I thought the whole point of that show was that they're ALL rednecks - is that wrong?

Haven't watched it. Two episodes of Jersey Shore was enough to satisfy all my "reality douchebags on TV" curiousity forever.

I've heard of this show, but I've never seen it. I'm guessing it's the redneck version of Jersey Shore?

"We are shocked and saddened by the terrible news about Shain Gandee, and those involved in this tragic incident," MTV said in a statement.

Why isn't this listed under the entertainment tab? Maybe the most entertaining thing about that show.

FTA:  MTV said Shain Gandee was one of the most popular cast members on "Buckwild," earning the nickname "Gandee Candy" for his wild stunts and sunny disposition. A second season of the show had recently been given the green light.

So much for that. A third of the cast is either jailed or dead. Can't wait to see what a second season of that redneck train wreck's gonna look like on the tee-vee.

Given that they were 4-wheeling after drinking, I would say a roll-over accident. However, it is a little odd that the vehicle was found upright (though partially submerged in mud) and all three were found inside the vehicle.

/I've had friends die from roll-over accidents while drinking & 4-wheeling
//They were thrown and the vehicle was on its roof.

You thinking what I was thinking? They got stuck deep in a mudhole and sat there with the engine running, and the exhaust blocked, until they died of CO2 poisoning...

I see another related story where they've hauled the vehicle out of the woods and it's intact. So it doesn't look like they crashed in to something and died from the crash. Someone else mentioned OD, but I wouldn't expect all three to die of an OD at the same time.

That's sad! That kid was funny, because he always said he had no reason to leave Wolf Pen Holler. He seemed closed to his family and one time, on the show, he sold candy made from his grandma's recipes... then there was the Redneck waterpark, where they used the hill at his trailer to make a soap slip-and-slide.

Yeah, he was the one I thought would actually be fun to talk to. He just seemed like a normal kid who liked to be near home. I feel bad for that community, because he was pretty popular from the way the show depicted him...

It actually happens more than you would think - several times in recent auto races; they have a panel inside the wheel well that prevents exhaust gases from circulating back into the vehicle. These have been damaged and drivers suffered short-term effects such as dizziness, vomiting, headaches, etc. I'm sure long-term exposure could definitely cause them to die to death.

I can't believe how many Farkers lack basic common sense when it comes to the way vehicles work.  If your tailpipe is clogged/blocked and your windows are closed, you will very quickly find yourself dead.  Hell, there was a story posted here during the last blizzard we had on the East Coast about a kid who was in a running vehicle who died while waiting for his father to shovel the vehicle out of the snowbank.

It's not so much of a stretch.  Warm weather, you've got the AC on circulating air from the enclosure...Get it stuck, start gunning it, the mud doesn't let the exhaust go anywhere but the path of least resistance... and that's into the vehicle enclosure, and within seconds everyone's passed out.

I can't believe your inability to understand how unlikely it would be for 3 people to all be overcome by CM fumes at the same time.

If they were all drunk and sleepy to begin with, I could see it happening.

Alcohol and light CO poisoning also give similar symptoms, often people that are drinking don't realize the increasing feeling of intoxication is from CO.

Yes, you can find CDC studies to back this up .

My guess.  Hacked up/damaged truck spewing it and overcomes them.  Stupidity, not suicide.

My house is heated with oil.  I have 2 monoxide detectors - one besides the garage where the boiler is, one next to the bedrooms.

I somehow doubt the sincerity of MTV.They went to one of the most impoverished parts of the nation and gave money to young adults on the premise they act recklessly. The fact that these "reality stars" are turning up dead and in jail should surprise no one.

couple (three) hunters died round here by running a generator in the garage with the garage door shut. Bled into the house/cabin; the deer chuckled quietly to themselves.

Aside from that, WFT?!?! from what they described it sounds like they just got stuck in the mud, how does that kill you? It seems like the tail pipe could have been clogged, but that should have shut the vehicle down. Failing that I can't imagine someone accidently passing out from CO gas from a car it's pretty harsh.

just a little weird

Hypnozombie

JohnnyC: So wait... they were stuck in the mud and what? Couldn't move? Couldn't breathe? I don't get why they would be dead from just getting stuck in the mud.

Popcorn Johnny: Unless they were stuck for a day or two and fell asleep with the engine running, I don't see how it could possibly be carbon monoxide poisoning.

/always clear your tailpipe FIRST.

My buddy bought a 28' cabin cruiser cheap. The owner and 3 friends all died on board sitting around the dinette table drinking beer and playing cards. It was summer time and they were operating the built-in generator to run the air conditioner, boat buttoned up tight. It was determined that the genset had an exhaust leak. He showed me some police photos of the four of them slumped and sprawled around the table. By the time you begin to realize the CO is working on you it's too late to do anything to save yourself. Add booze or drugs or both and it's game over.

He got a really good deal, though.

Nah, just 99.99% of the time.

That's because the first symptom is the tendency to want to go to sleep.  Very easy to pass it off as exhaustion or fatigue or illness and just go take a nap or go to bed early. That is, when it's a slow production.

When it's a fast production, like we have in this scenario, you simply pass out on the spot.  It's worse than holding your breath because even while you do that there is oxygen in your lungs to be absorbed.  When there's an inrush of any gas that will displace the oxygen, "sleep" happens very rapidly, soon followed by death.

I would hope the cars would have windows that they could roll down or break, From what I've read, the driver's side was less submerged in mud than the passenger side, enough to get the window open.

This was one of this first hits I got when googling about the show: http://couchfiresports.com/archives/43865

Excerpt:
The center of the show is certainly Shain (yes, I believe his name misspells itself). He's Buckwilds Joey. He basically does all the things that they tell you not to do because that's how you get killed.

  Stupidity, not suicide.

The problem is one never knows. We have a strong cultural bias against suicide and many suicides are recorded as "accidents' to make the living relatives feel better. Generally, medical examiners are reluctant to list suicide as a cause of death unless it is clear because they do not want the grief.

LazerFish: I watched an episode or two of this before I got bored (I'm from WV, I had to), Shain was the only one of the entire cast that had any redeeming qualities at all.

I've never seen the show, but from what I've read he was a genuinely nice guy, not at all stuck up due to his show fame, and cared a great deal about his friends and family.  But he's a redneck, so farkers have to trash talk him.

I still won't watch the show.  I despise all reality shows (until we start having public executions of politicians, then I'll be glued to the tv).

As someone who has lived in rural Minnesota, I can understand driving home from the bar at 3 am on a deserted country road. There's no traffic, it's perfectly flat, maybe you drive into a ditch. As long as it's not snowing and the temperature is above zero, you'll probably survive.

But driving off-road in the mountains of West Virginia at 3 am after going to a bar? Damn. I mean just... damn.

In that case, I apologize. I'm an ass but I doubt you are. I shouldn't be entertained by belittling some stranger, just as you shouldn't be entertained by the expressions of grief and offers of condolences from the posters at TMZ, no matter how illiterate they seem.

giftedmadness: actually, MTV has more videos than ever.

You sound under 20.

For much of its first decade, MTV played 10 videos an hour, 24 hours a day, unless there was a special event like the VMAs or Live Aid.

How are they topping that? And don't say that they're still 100% music videos on MTV 8 "The Ocho", because that's a distinct channel from the MTV flagship.
