Barfmaker: Gott damn auto start video...

Why do we need these videos in every news story?  They add virtually no value to the article.  Do we really need to hear his son shout F*CK YOU at the press?

Really, why do I need a 2 minute video to tell me the same thing I could have read in 5 or 6 seconds?

Something like that allegedly happened here in Lexington, at a small store just down the street: they say the owner was buying SNAP cards for cash, pills or "synthetic marijuana" and using them to buy stuff at other stores like Wal-Mart. Apparently they didn't buy much stock for the Barter House though as its few shelves were always almost empty, so all I ever got there was beer and for that I paid cash.

I would give EBT card holders a shopping list and make them go buy my stuff, bring it to me, and pay them half its cost.  I have a business to run, no time for Walmart or cops.

When I was working on my masters at a large state university, it was well known that you could get half-priced food in the university's food court.

The school had a rule that underclassmen had to live on campus and a certain dollar amount ($600/mo, I believe) had to be deposited to their I.D. cards (like a debit card) for food purchases at said food court, and select restaurants around campus.

These young men and women needed extra money for beer and clubbing more than they needed a hamburger, so they would wait outside the entrance and look for upperclassmen and grad students. You would tell them what you wanted, they would buy it on their card, and you gave them half the amount on the receipt.

I always wondered what happened to those students.

And the Kennedys ran hooch when nobody wanted the Micks around, either.  Sh*t, a pack of wolves in three piece suits just bent us over the sink to the tune of 16,000,000,000,000.00 and blew it on Cayman vacations and whores.  And they still have their jobs.  Go ahead, make me give a sh*t about Achnad trying to game the system.

But see, he stole money that taxpayers were told would go to POOR people.  We should be allowed to control every single movement of every penny of that and wax with outrage at any malfeasance.    Now, welfare money that goes to RICH people, well, they know what they're doing and of COURSE they don't need food.  They just need billions more to leverage the dirt from under our feet.  That's different.  That's business.

Good. Now, we just need to eliminate the rest of the fraud. Put names and pictures of the lawful recipient on food stamps.

This.  The money is already spent anyway.  Every farking gas station in every farking major city has a big sign letting you know they accept EBT for all the "food" the gas station sells.  I have the same attitude towards people who cheat on their taxes.  They're just going to go out and spend that money anyway.  Are we buying them a sports stadium?  No? Then fark it.  Every other time an economic discussion comes up, the issue is just a fraction of a percentage of something else, so "who cares", so....who cares.

It happens all of the time, here.  There is one ice cream truck that cruises around, and I've seen the driver with a full cart of treats pay for it with an EBT card, then walk right out to his ice cream truck.  There's also a Chinese restaurant owner that buys cartloads of meat on her card.  I used to have to slice up hundreds of pounds of beef round for that woman.

How is this fraud? He wasn't scamming cards from the government. Those cards were given to people in legitimate need. They elected to sell him the cards as a way to raise money. He offered them a service, and used them to buy the food that those people were gonna buy anyway. He was just being a shrewd businessman. Why is everyone all up in his case?

I got another set of whys. Why is this a "political" news story? Why are they so animated about it being "your tax dollars?" And why did they not interview the investigators? I am not saying he is not guilty I am just irritated by all the right-wing hype on it. What ever happen to reporting the news for news sake? Every news story now has to have some political backspin to it. I frankly do not watch TV news or subscribe to any paper that leans left or right. Here in  NM, there was a bill that went up to the Governor to sign into law that forbade ATMs that took welfare cards out of liquor stores, strip clubs, casinos and the like, but last I heard, she gave it a "pocket veto". In essence, if she doesn't sign it, after 45 days it expires. Good times. Building the economy on the backs off those least likely to afford it. Smart.

I really wish it were this much fun to read about politicians stealing our money and giving it to their rich buddies. Or maybe a story about rich farmers who still take billions in subsidies. Then, we would have some other forms of government waste to sensationalize. The purpose of these kinds of stories is to give you the feeling that the reason you're broke is that other broke people are taking your money.

/Meanwhile, the guy who has 1,000 times more money that you both is assumed to have "earned" all of it.

That is a cop buying the drugs, not providing the drugs (which they do also... remember D.C. mayor Marion Barry?  All he wanted was some leg.)

The EBT cards are issued by the government and the government only, correct?  It seems they produced these EBT cards with the express purpose of offering them at well below market price to manufacture a criminal.  Sure, the guy jumped at the chance, but spending thousands of tax payer dollars to create criminals when there are plenty enough out there already just seems wrong.

So the businessman competes with passersby. I would take into account the risk I was running and pay less than you suggest, as the guy in TFA seems to have done. Or I'd say fark it, aint worth the risk.

