Will they now have direct control over their territories?

Do you ever think that other world leaders ever look a Putin and think "dang, wish I could do that."

I am still surprised that he still has such a grip on Russia.

It won't work most places.  Russians have been oppressed by governments since the 1300s, minimum, and it has been almost constant since that time.  It has become so much a core Russian value that they have the word 'nichevo' which roughly means nothing to be done about it, can't be fixed, can't be helped, it's just the way it is.  I think that the fact they have a single word for that says an awful lot about how Russians view things, including government.  Totalitarianism is just the way it is.

They've really pioneering a new form of fascism.  Control a few key sectors of the economy, run a few sham elections, allow a few protests, and there you are.  Much easier than Soviet-style stuff of run everything, allow no protests, allow no elections.

I think the Daily show bit on Russian's reaction to the meteor explosion captures this mindset pretty well (even the frickin' cows are 'nichevo')

All the totalitarianism but none of the communal support. It's gonna be even worse than "living" under Stalin.

The law allows each of the country's 83 regions to repeal direct elections of governors, introduced just last year in a concession during a wave of protests by Russians fed up with Putin's dominance and demanding a stronger political voice.

Truly, this is a huge step backward in the year-long history of direct elections for Russian governors.

It's Russia. They're still unclear on this whole "Don't let the same farking guy stay in office indefinitely - even if he changes his title."

Except that it is:  It's a Steyr AUG, adopted by Austria in the 1970's, and a perennial favorite of movie prop departments since the early 1980's  looking for a "futuristic" gun to put in their films.

During the 2004 presidential campaign, the campaign of George W. Bush routinely required all attendants at its rallies to take what some have called a "loyalty oath". Those who refused to take the oath were not allowed to attend the rally. The "loyalty oath" was actually a pledge of endorsement. These endorsements were used during some of the campaign rallies in 2004. The Bush campaign asserted that the oath was valid because the president was conducting a partisan campaign event. Opponents countered that the oath was intrusive to individual conscience, somewhat fascist in nature and denied general public access to the president.

Heil George. Heil Vladimir. Heil Hitler.

Ничего is just the word for nothing. A lot of Russians think nothing can be done about the system, but it's not like a special word for the situation

Seriously, what the hell is up with this phrase in so many gun safety advocates? What's wrong with using the commonly accepted terms "finger" and "trigger" so you don't sound like a drooling 2nd grade moron?

Maybe it's just something indicative of Russian culture.

They are a hardy but miserable people, living in a harsh and brutal landscape. The only kind of cultural value system that could possibly emerge from such unforgiving extremes is authoritarianism. Even before the Soviets, Russia was managed by very brutal and very strict hierarchies, right down to the smallest unit that an individual man could control: His family. All families were paternal dictatorships, a microcosm of the crushing reality extended by the state.

Maybe they don't know freedom. Maybe they don't understand or comprehend it much. They are a culture historically fraught with ruthless control so they have become accustomed to the system that makes sense to them. Even when given Democracy and liberty, like a gyroscope they will within a generation or so just reassert back to their old ways of draconian social orders and oppressive obedience. It's just their way.

At least, that's my theory.
