Very interesting but if one thing were to go wrong, it would go completely and horribly wrong.

Not too many workers go kayaking in a foundry.

Probably the same reason it seems risky to drive your car down Tire Blowout and Crash Boulevard.

That's like 110 in real degrees, right?

I'm heading out to the Big Island in a couple weeks. We have a 10 mile hike out to the flows planned. We opted not to do the shore line boat trip.

Wasn't there a researcher who wanted to build an asbestos kayak and ride it on a lava stream?  I don't know if he ever did it, but I do know that a) he did a lot of crazy things close to active volcanoes and b) he's dead now.

I was just out there a week ago - on a much larger boat.  There are three lava/ocean entry points right now and it's really flowing.  Those cliffs he was crawling around on fall down all of the time.  There is nothing to support them.  Also, any sand that is there is super duper sharp, like glass.  There are also a lot of burning hot chunks flowing around in the water.  This dude is insane.  And lucky.

If you head out from the Lava viewing point (go well before 2-3pm when the rangers get there) it's only a 2.5 mile hike out to the flows.  You'll get a silly little lecture if you get back after 3pm when the rangers are in full swing but they don't give tickets.
Watch out for fresh flows - there are a lot of them just laying around -

Why? While I'm curious to know why people do intentionally dangerous stuff that has no benefit to anyone, it's their life. They can do what they want with it. What puzzles me is why do you people think it's "cool"? It's the definition of stupidity. Farkers talk about Darwinism all of the time. This guy is a classic case.

I know the stuff flows like syrup on a cold day, but it doesn't take much to suddenly send a bit ten feet and I would have liked to have seen what happens when a splashed bit of liquid rock hits the arm of one of the kayakers...or if a decent sized wave had pushed them into the flow.

someone needs to pay Darwin his due.

I have walked close enough to that exact lava flow to put a stick in it.  While I was down there a guy came along and went swimming just off to the side of where the lava was hitting the water.  The only danger these guys were in was inhaling that smog thats created when the lava hits the water.

It's like the Grizzly Man, sometimes you get away with doing stupid stuff, but if you tempt fate enough you can be the first person killed doing something really dumb, and we'll all laugh at you.

Unfortunately, he's got to die doing this first to get his Darwin card stamped.  However, even if he doesn't but inspires other stupid people to do this who then die, I think he should get an honorable mention.

Couple things I guess. For one, adrenaline junkies. Thrill of danger and unpredictability. The other, is they have a TV show to do this for. We all know people will do stupid stuff for entertainment for the masses.

My guide who walked us out onto the flow goes out there every single day.  He does stuff like put his shoe in lava and watch the sole burn.  He has a picture of himself on a surfboard on top of lava as the board is catching fire. He's not dead yet.  I've been sending people to him for years.

"Cool" and "Safe" are sets that have very little overlap. "Cool" and "Stupid", however, have a large amount of overlap.

Does that clarify the subject for you?
