Sounds like the cage she used was a real piece of crap.  Hope she saved a few bucks on it.  That said, I'm not letting my dog fly.  If I have to move internationally I'll give her away instead of taking all those risks.

Yeah and it was the second time the cat had escaped from the cage. Sorry but what was the airline staff supposed to do. Get a better cage!

Had pretty much the same reaction. I love my cat and would probably cause great bodily harm to anyone who hurt her intentionally, but goddamn...what happened was the owners fault, not the airline. Secure the damn cage.

Pangit: The thing escaped twice.

More the cat owner's fault than the cat's fault. Not like the cat knew what the heck was going on. Just that she was trapped in a cage in the midst of a loud, chaotic situation. Unluckily, she apparently found some literal openings for escape and, being a former street cat, took them.

Sad situation all around.

insano: Yeah and it was the second time the cat had escaped from the cage.

Is reading really this hard for you people? It didn't escape the cage the first time, they made her take it out of the cage to be x-rayed... and the airline only claims that it escaped the cage the second time.

Given the ham-fisted goobers that generally seem to handle my luggage, I have a hard time believing that's what happened versus the guy loading it just bashed it on something and broke it.

All that said, I think her demands seem fairly reasonable. If you're going to allow pets you should be prepared to handle them, including, if they escape and are lost or killed, not just handing the empty cage back to the owner and saying "get on your farking plane anyway... but give me your booze first!"

It must be hard for you, when removed for the X-ray it escaped her clutches and hid under the machine for half an hour. When they got it back in the cage she tied it shut with a wire tie. Then it somehow escaped on the tarmac from the luggage trolly, despite the door being closed and wire tied shut.

So it escaped twice.

Sounds like a shiat cage, or someone seeking revenge for taking an X-ray machine out of service for half an hour.

Ok, so here's what i'm thinking:

1. IATA-Approved Carrier
Google search pulls up this:
182265-web1.www.petrelocation.com

2. FTFA: "On close inspection of the container, it was observed that the wire mesh in the front of the container was bent outwards and pushed out of the main frame. "
I used to own one of these when I had a cat and I knew of only a couple of dogs that were strong enough to force the doors open on one of these and even then, it wasn't because they bent the door, it was because the plastic gave way... There's no way a house cat could bend the metal on one of these...

3. FTFA: "India itself is not a very pet-friendly country"
This doesn't surprise me, i've worked with and known Indians and most of them find the idea of pets disgusting.

Conclusion:  Poorly paid, poorly trained, and poorly treated Indian airline workers who have distaste for pets to begin with are given the task to transport a cat. Instead of following procedures for pets, they throw the carrier in with the rest of the luggage. It goes through the conveyers and sorters where it finally gets thrown onto a loading flat by another poorly paid, poorly treated airline worker who then stacks a few hundred pounds of luggage on top of it. The weight of the other luggage warped and bent the carrier and gate allowing the cat to escape. The cat at this point is freaked the hell out from it's ride through industrial hell and it's already in the loading area on or near the tarmac and escapes and tries to get as far away from the loud noises as fast as it's feet can take it, and right into the path of a moving vehicle...

I'm sure this probably wouldn't have happened had the airline workers A) weren't paid and treated like airlines pay and treat their workers, and B) put their distaste for pets aside and actually followed pet procedures instead of treating a pet like luggage.

You've never actually seen the kind of pet carriers that are allowed on planes have you?  A house cat doesn't have the physical strength to bend the steel mesh.

skozlaw: Is reading really this hard for you people?...

Yeah, I gotta say I'm a little worried sometimes about what passes for reading comprehension these days.

I note the the article mentioned that she added an extra wire on top. Why? Was the cage defective in some way and needed reinforcement? Article doesn't say. So maybe she used an inferior cage, or maybe the luggage handlers were ham-handed enough to pop the door open. No way to know from the article.

Anyway, suggesting that there was anything the airline could do once the cat had escaped is probably unrealistic. Far too many places for a cat to run or hide on an airport. I think once the cat escapes in those circumstances, it's gone.

2013-04-01 01:15:59 PM
Anecdotal evidence has lead me to believe that every pet flown as checked luggage dies horribly. So while I'm sorry this lady lost her beloved pet, and I hope she at least gets a refund and an apology, it's time for her to find another street cat to adopt and move on.

And while it is sad, what is a baggage handler supposed to do to save a crushed cat? Are they trained in veterinary medicine? Are they expected to handle an injured animal that might bite or scratch out of fear?

Are you honestly afraid of the injuries you might receive from a fatally wounded house cat?  Seriously?  That is awfully pathetic.

As far as rendering aid, I can't imagine what that would look like.  Even a vet would just have to walk away.  You can't save an animal (human or otherwise) if it has massive crush trauma.  You just can't.

After waiting for two hours, she watched in horror as footage showed her cat jumping out of a luggage trolley onto the tarmac and being run over by a trolley coming in the opposite direction.

It was her carrier, she put the cat in it and the cat got out and got run over.  It's no one's fault but hers.  No one did anything to save the cat?  What were they supposed to do?  GIve it mouth to mouth?  She is blaming others for her own doings.  Take responsibility honey.
