My grandfather, god rest his soul, lived near Cathlamet and rescued a tourist who capsized his canoe and was also clinging to a piling. 80 year old grandpa and his 75 year old neighbor motored out and plucked him out of the river.

I guess the lesson is to not go canoeing on the Columbia; or at least stay close to the pilings.
