So you're kind of an asshole then?

Why...why is there photoshopped smoke/steam coming out of the hole in that picture? This was posted yesterday, so I'm just going to go ahead and assume this is a hilarious archaeological April Fools' joke. Ross Gellar and Indiana Jones are laughing their tits off at it.

That's a digital reconstruction of what the place used to look like. The vapor is based on some accounts that mention a vapor coming out from the gate.

They think the found the location of the "gate to the underworld" that the Greeks and Romans talked about. Pretty cool actually.

I was puzzled by how one would throw a sparrow, but I am reminded that some people juggle geese.

No, what is in Detroit is Hell's Anus, we used to think it was a Hell's Mouth, but that proved to be in Sunny Dale, California.

How did they build the entrance if the vapors killed anyone who got close to the opening?

Well in Greek and Roman mythology everyone went to the underworld, however where you ended up in the underworld depended on how you lived. So a bad person would end up in what roughly corresponds to hell. However a good person would just end up in another part of the underworld.

What a load of horse hockey! I've been to Hell's gate. Knuckle-headed "Byzantines" built a chapel there.

The Caves of Heaven and Hell (Cennet ve Cehennem)

Kick-ass trip actually. Hard, and hot as hell getting down to the cave entrace. Down in the cave it was cold as fark. Free Efes , FTW!

Cerebral Knievel: Gate to hell? I dont think the Greeks had a Hell? Everyone went to the same place when they died.

Everyone went to Hades, the Underworld, ruled by Pluto (not the Roman Pluto, mind). Hades is NOT hell. Sure it may have a few beasties guarding its gates (Cerberus springs to mind, among other ones), and you can hardly call it a friendly place, but Hades was not Hell. Unless you assume that everyone goes to Hell and there is no heaven...

There were a few exceptions.  If you were really, really bad you went to Tartarus, and if you were really, really great you went to Elysium.  But most people ended up in Hades.  That was one of the big selling points of Christianity--anyone could get into heaven.

In The Natural History (book II, chapter XCIII), Pliny the Elder mentions this exact same cave:

...the deadly Exhalations in some Places, either emitted from Pits when they were sunk, or else from the very Position of the Ground ; present Death in one Place to the Birds only (as at Soracte, in a Quarter near the City) ; in others, to all other living Creatures, save only Man : yea, and sometime to Men also, as in the Territories of Sinuessa and Puteoli. Which damp Holes 1 , breathing out a deadly Air, some call Charonece Scrobes, or Charon's Ditches. Likewise in the Hirpines' Land, that of Amsanctus, a Cave near the Temple of Me- phitesy into which as many as enter die presently. After the like Manner, at Hierapolis in Asia there is another such, fatal to all except the Priest of the great Mother.

I don't know what he found, because, when I went there it was gated off and had an explaination, and explained that priests used to throw sacrifices in there and that recently a tourist went into the cave and died. That was 5 years ago.

Anyways everyone has always known that there is a site there where there is a toxic cave. Nothing new there

thank you folks.. that was all pretty much my point about the name of the article. and this thread, that considering the origins of the culture that made this thing, to call it the "Gate to Hell" is at the least, disingenuous., and at the worst, out right trolling.

Really? The fog is what tips you off to 'shooping present? Not the pristine white marble in-ground pool and gazemo with razor straight edges and crystal clear water plopped down amidst rubble in the middle of some forsaken valley in the middle of nowhere?

Hell, you could argue that "Gate to the Underworld" sounds more ominous, if not just correct. I dunno, Hell doesn't sound that scary. As a modern greek stand-up comedian said, if Hell's where hookers and people who do blow go, that's where I want to go. Hell is demystified.
