Being out of shape isn't this guy's biggest problem, his biggest hurdle to NFL success is that he's fu*king stupid. Ain't no changing that.

Only way he'd earn my respect is if he grows a Wilfred Brimley stache and embraces his destiny as a JaWalrus.

"JaMarcus Hits the Gym."

What is this story doing in Sports?  I'd expect a story about a building collapse to go straight to the front page.  And where are the photos of dead and crippled bodies covered in bricks and crushed workout equipment?

The Bears released a gallery of gym pictures the other day. I don't know if it was Roberto Garza benching 135lb, or a bearded Jay Cutler doing lunges with 95lb, but something about them made me think that the players aren't taking organized workouts very seriously yet.

JaMarcus "Down to 308lbs" Russell?

The dude has the body of Rex Ryan and the intelligence of Dez Bryant. Top farking percentage right there.

Wearing a couple diamond (or whatever) earrings while working out?  I just don't think this guy gets it...

This is a joke right? I'm pretty sure that was just viral advertising for that gym and had nothing to do with Russell, who I'm not sure is the best poster boy for your athletic training prowess.

If he gets back into the NFL then I think Barkley ought to give the NBA another go.

Jamarcus Russell is a great player. Get over it!!

He's going to be great at balancing on BOSU balls and stability discs by the time he's completed his training. Totally applicable to an NFL quarterback.

Fire your trainer. 135lb deadlifts? Unless you're doing 50 reps that's not doing shiat. His trainer has him running around on bosu non-sense instead of pulling and pushing a farking heavy sled. Hope all those fast-twitch calf muscles help you with your goal of losing weight (they won't). He should be lifting heavy for medium reps, fixing his farking diet, and training for explosiveness and speed. Not this mickey-mouse bullshiat.

Jesus wept. I'm 47. Based on that workout video, I can do more than he can. That just shouldn't be. He was a #1 NFL draft pick. I'm nobody. Dude's not trying. Which is why he is where he is in the first place, I suppose. So add "profoundly learning disabled" to his list of drawbacks as a QB prospect.

A great player of what is the question, because it's not football.

Now if that isn't inspirational, I don't know what is!

I have no problem with with balance exercises.  If a QB is off balance while throwing, it affects the path of the ball.  I do find the video hilarious though.  He needs to do cardio more than balance and core.  They need a video of him running the track or treadmill, not lifting weights on a balance ball.

I think the whole point of his workouts (if you listened to them talk) is that he can't do the heavy/explosive stuff yet. He was so fat and out of shape that all his stabilizers, i.e. hips, knees, were so weak. If he even tried to do the heavy things he would have terrible form. Have you ever seen people with really weak and tight hips try to squat? They'll wreck their shiat.

Unless he's coming back as a serious running QB I'm not sure I agree.  Yes, cardio is a good thing but how much continuous running does a QB do in a game?  He's going to have at least 30 seconds to recover after every 8-10 seconds of heavy activity.

Also, it's hard to say how good or bad his cardio is right now.  There are a lot of fat athletes (like linemen) that have amazing cardio for their size... probably better cardio than a random pro baseball power hitter who would be 50 or 60 lbs lighter.

I'm not trying to compare him to a lineman, I'm trying to compare him to other QBs.  Even most tanks sized QBs, Roethlisberger for example, can run when needed.  If he can't get away from people like Wilfork, Ngata, Pouha, Williams, or Atkins, then there's a big problem.  Yes, I know people like Ngata have chased down much faster people from behind, but you don't want to have standing still speed around them either.

JaMarcus Russell ain't never going to make it back to the NFL. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. He's just another million dollar talent with a ten cent head, getting hustled by some trainer trying to get PR for his gym in this video.

But he isn't a total waste of skin, he's just misdirecting his natural talent. What is his natural talent? Throwing things a long, long way. There is no Olympic medal for throwing a football, but there is one for throwing a javelin. And Russell has experience in this sport, having done it when he was in high school in Mobile, Alabama.

What he needs to do is to quit mucking around with football, and restart flinging the javelin again. World class javelin throwers are big stocky fellows anyway, just think how much of an advantage he would have if he got his fat ass into the throws. Let's face it, the man is a PR nightmare as a football player----but with the proper coaching and PR team, he could be an Olympic champion---the feelgood comeback story of the year.

Fair enough, but speed and cardio are two different things.  Not to mention the fact that when QBs run, generally they're looking for gains of around 8-10 yards depending on where the marker is.  If his tank is out of gas when faced with the prospect of running across a medium sized room...  he's got bigger problems than cardio capacity.

