That article sure went out of its way to play up the threat level of the guns while downplaying the man himself.

An honest article would have put pistol or handgun in the title. One trying to sensationalize would put semi-auto or semi-auto pistol. But this one took it as far as possible and called it a semi-auto weapon to try an capitalize as much as possible on the "Assault Weapon's are evil" craze going on right now.

Yellow journalism at its finest.

Well, no, I've never seen a man armed with a semi-automatic weapon riding a bulldozer before.  I have on several occasions seen men armed with semi-automatic weapons driving them, however.

fark, it looks like at least one of those revolvers is a Colt, no doubt destined for a smelter.  We need to get some kind of program going for C&R FFLs to buy old collector weapons from police seizures.  It's a win-win.  The guns end up off the street (and being a C&R FFL, are actually registered) and the government makes some money.

Bulldozer?
no.
Backhoe?  Like every damn day back in the 80s.

Sure was nice when everyone switched to building giant sheds to keep up with each other instead.

Jeeze lilbjorn, dontcha know that as soon as a person does something, they lose the title "Responsible Gun Owner." Therefore, no RSG has EVER done anything bad. It is always isolated incidents perpetrated by crazy people.

Study it out

Actually, there's a bill moving through the Arizona legislature now that would require any gun confiscated by or turned into the police (excepting illegal or unsafe ones, like zip guns, illegal full-auto, etc.) to be transferred to an FFL and made available for sale rather than being destroyed. The profits would then go to the police.

As a C&R FFL holder, it saddens me to see the number of old guns going to the smelter. While the bulk of old guns are probably crap, there's a lot of historically interesting ones that should be preserved.

And 300 million+ guns today did nothing, but let's keep pretending that they're all ticking time bombs...

Why bother saying that it was a semi-automatic pistol?

If it was a revolver, you'd probably say it was a revolver.

If it was a derringer, you'd probably use that term.

If it was a single-shot target pistol, you'd probably describe it that way.

What kind of pistol is left that isn't semi-automatic, and you don't use a specific term for it?  Why not just 'pistol'?

You might as well have described the suicidal man as a 'bipedal', or that he drove in a car 'with wheels'.

What was special about this circumstance that the term semi-automatic, all thirteen characters and a hyphen, were necessary?

2013-04-02 04:45:07 PM
Well, I usually keep my pistol on me when I'm not at home, as leaving it in the car is usually not a good plan.  So I guess on the occasions I've helped my parents out with mowing their lawn I've had a semi-automatic weapon on a tractor technically, sure.

Can't say I've ever threatened to commit suicide while doing so, though.

FTFA:  According to the criminal complaint, Tom Wilson sent text messages to his boss saying that he was "going to kill himself" last Friday.

Too bad. I like his song "Church League Softball Fistfight." Maybe his boss was going to make him get a credit card.

Up here in Socialist Canada we call them "firearms" because the word "weapon" is inflammatory by definition and definitely by it's use in the American media. Since when does having your guns in a cardboardbbox mean they are "positioned", like he taped them under sinks and beds around the house in preparation for a Hollywood style shootout? Man your news media is farked down there fellas.

Makes it sound scarier and miltarier and bannier. I'm surprised it wasn't 'black semi-automatic assault pistol with super deadly full metal jacket bullets and standard assault clip in an assault holster bought from an assault store'.

Semi-automatic weapon.

Bulldozer? Not that I can recall. Big Kubota Diesel tractor while mowing rat-infested fields? All the time. The rats would invade to feed on produce and livestock feed and would overrun the farm. Rat poison was out as the dogs and cats might have been poisoned. So our answer was to have a shotgun (usually a Remington model 11 semi-auto)  armed person riding along while the driver mowed, keeping watch for the rats (and the occasional rattlesnake) that fled from the mower. Quick, clean, and they never knew what hit them. The dogs and cats would move in and mop up what was left of the infestation and we would be rat free for the next two months until the population bounced back.

ZOMG SHORT BARREL CONCEALED WEAPON. RAMPAGE IMMINENT. Send 40 ATF agents to his house immediately in full tac gear, he may have taken a picture of a kid holding it or a youtube video!

Seriously thought John Browning was a genius of his time and even thought he built that Baby Browning with Saive, I still consider him the mastermind of pretty much everything we use today.
