio has to come up with something. It will probably something along these lines.

We biatch and moan about lawmakers walking out of the Capitol and straight into a K-street lobbying firm upon leaving office, and at the same time call for their pay to be cut.

If we really want loyalty, paying for it would be a good place to start.

Most presidents could go without their income.  You'd have to go back a lot of administrations before you found someone in the oval office that wasn't rich.

Gecko Gingrich: 20% for 14 weeks is 5.4% of their yearly income.

Obama is giving back 20% a month for 10 months, or 4.2% of his yearly income.

He's...giving up 5% for 10 months?  Am I reading the article wrong, or does the part where it says "returning 5% a month" mean something different?

(No snark intended.)

Actually I think Clinton came out of his presidency pretty deeply in the red, because of all his legal bills from the civil suit and the impeachment hearings and other assorted shenanigans that characterized his presidency.

Of course he was obviously able to make it all back many hundreds of times over with post-presidency appearances, speeches, books, etc. Anyway I think its safe to say that in the modern age a guy who serves as the most powerful man on earth for 8 years need not worry about hurting for money for the rest of his life.

Sorry, slight typo. He is giving back 5% a month for 10 months. The rest of the math is correct though.

Yep. 5% per month, but retroactive to march 1st which comes to to be ~4.2% annualized.

Posted before I finished.

My prediction is that they will say that this isn't really that much money for Obama. Probably throw in something like. "Well this just means he will have to use french's mustard like the rest of us for a few weeks, while real American are struggling he mocks us with this empty gesture. "

Republicans will just whine about why he doesn't use that money to fund White House tours while conveniently never mentioning WIC, SNAP(food stamps), and a whole host of other domestic programs (WIC and SNAP actually have a positive ROI too) are suffering.
