The important question to ask is:

Will this mean we can have a new updated version of TIE Fighter?

Well, that sucks. They made some truly great games in the past, but it's been a while since they made anything I wanted to play.

God, I hope so.

Wired points out that this frees up Disney to license things like Grim Fandango to other studios, which means it's more likely that we'll get reboots of classic LucasArts properties. I don't kow if I buy that, but it would be some kind of silver lining if it did.

Still, this sucks. I still remember playing the original Monkey Island when it came out. This is almost as sad as they day I learned that Infocom was, effectively, defunct.

i loved lucasarts to death as a kid, but i think the last game they made that i enjoyed was republic commando. it might be time they folded and the license just get passed out. maybe they'll even farm out some of the older games to be re-done as IOs releases

The time has come for Disney to start farming out the old properties from the early 2000's starting with MAKE KOTOR3, RC2, and a TIE Fighter super HD remaster!

They were little more than Lucas's vanity project at this point. They haven't made a great game in years, and notably all the decent Star Wars games were produced by other people under license, so there really wasn't any reason for them to exist.

I played SW:TOR before it became FTP, and it always made me so depressed. I hung in there as long as I could, then felt guilty about cancelling my subscription. I wanted to support the game. It had so much potential. But, it just got destroyed from the top by people a whole lot more concerned about how much money they were making that week instead of how much money they could make in a year if they put more people to work on finishing the damn game.

Geez, they were morons anyway.

All they had to do was remake this:

img2u.info

Updated with new graphics, improve the gameplay, and offer a season pass for the first 4 or 5 major DLCs (with new missions and spacecraft), and they'd have people lined up to buy it.

Instead, they kept releasing stuff like "The Force Unleashed" - which while decent, was not what fans were really clamoring for.

I'd easily spend the $59.99 price on a new X-Wing series, and another $29.99 on a season pass.... offer it through Steam, and don't get too ticky-tack with crap DLC releases (I don't expect to pay a buck for individual spacecraft or some fancy flame paint job for my Tie Interceptor, but I might spend a couple of bucks to get a complete selection of Pirate Franken-fighters or a selection of lesser-known Incom fighters).

If they had done this before Galaxies was created, they could have even tied it in.... and been far more successful with that product, as well.

Instead, LucasArts blew off what their fanbase pleaded and begged for for the past 2 decades and delivered mostly mediocrity.

"After evaluating our position in the games market, we've decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games,"

Yeah, because they NEVER had any "quality" games before, did they? What a joke, but not unexpected at all. I had hopes that Disney wouldn't fark this up, but they weren't really high hopes or anything.

Space Flight sims are dead, sadly.

I'd kill for a new Wing Commander game.

I'd MURDER KILL for Bethesda to get their hands on the Space Quest line.

And I'd RAPE MURDER KILL for Bioware to get free from EA, get hold of the Planescape: Torment ownership, and put out a sequel.

they did, but the last one they made was in 2006 (republic commando, which ended up somewhat mixes as i recall, even though i enjoyed it) and before that you're going all the way back to what, the early 1990's? Not counting games they just published and didn't develop (since thats the same thing disney is intending on doing going forward) you have to go way back to see them really stirking it big as a developer

Seriously, at this point it was more of a mercy killing than anything else.. whoever was making the big decisions at LucasArts for the last 10 years seemed to have 'fail in the most spectacular way possible' as one of their life goals.

I always hoped they'd come back with a fantastic new take on the SCUMM/GrimE games.

Just started revisiting Grim Fandango a couple weeks ago. Damn I'm going to miss this company.

Yeah Force Unleashed sucked, but the Lego Star Wars games were a total blast. In 2004 the company went from 450 employees to 190. They then basically stuck to Star Wars games. Battlefront, Lego Star Wars were basically the only good ones of that genre, then they made Mercenaries which was a LOT of fun.

2008 rolls around and Jim Ward leaves and suddenly the IP is in the sh*tter. Had a lot of commercial failures and then Disney got them in the Lucasfilm buyout.

What's good is that all of them were laid off, so the opportunity for them to reform and finish their non-Star Wars games under development, could arise.

They published all kinds of games into the 2000's. Even into 2012

Here's a list
