I bought one of  those avalanch beacons. That way if I ever lose control of my hover-round and crash into the shelving they'll be able to find me underneath all the piles of cheap crap.

I don't know, given the cheap Chinese crap that WalMart sells, checking something to see if it works might not be that bad an idea.

Well I have had a Spot for years now but don't have the latest version of Sim City. I know that my Spot works well. I can even put it in the trunk of my Goldwing (note that the trunk lid is not metal) and it still sends out the signal. It does miss a signal every once in a while, but it's not often enough for me to get upset about. Say one or two signals in a days worth of tracking and usually there's an explanation like in a covered area, etc. I have never had to use the emergency feature, but just having the Spot on did come in handy when I was driving cross country and broke down outside of Phoenix. My Dad was able to get my exact location and find a tow company and a mechanic close by. And while I would hope I never have to use the 911 feature I know it's there. As with anything your mileage may vary.

That you have one that works says very little about the overall reliability of these devices.

I dunno, my extremely rare visits to Walmart have tended to leave me with the desire to hoard firearms.

And so would one person with one that doesn't. Problem I see is that people who have "things" that work don't usually run around touting this fact since that's what it's supposed to do. But people who have one fail immediately start complaining. The market will tell though. If the majority don't work then it would be safe to assume they wouldn't be in business long. So like I said in my post above, your mileage may vary.

Mine works, and all the people I know who have them also have working units. The biggest problem I have seen is one owner I know seems to be having trouble remembering how to work it. And in my opinion it's pretty darn simple but she just can't seem to get the hang of it (she has one with smartphone capability).
