Repo Man: China downplays new bird flu fears

Oh, I've played this game before. Someone needs to up the infectious-ness trait of the bug while toning down the lethality trait for a year or so.  Hitting headlines this early will alert the Mongolians.

The apostrophe represents the virus inserting itself.

So, right now it's not spreading but the right mutation(s) and the world gets hammered. And we don't know how much mutation(s) that would be.

Not sure if serious? Antibiotics are not effective against viruses.

Heh.  Most definitely not serious.  Even reasonable epidemiologists believe that it's only a matter of time before a new deadly virus hits us.  Things will get pretty ugly really fast when it does.  (And how much would you care to wager that people riot at their local pharmacy for antibiotics?)

yawn
that "deadly" virus thing has been predicted constantly
along with super volcanos
meteor strikes
end of the world

if any 90% killers happen, well, there is zero we can do, and other than entertaining, there really is no point in worrying.

even IF we could detect a lucifer's hammer years in advance, we are decades away from even being close to solving the problem. I guess if we really worried about bird flu, we could nuke all the asian cities and stop it before it happens. (sorry, but your dense populations PLUS pigs PLUS birds = death flus ...)

you do know that SOME of the past plagues were bacterial, right?
PLUS, even against viri, antibiotics can be used on secondary infections which might actually cause death of weakened individuals. (HIV doesnt kill you, weakened immune system allows you to catch and die from ... well everything else)

Exactly when is there NOT a flue season anymore?

I've ready about 15 self-published (separate authors for the most part) Kindle zombie novels and this story gives me the creeps.

The disease always starts in China in those books.  Always.

But the most likely scenario for a major event now is viral. And if something like the 1918 flu were to hit now, our health care infrastructure would likely be so overwhelmed that antibiotics would either be in short supply, or non existent. Let's hope that by the time another lethal virulent virus comes along, there will be effective anti viral drugs.

The problem with using antibiotics like candy is that it also harms both beneficial and neutral body flora that out-competes parasitic/actively harmful bacteria, and it also drives artificial evolution of bacteria and fungus. Antibiotics are rapidly becoming less effective due to the attitude that "antibiotics fix everything!"
