If you are under 40 I don't see how anything about U2 could be cool.

I'm well over 40 and never thought they were cool.

/The only band more overrated than U2 is Lincoln Park
//I say that because Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan are not bands

I have no problem with people optimizing their taxes in the country they live in.  Regardless of the legality, I do see an issue with living in a country and moving the money to a country you don't give a crap about.  The former is taking advantage of exemptions that are there for a reason (well, supposedly anyways) while the latter is a race to the bottom as well as being a free rider.

I don't take issue with others seeing things differently, UNLESS they simply wave the magic wand of "eh, its legal" and therefore its morally ok.  Things do not become fine simply because they are legal, nor are they not fine because they are illegal.  With enough money and the right country I can probably marry an 8 year old.

/absolutely hates encouraging a race to the bottom between countries, states, you name it.

Nope.  Everything the band did with their money was legal and above board.  Ireland got rid of its tax exemption for artists, so they moved their money to another EU country.

And it has no bearing on how much he gives to charity.

Oooh I bet the song starts with a heavily delayed guitar going something along the lines of "ching-etty ching-etty, ching-etty"

/awful awful band
//keep hiding behind that delay edge..no one will ever know you're marginal at best

Dwight_Yeast: last I heard, Bono was living in Manhattan.

CSB: a friend of mine has a very wealthy friend that lives in Manhattan.  few years ago just after the "Claw" tour had wrapped up, they were going to the friend's apartment and at the elevator.  a shortish pudgy dude and 2-3 teenagerish girls were walking up, and (duh) it was Bono.  My friend is like "DUDE BONO!  HOLY shiat!  I SAW YOU IN CHICAGO!" and Bono was like, "hey man, 'ow yer doon, fanks!"

Mateorocks: I love(d) U2...but that last album really sucked.

compeltely disagree.  i think it is outstanding, but produced as a coherent "album" in the download/on demand age.  it has a flow to it, a rhythm, like classic albums.  and they picked one of th weakest songs on the album (Get On Your Boots) as the single, when Magnificent (truly) should have been the lead song instaead of like, the 3rd single.  I think it is fantastic.

also, bono is a douche.

Crewmannumber6: U2 is by no means the only ones, but they are the worst offenders of having convinced themselves that their musical genius is not finite. A lot of great acts only had 1 or 2, if they're really lucky 3, very good albums, but that's all they had in them. U2 seems to think that everyone is going to think anything they do will be as good as Boy or The Joshua Tree, an they are mistaken.

If that were the case why wildly change direction every few albums? Just keep writing With or Without You. Pop, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb and Joshua Tree sound like three entirely different bands backing Bono... Whose singing is far richer than ever.

There's no hate like U2 hate. Except maybe the Beatles or Rush. The tax thing is beyond BS. Everyone cites the same source which has been discredited. Bono spends his life running around the world for aid to Africa... Gee, how terrible. And the last album was fantastic.

Yeah, now that I agree with.  It's immoral to do what they did, but it wasn't illegal.

And to add insult to the whole thing, neither Bono nor the Edge spend most of their time in Ireland, even though they retain citizenship.  Edge lives in Malibu, and last I heard, Bono was living in Manhattan.

If they don't even live in Ireland, why should they pay taxes there? The U2 hate on fark is almost as retarded as the haters themselves.

Wow, I never understood the U2 hate. They make good music, and are a blast to see live.

Besides, at least they're not the Rolling Stones

That's the classic move.  Don't pay your fair share in taxes, then pay part of it in the name of 'charity.'  It is one reason why 'charity' is deeply undemocratic..

Right! Because apparently it's much more 'democratic' to have to forcibly give part of your income to the government without having any say in how it will be spent.

Did Ireland cease to have elections recently?  Did the Dail somehow disband without anyone noticing?  Are you a moron?

Pro tip:  One of these questions is not like the others.
