Tragically, I doubt Defiance will fill that role, being earthbound and whatnot. But it'll have ugly dickish aliens, so there's that. And a videogame.

/this is still why I PVR old shows with spaceships and stuff even though I've seen most of them a million times - I miss the genre. I like big cool space battles, new planets and things going on that we can only imagine. It's tragic that should humanity develop spaceflight for things other than going to the moon or just to orbit, it won't be in my lifetime.

There's supposed to be a SyFy series called Defender that's going to be a 'space opera' but I haven't seen any promo for it.  Canceling SG-U right when it was getting good was a crime.  Supposedly SyFy is also working on some space based desperado/western type of show, which while it sounds like a Firefly rip-off, I'd be happy to take it.

I don't know how I feel abut Defiance yet.  I wonder if it will be necessary to play the game to get the most of the the show, or if the show is just going to end up being a big advertisement for the game.  I'm hopeful for it, but there is so much that could go wrong.

Funny thing about SGU. I stopped watching near the end and then they cancelled it and since TV seems to be allergic to reruns nowadays (except in the case of terrible filler like "Swamp People"), I never got to see them. And then I stopped caring.

I think Defiance will be a piece of crap. I hope not, but that's where it's likely going. Sci-fi is being watered down a lot for mass appeal, because apparently only people who still have imaginations watch stuff like the various Star Treks (not counting the new one, which was a space-action-movie and didn't have anything at all to say about the human condition and thus does not count, and also had a brewery for engineering because fark you that's why).

Society isn't necessarily getting dumber, but our ability to think outside the box seems to be reduced.

The two things I didn't like about that show:
1) Chrichton hallucinating all the time.  IASA doesn't hire just anybody as an astronaut.  You have to go through psychological screening and shiat.
2) That freaking guy with the half-face mask.  Enough with the melodrama already.

Our equivalent channel in Canada, "Space" is starting to show signs of going that way. They recently rebranded all the bumpers and whatnot to some severely generic shiat. The previous logo (a galaxy) has been replaced by an opaque blue circle (like Oxygen?), and the bumpers remind me of the ones i saw on Sci Fi when I was briefly in the states (a flashing red light at a train station going ding ding, ding ding, with the logo inside it evokes strong deja vu).

Space airs this stupid ass show about makeup designers called "face off" and also airs Castle, despite not being sci-fi and only tangentially related to sci-fi because Nathan Fillion.

One day I assume there'll be no more shows with the word "star" in the title. :(

I honestly do think the connection to the Hensons (Jim's son Brian did the puppetry) hurt this show, in a way, because it led people to dismiss it as a kid's show, or at least not worthy of being taken seriously on any level.

I mean, I'm not saying they shouldn't have.  It allowed them to have aliens on the show that were way more, well, alien than the aliens on Star Trek, which often just looked like some guy with something stuck to his forehead and a weird haircut.

Not sure if trolling or serious. Any of the times he was hallucinating was because of the neural clone jammed in his head or extenuating circumstances. And Scorpius was a decent villain. Crais was ridiculous melodrama, Scorpy was a cold calculating bastard.

Farscape was muppets. Couldn't see passed that.
Stargate SG1 (with RDA) is a personal favorite.
Firefly was a western. Well done but filled with cliches.
I like some science fiction with my science fiction.

One of the few errors the show made was having Scorpius get his ass kicked throughout season three and four on a regular basis.  It took away a little of his mystique.

I know some folks here said they couldn't get over the puppets, and I have to admit, it took me about three starts to finally latch onto the puppets and the makeup (which was horrible in season one).  Once I got into it, though, there was no looking back.

I dunno about his mystique, but it did take a touch of his menace away. Still, the beat downs, the torture, the mollusks, and everything else serve to show you that he's still one tough bastard and will still try to manipulate his way through shiat if he can.

Face Off is a SyFy original, I believe. Which can only mean you either have or are soon to have its seemingly endless parade of ghost derp shows. Because who doesn't love watching idiots jump at every strange noise, every five minutes, for an hour? Multiple times a night. Multiple sets of idiots a night. fark you, SyFy. fark you.

Yes, but then he's SMILING at the end of The Peacekeeper Wars.  I know the Eidolon influence is there, but holy hell, that was incongruous.  He hated both sides equally.

Eh, never saw that he hated both sides equally. Seemed he didn't really care about the Peacekeepers one way or the other, they were just a means to get back at the Scarrans. I always saw the smile at the end of PK Wars as the Scarrans got their ass kicked and wouldn't be recovering well from that since they weren't going to be expanding any time soon after that.
