This is not racist.

Here is an example of a Chinese Ikea:

They realized that they can sleep for free so the showroom is filled with sleepers.

Costco in China used to give out free garnishes for their hotdogs until they were inundated with people making a meal out their free garnishes:

Yum.

So, it wouldn't surprise me if Chinese patrons of Vera Wang were trying on clothes for a day and not buying anything.

To be fair, every product shipped over to China (usually to manufacture) gets copied and the original designer is undercut by their own design. So the concern here is legitimate, and I'd bet $500 fees won;t be enough.

A $50,000 wedding dress had better come with more than just the dress.

I think my wife's was under $500 and was really nice.  A cousin of mine's was about $40.

I always chuckle when I hear the term copyrighted clothing design.

like I can't find a million examples of something that looks just like it.

I'm sure there were plenty of women that paid the money to try on her designs.

Boutique designers are a perfect example of businesses that absolutely need strong copyright protections to stay alive.

Public toilets in China don't have TP because it is stolen so frequently most places just stopped providing it.  During the Beijing Olympics they stocked certain restrooms and then had cops stand there to keep the Chinese from going in and stealing it, only foreigners could go in, the Chinese were directed to alternative places to piss.  The central government basically Jim Crowed its own people out of using the good restrooms.

In the markets of Shanghai and Guangzhou you can find a knock off of anything.  Hell give those vendors some lead time and they could likely assemble a knockoff of a Ferrari that has decent build quality.  America has patent trolling as its shady but really big industry, China has knockoffs.  I'm glad to see most of the Shanghiist comments are calling out Stephanie Zoo for acting like this is some horrible anti Chinese action by Vera Wang, it is a reaction to the business climate over there.  Same fundamental reason no intelligent manufacturer opens any kind of serious technical center in China and any kind of manufacturing process you want to keep under wraps is kept out of China.

Oh and go figure, sent the article to a coworker who is from Shanghai.  7 minutes later he replied with a a list of names where you can Vera Wang knockoffs in Shanghai starting at about $500.  He said the thing to do was go to Vera Wang for the good customer service, find out the style you like, and then drive over to the knock off store, give them the name, and buy it on the spot.

Well, china, if it's so upsetting to you, maybe stop sending in your sweatshop workers into the stores to try on dresses so they can see the patterns and replicate them.

Try competing against kind of state run industry or industry where a government official is a shadow partner.  It gets real anti competitive, real fast.

Oddly enough, that research was part of my old job until '01. Did you know Levi Strauss has a trademark on the back pocket stitching ? And yes, the company i worked for, Bugle Boy squeaked by without getting sued after I ( and others ) gave tons of data to Legal proving our back pocket stitching was just so barely different.

Wow, there's a name I haven't seen in a while.  They went belly up in 2001, yes?  I lived in Thousand Oaks until 1996 and one day when passing by a big house in Sunset Hills, my parents said that was the owner of Bugle Boy's home.  Never knew for certain, though.

I don't know why people bother. The people who are thinking about spending $50K on a wedding dress aren't going to go and buy a knockoff. The people who can't afford a $50K wedding dress aren't going to wait around to buy one.

There is simply no-one who switches from counterfeit Hermes bags/Rolex watches/Vera Wang wedding dresses to real ones because of the counterfeit ones being removed from the market or vice versa.

Seriously, other than on TV, where people are amazed at it, have you ever met anyone who didn't know they were buying a fake?

/personally, I like the fake Rolexes better.

valkore: They went belly up in 2001, yes?

Yup. The Banks fired CEO/COO ( dr and rosa mow ) late 2000, new bank brought in CEO turned down 2 offers > 65 million, then went bankrupt. He was holding out for about 110 mill, if memory serves. Went to the bankruptcy hearing and its been a while, but all assets went for around 30-35 million. My vacation/backpay/WARN act  was about 7900, i got about 750. Many others got nothing ( foreign offices/empolyyes and suppliers ) .
