Some years ago my friend, Gary, and I were hunting with his uncle. Jake was up there in years and not in the best of health. He took his favorite spot as Gary and I moved deeper in the woods. Confident that Jake had all the comforts he would need for a day in the woods.

Sadly, we found Jake. Seated on the ground and leaning back against a tree. Who knows when he died. At first we thought he'd fallen asleep or hit his nip bottle a little too much. It was one of the saddest, and happiest moments of my life. I hope I go out like that. Rifle in hand, sitting in the woods on a cold day.

Yeah, because if I make a little personal memorial to my dad, I want every dipshiat nimrod who might stumble across it to go to the newspapers, track me down, and invite themselves to grieve with me.

Farker still comes off as creepy.  I could see wanting to maintain an entire cemetery, but a memorial for a single person that you have no relation to and hunting down the family...creepy.

My high school employer, a rotund middle-aged Italian who was like a father to me, died exactly how and when he would have wanted:  right after beating the crap out of some snot-nosed 20-something at handball.

Obviously, we all need to go out and actively take part in shaping the stories of our world.  I'm going to go dig up my back yard looking for animal bones, then tell the local newspaper to find the former residents who lived here.  I can then grieve with them over their dead pets and then persecute them for being a serial killer.

OK, this brings up something that has been bugging me for a long time: if the remains of someone has been buried in a cemetery, placed in a mausoleum, or cremated and sifted into an urn, then what exactly is the purpose of making memorials at the location where they died? Do people think the the spirits of the departed hang around where they shuffled off the mortal coil, kind of like the characters at the end of Our Town? Here's a hint: mortal remains are placed in cemeteries. mausoleums and urns to act as memorials in and of themselves. I could understand if there wasn't a body, such as someone lost at sea, or disintegrated in some type of explosion or crash. Otherwise, you aren't commemorating their life; you are celebrating their death, which is something that most people wouldn't prefer to remember (I suspect), unless you are talking about some type of arch villain that the world is better off without.

(And if the spirits of the departed do spend eternity hanging around the sites of their deaths, then all that I can say is that the afterlife is seriously lame.)

End rant.

That was the original intent. And then it was a middle-aged guy who left the memorial. Not the little girl in the photo.

The Farker was intent on comforting the little girl.

Jesus christ, some of you farkers, in your "acceptance" of all things creepy get weirded out over this? Farking relax people. He polished up a spot he stood at where someone loved had died, not get arrested for necrophillia. I've felt that sort of "connection" too. I've been to spots where someone died, and it wasn't some old battlefield that everyone gets to visit. Perhaps it's a gesture of sympathy and helping with closure. I don't find it creepy, especially if you're a historian type that likes to look up stuff just because. Unusual, but pretty tame actually, IMHO.
