Probably a .22lr; anyway, something subsonic that had low enough an impulse that wood could deflect it.

If only we'd arm the trees, tragedies like this wouldn't happen.

What taking a shot from a tree might look like:

They'd be tough to regulate, ya know with all of those branches which are out of control.

There's never nothing you can shoot at.  ;-)  Though admittedly it's much harder to know your target and what's beyond it in the dark.

As someone who's been hit by a reverse ricochet I'm getting a kick, etc....

Saw it coming, hit me on the right side above my waist. Felt like someone hit me with a stick (have 3 brothers, I know what being hit feels like) & tore off a 2-3" chunk of flesh, very shallow wound.

.303, in case you're wondering.

Not to be a stickler, but 22lr and longs, are not subsonic (about 1100 fps, in the modern version.) I don't think shorts are subsonic either.

Yo, Imma let you have your article, but this is the best ricochet video EVER MADE:

Wow. While shooting steel at close range with a .50 caliber isn't the best idea in the world, that is still a very surprising result. Also the way they said 'We aren't doing that anymore' makes me wonder how many riccochets they had experienced before they nearly severely injured themselves.

Remember old movies when someone getting shot at would hide behind a piece of plywood and the bullets would bounce off.

2013-04-01 03:09:39 PM
That's hard, wood.

A) What the hell is a "reverse ricochet"?

B) The article didn't say where the tree-shooter was hit (which part of his body). His name is Bunn, so I'm left to assume....

It's illegal to mess with saguaro cacti without a reason.  Some yahoo shot one with a shotgun at point-blank range.  The cactus fell on him, killing him.  The general consensus was he asked for it.

That's what he gets for shooting the giving tree.

A) What the hell is a "reverse ricochet"?

When instead of bouncing off in some random direction, the bullet comes back almost straight at the shooter. In my case it was my friend shooting, I was about 10 feet to his right & behind, the target was about 40 yards away.
It's rare but not impossible.

When I was a kid I used to have a BB gun. One day just for grins I gave it a few pumps and shot it at an old tractor tire that had been lying around for a while and it came straight back and hit me just above my right eye, leaving a nice bump. I still shudder to this day about the consequences had it gone just an inch lower.
