Just one question in the new design: didn't we move to the stay-tab partially because of littering concerns?

Littering, shmittering, those things were a danger to any unshod foot.

I hear that Sly Fox brewery was only going to make minor changes to their cans, but then they were just like "Screw it. Let's go all the way."

2013-04-02 12:47:17 PM
It's called a pint glass, dipshiats.  And maybe they should be more focussed on the quality of their product than the container it ships in.

Not necessary.  Everyone knows you poke another hole in the can if you want to shotgun it.

Two questions, actually, if you count "Is this just an April Fools Day joke?"

Hey, Sly Fox is right near my house.  They make good beer.

First clue: "When Olympia, Pabst, Old Style, & Hamm's were all the rage in beer world..."

And no, lawsuits from barefoot people stepping on discardable pull tabs is what made the change, not worries about littering.

That design looks terrible.

1) littering.
2) drunk people with sharp metal circles to deal with.
3) awkward shape to drink from. The beer will go way off to both sides.

The advertisements that I really don't understand are the ones that focus on how cold the beer is (or gimmicks like labels that change colors when cold, etc.)

1) Any beer can be really cold.  Any beer can be warm.  This is nothing inherent to the beer and is completely in the control of the consumer.

2) If the main selling point of your beer is that you can make it so cold that you can't even taste it, that makes me much less likely to want it.

Actually, it's a pretty damn good brewery.  Maybe you should judge them more by the quality of their product than the container it ships in.

I suppose I might as well add that it's more likely to spill. A glass is great at home or at a bar, but one of the big benefits of cans and bottles is their portability. If people are going to be standing up and goofing off, regular old cans and bottles are great.

Use a church key to put a ventilation hole in your standard pop top and it will go down really quickly.

Or just shotgun it. That's what your really after.

This will make it more likely to spill when trying to frontside grind an empty swimming pool on your skateboard while taking a swig of beer.

Quality only matters after the consumer tastes your beer. Unfortunately they have to decide to buy it before they taste it. Even then, and a lot of beer snobs will crucify me for this, beer is beer. I like a nice craft brew beer but when you are talking about cheap, mass produced, hot weather, light beer, quality isn't even a selling point. Novelty in packaging is a MAJOR selling point though. hell even craft beers go for interesting packaging. There is nothing superior about old style bottles or foil labels but most craft beers employ them.

On hot days out by the BBQ I vent all my "lawnmower" beers with another hole in the top of the can. Makes 'em go down nice and quick.

/gotta drink 'em before they get warm, right?

My go to cheap beer is from the brewery that I worked at.

My go to beer is anything made by these guys

Their 'Extra Special Bitter' is fantastic and they make a nice Russian imperial stout too.

Unless we're committed to putting the removable lid back into the can like my dad used to do with his Coors Original Banquet beer, then let's roll with it.

I remember Coors coming with the 2 hole top you pushed in with your fingers.

If you put the best beer in the world in a shiatty container it will not sell.
If you put shiatty beer in a good container it will sell.

People buy what looks good on the shelf. A 'new and improved' container is a solid business choice. As an example about ten years ago honey was a hot additive in beers. It wasn't long until the breweries realized that they could add a liter of honey to a giant vat of beer, put a cartoon bee on the label and print 'Brewed with honey' on the box and make more money than if they added enough honey to the beer to actually change the taste. You can tell yourself that you are above it all and that appearances don't fool you but you would be wrong. I worked in the packaging industry, I know all the tricks, and yet I have bought a bottle of rum from a brand I don't like simply because it was in a 'special' anniversary edition shaped bottle.

Heineken has been using the 'look at our cute cans' sales tactic for years here in the Canadian market. I'm not sure how effective it is, but they're hanging on despite the fact it tastes like animal fur.

I thought they stopped using pull tabs because people would drop them into the can and end up choking on them while drinking.

sadly heineken has phased out the funny keg-cans and now just use a wide can similar to a foster's.

which is a shame because the heiny keg-cans were great for making alcohol stoves for backpacking...

I had a nice one.  Two gallon funnel plus about four feet of tubing and a ball valve, much like in the pic.  Mine also had another foot or so of tubing after the valve, so the handle wasn't right next to my face.  It would hold an entire six pack.

Modern cans are a superior packaging to bottles in every way. But its mostly crappy beers that come in cans, so its sort of a catch 22. Plus canning equipment is an expensive investment compared to bottling equipment, so smaller breweries are happy to perpetuate the myth that bottles are better.

You know, maybe it's the packaging, and maybe it's the situation where I'm having one... but I've never had a beer in a red or blue plastic Solo cup that tasted horrible.

You know, they had those drinking hats from the 80's that addressed this issue well.  If haven't tried one, they work by siphoning two beverages at the same time.  Which I found to be a lot of liquid in a quick hurry.

/I still have one, found it in my basement