I'm just saying that I think that the strength and conditioning coach in the video is being realistic.  What should be prioritized in order for this wreck of a man to even resemble a QB?  If he was going into a boxing match, I would say weight and cardio would be key.  But he's (theoretically) going to be a predominately stationary dude that passes a ball while other bigger dudes try and tackle him.

I'd save the intense cardio for later on in his... ummmm... recovery?

Great idea, then when Jamarcus's throws end up in the stands, he'll kill people.

And not even Raiders fans. Real people, too.

you'll never lose weight working out. period.  Science has proved it an my anecdotal expeirence backs it up AFAIC.   I was once a 330lb gym rat who worked out every single day, including weekends and holidays, for at least an hour a day of cardio and weights, and while I was a 330lb lummox who could run a few miles and do a fair number of pull-ups, I was still 330.(and eventually climbed to 370) .  Eating lo-carb OTOH?  lost weight like a motherfarker.  Workouts were twice a week or less but dropped 100lbs in just under 3 months  (ten years later doing it again but this time its only 45 lbs in the last almost 4 months but I started at 270 this time)

So the Raiders, not being content to draft the LSU quarterback as one of the worst picks ever, are now going to start the guy who was his backup at LSU.
Awesome.

So what? Every QB in the league can toss up a hail-mary. He can throw the ball a long way, but it'll just get picked off by the cornerback who's the only player within 15 yards of the pass, and run back for a touchdown. Arm strength without accuracy is useless in the NFL.

Uhm, Einstain, I didn't say he was a good QB. What I said was that he threw the ball a long way which by itself is more than the tards in this thread bashing him will ever do in their life.

Russell: bad QB with a strong arm
All tards posting in this thread: bad QB with no arm strength, and losers in EVERY WAY besides.

You are a perfect example of what I am talking about. You aren't smart enough to even understand the meaning of the phrase "by itself". Plus, I bet you are a rag-arm.

So just imagine how useless all the Russell-bashers like you are. You have all that uselessness AND you can't throw a football.

Moreover, your point about the hail Mary misses the point. True all QBs can throw a long ball, but NONE of them can throw one 84 yards on the fly. So to equate any pussy-tossed hail Mary to Russell's titanic 84-yarder is daft.

And that is the point. All the Russell bashers in this thread have NOTHING. ZERO. NADA. ZILCH.

Welcome to zilch-land, Russell-bashers. Come trot out your hate because you haven't amounted to jack squat.

I don't know about "science has proved it," and if you want to trade anecdotes, I spent 5 months last summer training for an Ironman (11-18 hours per week of workouts). Lost 15% of my body weight (215 -> 180) when it was all said and done, and that was without any significant change in diet. If anything, I probably snacked more than normal.

Weight training and mild cardio probably won't help you lose weight, since any fat loss is going to be offset by muscle gain, but a steady diet of 1-2 hour cardio workouts daily will certainly lead to weight loss.

He doesn't need to look like much of anything. He does, however, need to be able to move, and be strong enough to either fend off a tackler, or at least get up again most of the time when angry 300 pound steroid mutants run over him.

In fairness, that's largely because Les Miles is a moron when it comes to QBs. All they did when Flynn took over was win a national title.

As for the video, they said in the video itself that it was the day where he was doing light weights - he wasn't max lifting. As for the headline, of course they're not going to show a video of him doing one exercise; that would be ridiculously boring and then people would say "well he's really good at one exercise, but that doesn't help with anything."

/Russell sucks
//but can't fault a guy for trying to get better

2013-04-04 12:13:20 PM
My impression of that video is that he talked and acted like a guy who was not familiar with working out.

I'm betting most of his talent was natural ability and athleticism, and he never really had to work that hard at it.   When that stopped being good enough, he didn't have the tools to do any better.

/I am unencumbered by any further facts about JaMarcus Russell.

2013-04-05 02:28:18 PM
You know why people who haven't had a drink in 20 years still refer to themselves as alcoholics?  Because people can change their external behavior, but no adult ever really changes deep down.  So, yeah, JaMarcus can work out and get his weight down and maybe even convince some desperate team (Jets?) to take a chance on him.  And, yes, he can throw a football 84 yards.  Athleticism was never his problem. But just give him a contract, and then put him in a pressure situation, and you'll see the JaMarcus that all us Raiders fans know so well.
