"Do well in school, or your parents will starve and you'll be on the street."

Yep, education problem solved

How very Jesusy of them.

Between this and the mop sink mistaken for a Muslim foot bath by the state legislators, I'd say it's high time Tennessee get its own tag.

2013-04-02 02:25:00 PM
I figured this thing was dead on arrival, especially since Campfield started it.  But of course a Republican controlled government decided to pass it.

YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG.

These dying spasms of the GOP are getting more disgusting than the spurting blood and puss, leaky putrefaction that normally occurs with dead and dying bodies.

They're all guts, no glory.

Well, those poor, welfare recipient parents could avoid all this by signing up for parenting classes or getting private tutors for their kids.

Tennessee and poor children children seems redundant

They really do want to turn all of the red states into African hellholes except with white people. Hey, you guys, protip? When you wage a horrible colonial and imperial campaign, you're supposed to wage it against other people, not yourselves.

I guess their corporate masters in TN told the legislators "we need more desperate, undereducated workers", and this is how they are going to go about creating them.

What's next, debtor's prisons and child labor laws repealed? Every time I see a story like this come out of TN I think "thank God we got out of there before they turned this crazy".

I have trouble lately figuring out where I stand on the GOP's supports of laws like these. On the one hand, these laws make me want to puke they are so disgusting and vile, so I don't want these laws to ever get proposed. On the other hand, if the GOP keeps making these kinds of insane proposals, there's a chance they will get hammered even harder in the next election cycle nationally and turn themselves literally into the party of the South, so I do want these laws to be proposed.

crab66: Every single day. I am less likely to ever vote for a Republican in my lifetime.

Come on. This law would be fine if they just let the kids work instead of going to school. your grades suffer,  you have to do janitorial work and learn a "work ethic." It's a win/win situation. They can buy food from a GOP sanctioned shop as well.

Once again, Poe's Law comes out smiling and takes a modest bow.

The 50,000 times the Bible COMMANDS you to give alms to the poor, it never once attaches any strings (nor, for that matter, does it exempt poor people from that command - food for thought). As a matter of fact, I seem to recall the Biblical author saying something about giving a poor person even the shirt off your back, should they ask for it.

The orphan, the widow, the immigrant ("stranger in your lands" - which actually suggests illegal immigrants as well), the poor, the hungry, the thirsty - the Bible says nothing about stiffing the unmotivated.

Not that these farkheads care what the Bible actually says, and not that we should care how the Bible jives with American law.

As amended, it would not apply when a child has a handicap or learning disability or when the parent takes steps to try improving the youngster's school performance - such as signing up for a "parenting class," arranging a tutoring program or attending a parent-teacher conference.

Because a parent on welfare can easily take time off to attend a parenting class, arrange and pay for a tutor, or get to a parent-teacher conference.

Why don't they just record a hit rap song so they can get out of poverty.  They're such musical people, after all.

This is blatant class warfare.  Citizens should be running these capitalist legislators out of town at gun point.

More so than ever, the "R-" prefix added to the various representative's names were completely superfluous.

Coming from the same paranoid ignorants who thought that a mop sink in the state capital men's room was a Muslim foot-bath. And this is the same legislature famously closeted gay man and self-loathing moron Stacey Campfield belongs too.

TN is such a pretty state and I know some damn good people, like the best people I've ever known. It's sad they have such retards and tools in their Government.

Turner also said the bill apparently does not apply to home-schooled children and, "I guess a person who wants to get around this just can say 'I'm home schooling my children'."

Looks like the Republicans have put their usual level of forethought into this bill.

2013-04-02 02:58:04 PM
Wow.

I'm going to guess that this bill is under the umbrella of 'Education Reform'...although it would be cool if in a  purely unguarded moment the sponsor just went with "Everything Bad Begins With The Poor"

At this point, even pre-ghosts Ebenezer Scrooge would tell the GOP to chill the fark out.

I really have to wonder how ANYONE could vote for the Republicans. I can somewhat understand voting against Democrats, but why FOR Republicans?

Republicans claim to be the fiscally responsible party, yet they (Reagan and Bush 2 in particular) skyrocketed the deficit and spent like drunken sailors, while decreasing revenue; the DEFINITION of fiscal irresponsibility. They claim to be the party of small government, but they constantly advocate putting the government in your very bedrooms. Hell, they claim to be Christians, but advocate everything Jesus fought against.

I could sort of understand it if you tied it to school attendance, but tying it to grades is insane. But anything that helps minorities must be destroyed, according to the GOP.

They're aimed at all children of low socio-economic backgrounds, i.e. all races.  This is class warfare and I wouldn't mind one bit if the poor turned it into a violent class war.  We're overdue.

I'm always amused at how the solution for any problems with welfare is always punishment. Never "Teach these people how to properly budget" or "Invest in some job training for them" or "Do whatever you can to allow their children to break the cycle of poverty". No it's always "You suck for being poor".

It's God's will. If you're poor, well, that means you suck in the eyes of the Lord. God rewards good people by showering them with riches.

Because it's not about ending the cycle of poverty, it's about deepening and widening that hole. It's whipping the slaves on an institutional level. Capitalism "functions" best when there's a massive base of people who will work for nothing and have no prospects; these pieces of filth want more people in that situation, and if they're people who are not of an approved background or skin color, so much the better.

Proverbs 21:25The desire of the sluggard kills him, for his hands refuse to labor.

Thessalonians 3:10For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.

Those Protestants didn't just pull that work ethic out of their collective asses.
There are a whole bunch more just like those.
