I've never seen Bono hate like the Bono hate they have in Dublin.  Seriously.  You want to get a bar riled up?  Walk in and tell them you really admire the guy and ask if anyone knows where he lives.

Nope.  Everything the band did with their money was legal and above board.  Ireland got rid of its tax exemption for artists, so they moved their money to another EU country.

And it has no bearing on how much he gives to charity.

/can't stand the guy

That's the classic move.  Don't pay your fair share in taxes, then pay part of it in the name of 'charity.'  It is one reason why 'charity' is deeply undemocratic..

I have no problem with people optimizing their taxes in the country they live in.  Regardless of the legality, I do see an issue with living in a country and moving the money to a country you don't give a crap about.  The former is taking advantage of exemptions that are there for a reason (well, supposedly anyways) while the latter is a race to the bottom as well as being a free rider.

I don't take issue with others seeing things differently, UNLESS they simply wave the magic wand of "eh, its legal" and therefore its morally ok.  Things do not become fine simply because they are legal, nor are they not fine because they are illegal.  With enough money and the right country I can probably marry an 8 year old.

/absolutely hates encouraging a race to the bottom between countries, states, you name it.

Right! Because apparently it's much more 'democratic' to have to forcibly give part of your income to the government without having any say in how it will be spent.

Your failure at humor is only exceeded by your attempts at thinking. Just because the majority 'votes' to get other people's money doesn't mean it's just or that they're entitled to it. The morons are those who think charity is "deeply undemocratic" when it's actually one of the most democratic forms of altruism possible. Dolts like you dislike it because it actually calls for personal involvement instead of posturing and pontificating and also denies you the opportunity to tell others what they can do with their own income.

Yeah, now that I agree with.  It's immoral to do what they did, but it wasn't illegal.

And to add insult to the whole thing, neither Bono nor the Edge spend most of their time in Ireland, even though they retain citizenship.  Edge lives in Malibu, and last I heard, Bono was living in Manhattan.

U2 is by no means the only ones, but they are the worst offenders of having convinced themselves that their musical genius is not finite. A lot of great acts only had 1 or 2, if they're really lucky 3, very good albums, but that's all they had in them. U2 seems to think that everyone is going to think anything they do will be as good as Boy or The Joshua Tree, an they are mistaken.

Not hard at all. I've heard a number of the songs and went 'yeah, not enjoying this one bit' followed by changing the channel, shutting off the stereo, or going to an alternate input method. And it's not like all of R&H was good. I just don't think they'll top War or Joshua Tree for me. They keep trying, and their fan base is large.. I'm just not among it. They seem to be doing well in spite of me, so, good on 'em. Enjoy if that works for you.

There's no hate like U2 hate. Except maybe the Beatles or Rush. The tax thing is beyond BS. Everyone cites the same source which has been discredited. Bono spends his life running around the world for aid to Africa... Gee, how terrible. And the last album was fantastic.

If that were the case why wildly change direction every few albums? Just keep writing With or Without You. Pop, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb and Joshua Tree sound like three entirely different bands backing Bono... Whose singing is far richer than ever.

Agreed until I heard most of it live... It settled in on me and I really love it now. U2 is always better live for some reason. I think they tend to hold on to tightly in the studio where as live they let it rip.

I'm not betting on it.  Nightcastle seemed to be on the edge of release for years before it was actually released.  Romanov was mentioned at the last two winter tours and I remember it being announced that last year's spring tour would be the last Beethoven's Last Night show because they'd be "touring to promote a new album next spring" and there wasn't a spring tour this year.

I find it funny that the people who are most aggressive about people avoiding taxes are the ones that don't earn any money and don't have to worry about half (or more) of their earnings being ripped away by the government.  Shocker - people like to keep what they earn, and the more that is seized by a government, the more the "top earners" in that country look to flee.

/ God knows anyone - even Bono - can do more good with their own money than any government that's ever existed.

Why is everying mis-reading a Bono quote and thinking this is actually the album name?

All he was saying is that U2 is struggling with its mortality and relevance as a band, and the album they'tre currently working on - which needs about 10 songs to be complete, as most albums do - is being looked at internally as a project to validate their continued existance as a band.

So he says, jokingly, that the band's calling it '10 Reasons to Exist' because it's kind of a make-it-or-break it album, considering how popular No Line On the Horizon was(n't).

Annnnnnnd the media spreads the word that it's actually their album title. It's comical.
