(Digital Spy)   Blake Shelton might leave The Voice because he realizes it is damaging his artistic integrity. Just kidding; he's demanding more money and threatening to quit if they don't meet his demands   (digitalspy.com) divider line 42

"Artistic integrity" is a foreign concept on 99% of pop country radio.

Looks like subby didn't read the article.
He isn't demanding more money nor threatening to quit.

So who is that tag for subby?

Does he think he will get the extra money?

If so, I support him. Anyone getting paid primarily via advertisement dollars should try to squeeze out as many of them as possible.

I actually had never heard a song he had sung, so I figured i'd listen to the imbedded song. the google advert at the bottom? a link to an oxy treatment information link. is it bad when when google just assumes if you're listening to country music that you or someone you know is addicted to hilly billy heroin?

2013-04-01 12:32:03 AM
Well, kind of.  He said the only way he would leave is if he asked for more money than the studio wants to pay.  Which is an astoundingly shallow answer, even for him.

He'll get it. He's as big of a country draw as just about anyone right now (thanks in part to his wife but he's great too), and he's great on the show (from my girlfriend). I've "met" him, seen him in concert 3-4 times, and have watched him on other shows. They'd be pretty hard pressed to replace him for a decent price. His personality is perfect for that kind of show.

That's a really good reason to leave any job.  Either they decide they don't want you anymore, or you decide that what they're paying you isn't worth it to you anymore.  I'm failing to see what the issue is here.

Because you're socially incompetent and pay no attention to the world around you?

Seriously, I pay no attention to country music, and even I know that Blake Shelton is one of biggest stars in the world right now.

Country music is its own little world. If you don't listen to country, its not unreasonable for someone to not know who  he is

I know him from "The Voice" and thats it. Never heard a song by him in my life.

Hell, before I did a 1 month stint building cabinets and listening to country music all day long in the shop, I thought Garth Brooks and Hank Williams Jr. were the same person.

I've watched every episode of The Voice and yet I've never heard a Blake Shelton song other than the performances on the show itself.  The guy is very savvy about the business, has the right country persona, and is married to another country superstar (Miranda Lambert) that I had heard of before The Voice.  But I still wouldn't be able to pick his music out from an audible lineup.

However, his name should be recognizable because of The Voice far more than it used to be outside of pop-country music fans.

fusillade762: I don't know what a Blake Shelton is, but he was pretty funny on Fallon the other night:

I liked that a lot.  Who was the unnamed guy besides Fallon, Shelton, and Offerman?

2013-04-01 10:55:58 AM
Kind of interesting.  The spouse and I watch The Voice.  Shelton is highly charismatic and fun, but damned if I've ever heard any of his songs, or his wife's.  This is coming from somone who grew up in Texas (but hasn't lived there for 15 years) and has family there.  I know a lot of outlaw country, Willie and Waylon, Texas country, The Flatlanders, old Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, up through the rhinestone years and into Clint Black and George Strait.  I like the stuff.

I don't really know who Blake Shelton is.  I watch the show.  I realize he's this mega-star in country.  But country is almost so spectacularly beside the point in mainstream American culture it's astonishing.  I realize Taylor Swift is this massive star, but that's a double edged sword.  Good on Shelton - I'll have to check out his stuff on Spotify, but given country nowadays I doubt it will even register with me.

But that's American music nowadays.

Acknowledging a severe generation gap and other possibilities, but her music is absolute pablum.  It's awful.  There's something in her fans that attaches to this inert, mediocre, listless waif and her boring songs.  There's this vaccuum of star power to her, yet she's a star.  Almost like, you too can be a boring, vapidly pretty twit if you like her music.  It's a phenomenon.

They're crass as well. It's just that we hear sports figures doing it so often, we've just learned to ignore it.

He's funny and in touch enough to appeal to younger listeners, but has enough of a traditional country sound to keep the older fans. That's a tough balancing act, but he's pulling it off very well. His Twitter feed makes me think he would fit in well on Fark, it's a lot of drunk posts and jokes about his ass.

o insult needed.  The fact that you think anyone outside of Country music has never heard of Blake Shelton pretty much says everything that needs to be said about your societal awareness.

One thing you may want to keep in mind is because you haven't heard of someone does not mean everyone else lives in the same box you do.  People fly in from all over the world to see the damned dude.

Well, I haven't paid attention to "country" music since it became "new country", and no, I don't know who this guy is. I've never heard his name before, but I don't listen to the radio, I don't watch awards shows, and I don't hang out in shiatkicker bars where they play this "new country" crapola.

Give me some Hank Williams (not Jr.) or some Willie Nelson or even some Roy Clark. That's country music. It's skilled songwriting, too. But this "new country" shiat? It's all crappy watered-down pop music played with a steel guitar and a twangy voice. It's the kind of thing the hicks around here all love, but my girl and I tend to avoid like the audible plague it is.

I'm not a country music fan, but I have seen every episode of Hee-Haw despite being more into dreampop, postpunk, new wave, 80s alternative (when it was truly the "alternative" to the mainstream pop crap), jazz of all types, classical, and new age/world music. Country is low-rung. "New country" is what you listen to when you go to hell.
