The Leafs are playoff bound, but they're not going to win the Cup. Reimer and Scrivens have done a fine job. Build on this year's success over the off season and come back that much better next year. I see no reason throw away good prospects and picks for Kipper.

I guess they are going to secure the 1st overall pick with this move (and the eventual trade of Kipper)

2013-04-02 09:57:07 AM
Why don't the Blues want to make the play-offs?

Also, that Kipper-to-Toronto rumor has BS written all over it. If nothing else it is a ploy to get Vancouver to come down to earth a little on Luongo.

Pope Larry II: I guess they are going to secure the 1st overall pick with this move (and the eventual trade of Kipper)

You severely underestimate (overestimate?) the Avs.

I don't want Ryan Clowe to be a Bruin. We already have enough big guys that can't score (Seidenberg and Boychuck are prime examples).

Finally.  Rebuild was long overdue.  Now draft better!

Unless Boumeester can play forward or somehow prevent Halak from injuring himself when he's not letting in soft goals I'm finding it hard to get too excited over this move.

They're just paying homage to Atlanta's gradual rebuild after the Civil War in 1865.

The fact that the Leafs are playoff bound this year is shocking. At the start of the season I was envisioning another terrible campaign. But they have definitely exceeded my expectations, and it looks like we're actually going to have playoff hockey in Toronto!! Cannot wait! But yeah, nobody expects a real Cup run this year. At least this pretty young team will gain some valuable playoff experience (even if it is really, really short lived).

Leafs should just ride the goalies they have and give them the playoff experience they need.

Last time Kiprusoff won a round?  Why when the Leafs were in the playoffs!  That's some 'playoff experience' there.

Same happened with the Kings. After many years of not making the playoffs (still remember that 7 game series vs Detroit from the early 2000s) they made the playoffs in 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 only to be bounced in first round by Vancouver and then Sharks. Those short trips gave experience to the young core of players (Brown, Kopitar, Doughty) and veterans were added every year in key positions (Williams, Scuderi, Mitchell, Stoll, Penner). After the 2011 loss to the Sharks in first round the team made the big move and got Mike Richards and Gagne thinking that they were needed to solve the lack of scoring problem. Gagne didn't work out as planned and at the deadline they got Carter on the way to first Stanley's Cup.

Right now they are still the youngest team in the NHL and the core is signed for long term. Sure, they're going to lose some of the role players and some of the young, puck moving d-men in the coming offseasons (especially Martinez) but they've got a bright future.

During the playoff less years here in Kings' nation, the Leafs were one of the most entertaining team to watch come playoffs time because the electricity in that arena is amazing. No matter what haters say, Toronto in the playoffs is good for the league as a whole.

As things sit now, Toronto would be going against the Jets in the first round.  There's a better than slim chance we could be seeing multiple rounds in Toronto if the standings hold.

Don't tell Leaf fans, any time they are in the playoffs they think they're going to win the Cup. The party around their first home playoff date will look and sound like a Stanley Cup parade in most other cities.

I am not all that surprised with the Leafs pay this year, they had a good core fo guys to build on. Their goaltending has been adequate and they appear to have a stud in Kadri.

Now if you had said that the Habs would be in the playoffs this year, I'd have laughed at you. But leading the division? I'd think you were on crack.

That would likely be for the best.

Tank tank tank.  Still only the 25th in league standings as of right now - surely we can suck our way down to a top 3 draft pick.

I personally think the bigger shock is how well Kadri has been playing.  3/4 of the way through the season, and he's a top-ten player in the NHL.  Who honestly predicted that?

I think Burke deserves a lot of credit for how the team is playing right now. But I also think Carlyle has been a hugely important change. Ron Wilson was a terrible coach who couldn't motivate his players. Carlyle seems to get the best out of what he has in the dressing room.

Couldn't agree more about hanging on to Kadri. I figured he would turn into a third liner. He is so much better than I figured he'd be. And a lot of credit again has to go to Burke for not rushing him into the NHL.

Everyone says that, but everyone forgets that for the Habs to do terrible last year was a fluke and a surprise.  I believe there was some toxicity in the dressing room last year, with gomez gone, theirren coaching, and replacing some older players with some youth (their avg age got younger). that's changed.

I saw him with the Marlies too, and it was obvious that he was a cut above most people on the ice, but I'm really surprised at him.  Good for him - Toronto sports media put an insane amount of pressure on him, and after the initial deflating last year, he has really matured and is coming into his own this year.  I hope to god he keeps it up.

Cardrack Jim: (stolen from twitter)

To 2013 Flames:

It will get worse. A lot worse.

2007 Oilers

It's going to be a lot, lot worse for Calgary than it was for Edmonton.  Take a look at the ages of the 2007-08 Edmonton roster vs. what Calgary's got now.  The Oilers then had Horcoff (28) and Hemsky (24) as established players, with Gagner (18) and Smid (21) upcoming; all 4 players are still key parts of the team now.  Reddox is still in the organization, but hasn't really made the jump he needed to.  And all of that was BEFORE they got started on their streak of 1st overall picks to build with.

Calgary's gonna get a whole lot of 1st overall picks, but they don't have any Gagners or Smids or even Hemsky's to give them something to build on top of; they have to go wholly from scratch.

Due to no power rankings thread, the NHL expanded and alternate points systems standings through Sunday's games.

Notes:

I've created a "magic number" column to show how close or far away teams are from either clinching a playoff spot or getting eliminated.

The formula is similar to the one used in baseball to figure that out:

Max points possible +1 (this year: 97) -Team A point total -Team B points lost (regulation losses x2 +OT/SO losses)

For the top 8, playoff team is Team A and Team B is the 9th place team. Below 8th place, Team A is 8th place and Team B is the non-playoff team.

This week, the Penguins should clinch has they have a magic number of 6.

I'll try to update the link again after Wednesday's games and will keep up the twice a week pace the rest of April.
