I'm sorry but I'm very skeptical this is THE Thor's Hammer.   Oh, and this little gem, ""It's easy for us scientists to slip into atheism by some kind of default, a work hazard of sorts, but I have no idea how to explain this."  said Lhodgeec N'Dreesun, chairman at the Norse Myth Appreciation Society.     *eye roll*   It's quite possible this was a site of religious worship for the Vikings.

I've worked with Lhodgeec N'Dreesun before, and been quite successful.  But Lhodgeec N'Dreesun will only get you so far.  I prefer to work with my sensei Yumohr.

What he's really saying is, "I want to believe."

As you pointed put possible, probable explanations immediately leap to mind that don't include supernatural forces in anything but an anthropological sense.

There is a possibility that the hammer was a more recent add-on to the myth. You know how the religious love to mix-and-match their Gods

True and I'm not an expert on Norse Mythology so I really don't know much about Thor or his hammer.  And yes, I realize it's April 1, thanks.

that's what made me realize it was a practical joke. I opened up the article expecting it to be an interesting archeology find of an early Norse Thor temple with a great statue of Mjolnir but they were trying so hard to eliminate such practical earthly explanations that it blew it.

There are modern representations as well. They're still used by some of the various Heathen groups for rituals. The one ritual using such an item I saw, the hammer was used pretty much like a Wiccan would use an athame.

I thought the tip-off was first stating how much it weighed, followed by saying it was encased in bedrock.
