Holy shiat.

Yeah, I won't be watching the actual injury. Even just the reaction is kind of disturbing.

steveGswine: Again, he's at Methodist - considering that (back when it was less safe) Methodist regularly put back together Indy car drivers who powdered their lower legs against the Turn 4 wall

No more pain, I promise!

From 0 to Joe Theismann, I score that a Tyrone Prothro.

I don't particularly want to watch the clip again but it seems like a pretty innocuous athletic movement. I have to think there was something else going on there to cause that to happen. Bones are generally pretty strong and don't just snap like that.

Still, kinda makes you want to avoid any non-critical jumping jacks for a while.

Lord Zardoz: If you can shatter your shin and come back in a sport where your opponent will try to kick you in that leg hard enough to shatter it again, then I would assume a basketball player ought to be able to come back too.

Not sure what the toll MMA fights take on the legs, but basketball is one of the hardest sports to come back from a leg injury in. All the jumping and the way you make cuts on the court and all that makes it just as hard (if not worse) than that injury in an MMA fighter, mainly because you play more basketball games (for a longer period of time) than a fighter has fights. I guess it might be better than a knee injury.

hugram: Don't Kentucky fans hate Louisville? Must be a bitter-sweet thing for Drew.

The injury was gruesome. Saw it live with my brother-in-law, while our wives had just gotten up to help his parents to start to set up the dining table for Easter dinner. They missed the injury by one minute.

I did not realize the bone actually came out of the skin until seeing some of the links from this thread.

I hope he recovers wells.

Much as all of Christianity can agree upon the miracle of Easter (even if there are severe arguments over things as basic as the divine nature of Christ and the flavour thereof), we can all agree here that Duke Sucks. :D

(And finally saw it...yeah, at least 1.4 Theismanns there.  Haven't seen that bad of a break outside of horse racing, but at least (unlike horse) humans can be patched up and walk again so long as infection doesn't set in.  Fortunately, as someone noted, he's also at a hospital that has probably some of the best orthopedic staff on the planet thanks to Indy drivers regularly turning their lower limbs into sausage--and not just at Indy, more than a few got transferred by the CART medical teams specifically to Methodist from other hospitals in other cities because the Methodist surgeons have a hell of a lot more experience in fixing limbs in a way they're functional again :D)

Why do people keep acting as if Joe Theismann's legs were ripped from his body and thrown into the stands?

Anyway, I'd be very afraid to be this kid and to have an injury like this. Losing the end of your career to a tackle must suck, but potentially losing your career early because you landed?

Probably because (well, short of Malarchuk, but Clint Malarchuk gets his own very special category for pretty much having his jugular cut on ice and sticking his thumb in the wound to keep from bleeding out) up until the Wade Incident the Theismann injury was probably the worst injury (to a human, anyways) that people had seen on live television. What can be seen cannot be unseen, and all that.

Maybe that's it. McCallum (was that his name?) was a preseason game, Prothro was a college game when Alabama was cheating without the championships, and so forth.

Just knowing that it happened only because of a weird landing...good god, I don't really want to play basketball ever again.

/I'll still be playing tomorrow
//I don't think I move fast enough or jump high enough to create the force needed for that to happen

Well, I simply look at Brandon Roy, even though his knees are not the same as this kid's leg.

He may still be playing basketball if he could have learned to tone his game down a notch. Michael Jordan did it, moreso due to age and lack of explosiveness than injury, but I think Roy could have tried to become more of a perimeter player and shooter, if he had been interested.

I don't know, his knees didn't explode testicular matter all over the place, so it's not quite the same.

God that was brutal, I was watching the game trying to figure out why three players were on the ground and the Duke player was holding his chest, then I saw the replay, dude picked his leg up while he was laying on this back, it was bent down on a 90, and it wasn't bent at the knee, that's all you need to know.

It's weird how little he bled. You would think there would be more blood.

2013-03-31 10:48:07 PM
I'm not going to watch it again to verify, but what I remember from the replay is that when Ware jumped for the block he turned his head to the left (and his body as well a little) to see if the shot was going to go in. He tried to land on his right foot, but came down on it perpendicular to his path and he landed on the outer edge of his shoe. His momentum caused his ankle to roll outward, so all of his body weight came down on that and caused the leg to break between his knee and ankle. It seemed like when he turned to look he forgot he was also supposed to land because right before his foot hit the ground it looked like his right leg went limp, or at least not braced for the impact.

If anyone is brave enough to clarify my theory, please do

I think you'd only bleed a lot if you took out a major artery in a case like that.

No, Theismann didn't even hit that level.  And yes I looked at the GIF... his leg broke in half!

thisiszombocom: how did the injury happen?  im too scared to watch.

i can understand in football when there are 300lbs men hitting you while running at full speed, but in basketball?

ugh, bad sports weekend in general

Best I can figure is that he jumped up to contest a 3pt shot, and came down with most of his weight on one foot, his shoes immediately gripped the floor as he was trying to stop his momentum and reverse his direction, and the force was too much for his leg and it gave way.  It's incredible that the bone snapped without any horizontal contact.

A friend of mine had a similar injury during a football game in high school. It's weird seeing a black dude go ghost white. He also went into weird convulsion like things. From shock I guess.