Scorpio Rex: But he couldn't have bought the food stamps at just cents on the dollar if the undercover agent hadn't provided them, right?  So without police involvement there couldn't have been a crime.  Or am I missing something?

"Two competing tests exist for determining whether entrapment has taken place, known as the "subjective" and "objective" tests. The "subjective" test looks at the defendant's state of mind; entrapment can be claimed if the defendant had no "predisposition" to commit the crime. The "objective" test looks instead at the government's conduct; entrapment occurs when the actions of government officers would have caused a normally law-abiding person to commit a crime.[4] "

It is not entrapment to ask a person if he wants to buy drugs or food stamps; it is merely an inquiry into his state of mind.  Nor is it entrapment to pretend to be amenable to a request for drugs or food stamps.

Gordon Bennett: Stupid man. He should know that you are only entitled to use public money to prop up your business if you're a major bank or investment firm.

You mean the legally then.

vingamm: I got another set of whys. If I see too much about something in one direction I take it off my reading list

I was wondering the same thing, until I saw it was the Washington Examiner. Everything is political there.

DROxINxTHExWIND: URAPNIS: With so many other people abusing the "system", who gives a shiat, really?

I really wish it were this much fun to read about politicians stealing our money and giving it to their rich buddies. Or maybe a story about rich farmers who still take billions in subsidies. Then, we would have some other forms of government waste to sensationalize. The purpose of these kinds of stories is to give you the feeling that the reason you're broke is that other broke people are taking your money.

/Meanwhile, the guy who has 1,000 times more money that you both is assumed to have "earned" all of it.

But we have to keep subsidizing Monsanto, or Ma and Pa farmer will go out of business and get gobbled up by the greedy cities!

For the record, I'm glad those asshats got caught, and I hope they have to pay back the money they scammed, but they are small potatoes compared to the real grift going on in the U.S. Unlike the people who get their "news" from the Washington Examiner, I'm pretty damn sure it's not poor people on food stamps who are actively running this country into the ground.

Noticeably F.A.T.: master_dman: I'm SHOCKED that welfare fraud is rampant.

You should be shocked, since welfare fraud is not rampant at all. Unless of course you think that any non-zero amount is "rampant", but in that case you need to consult a dictionary.

We don't know the frequency of this kind of fraud because it's hard to detect.  Even malnourished children aren't a good indicator of food stamp diversion.  So you're both blowing smoke.

"What'cha you doing?"

"Trying to extrapolate the total amount of nickel and dime welfare fraud that is doubtless extant from the vast variety of assumptions that present themselves from one story of fraud."

"You do realize that AIG just unceremoniously bent he treasury over the hood of it's car to the tune of 53,000,000,000.00 and blew some of it on golf outings, don't you?

"Don't confuse me."

Shrapnel:

Problem: somebody gets caught abusing food stamps. Solution: get rid of food stamps.

Fark that: I'd farking starve. I might have to eat people.

My SNAP (formerly known as Food Stamps) goes solely to food. And thanks to the taxpayers I eat better than ever before; mind you I grew up poor in an era when poor meant underfed. My benefits, which I'm grateful for, get treated with deep respect. Don't punish me for the actions of a few tweakers and pillheads.

So, anyway, is it less reprehensible to eat 5 year olds than to molest them? I have no sexual attraction to them whatsoever, but there are times when they look rather tasty. Tender. Succulent. Juicy.

Big_Fat_Liar:

I can't be bothered to give a shiat.  Our government wastes so much money that a little extra spent in-country, by real people, even if they are scammers, just doesn't bother me.

Thank you. But I'm still going to use my benefits as they're intended. I learned decades ago that life is easier when you're not addicted to anything illegal and expensive, and it's actually nice to have to worry about being overweight for a change.

How much did we decide to spend to study why lesbians are fat?

Lesbians are fat? Not the lesbians I fall in love with. The easiest way to get me to kill for somebody would be to be gorgeous without makeup, carry yourself like Theresa Russell, be otherwise tomboyish if not butch, and have no use for men except to occasionally take pity on me. Cynicism is also useful except when applied to me: anybody can see I'm too stupid to have ulterior motives, that when I say "I just want to be near you!" that's literally very true. Is it any wonder that I'd rather drink alone at home than risk anything like a social life?

Speaking of which, Bulleit 95% Rye is pretty damn good. And what good are a liver and a brain if you can't devote your not-strictly-necessary cash to beaing on them? (I've been wearing the same underwear for 12 years or more, though yes I do wash them, and I wear my $10 Wal-Mart sneakers till they literally fall apart.)

Anyway.
