Since it's Reddit, I'm presuming the call to act like human beings is met with a response of mostly calls for him to STFU, with a few death threats with oddly precise details of his residence.

I can't get past the term "feminism sympathizer."  It's just so HUAC/McCarthy-esque.

Not being sexist? Good. Using  Adria Richards to champion that cause? Bullshiat. While there are a lot of genuine issues in society, Adria Richards got upset and took to twitter because two nerds told each other a dick joke or something and she heard it. If you can't handle two geeks tittering to each other in a crowded room then it's your problem.

Probably the thread would fill with self identified progressives calling feminism a sexist female supremacy movement with no understanding of feminist ideology or history. But what else can you expect from a bunch of college dudes?

Probably.  The main pages are incredibly sexist and very quick to defend their right to be as sexist as they want.  These are people who also defended to the death a guy who ran jailbait subs and subs with dead kids as being a pillar of the community and were very pissed someone exercised their free speech against him.

PZ Myers went and alienated half the atheist community by doing pretty much the same thing (sub Rebecca Watson for Adria Richards).  It hasn't happened yet, but you'll be able to see when the tides shift on this issue when you see a well-known, well-liked, levelheaded Redditor get banned for merely questioning why shiat like this is necessary.

There were no real winners in that whole scenario.

Adria Richards? What she did was wrong, stupid, and more for her self aggrandizement than any actual offense (given that, I believe, she's made dick jokes on her twitter. And was playing Cards Against Humanity later at the conference?)

The internet response to her was beyond the pale and assinine. Yes. What she did was wrong. Death threats are/were not really the appropriate response to that. And at least a chunk of the people lashing out of her were, I think, doing so out of misogyny (And not just because what she did was f*cking wrong).

I'm tired of the sexism too. Adria Richards is obviously a misandrist, as are her rabid man-hating supporters. And none of them can take a joke.

Not to mention she has made dick jokes on her twitter. Adria is a crazy person with a serious serious hero complex, she thinks she is a Joan of Arc. I bet her company was looking for the first excuse to get rid of the nut case. If anything she has done more harm by the way she reacted for women in the tech industry than if she did (and should have) done nothing.

Apparently, this guy doesn't get it.

What this Adria person had done was attempt to foster a climate of fear within the tech community. People should not have to be in stark raving terror that anything they say, do, or even think can somehow be twisted into some sort of sexist overtone and then suffer a retaliation that is way beyond what is called for. If someone is snickering about "dongles", then simply ask them to knock it off. Whining to some people in high places and getting the guy fired from their job (especially in this economy) was vicious, cruel, and extreme.

This guy was a father of three. This woman was too self-centered to even care for a friggin' cat! And the tech that was fired was at least a contributing member to the tech field. All this woman was as an "evangelist" is some freeloader with no real tech skills. And no one gave her the right to be the tech world's Thought Cop. That's for sure.

She wasn't doing her so-called causes any help by her behavior. She was the feminist version of Iran's "Morality Police". She was being the very caricature of a "feminazi" that is envisioned whenever Rush Limbaugh utters the word.

As if her extremist behavior wasn't awful enough, she actually had to go onto the Internet and brag about how powerful she thinks she is to get people fired. That was the last straw as far as the net community was concerned. She was getting drunk on power, and this crazy woman had to be shut down before things really got out of hand.

He can't be that smart of a guy if he thinks chastising a bunch of internet trolls, over the internet, is going to have any kind of beneficial result.  The lesson?  Stop paying attention to anonymous retards on the internet, because they would never say such farked up things if there was a real fear of getting their nose broken.

I haven't seen any part of this story that didn't involve some version of idiocy or overreaction.

The two guys at the conference should've been more professional. The lady overreacted and felt like making a public statement was more important than turning around and telling the guys to knock it off. Her company overreacted. Her supporters overreacted. And the internet tough guys slamming her have gone off the deep end.

All involved sound like retards.

I think the death threats were just made by some 12 year old ITGs while the REAL 4channers were quietly doing their work in the background, getting docs and other bits of incriminating data about her.

Given that she cost someone their job for a joke about forking linux distros in a conversation she was eavesdropping on, I can see why people might be pissed off at her.  Overall the response was worse than what she did though.

I'm against feminist.  Really can't stand any of them.  They cherry pick their facts and arguments to fit their points.  Kind of like a Michael Moore documentary. Anyone who questions their argument is wrong and a misogynistic.  My favorite wrong argument was one I saw on youtube by a c*nt who while good looking, claimed to be a gamer and was ranting about misogyny in video games and she was so completely wrong I couldn't take her seriously.

What exactly is so threatening about the (to me fairly obvious) statement that a lot of places on the internet and in the real life world of technology are incredibly offensive to many women and detrimental to the industry as a whole?

Good Poe attempt. Mixing it up pitting actual arguments in there was a smart move. Throwing in the over the top invectives ruined it.

Really, so making dick jokes on twitter is fine, but if I mention a dick joke to my friend at a tech conference I should be shot in the street, right? Did you even notice how in her blog she provides vague details on what they actually said. The only person to say what was actually said was the guy with 3 kids that lost his job. Adria perceived what she did was protecting a child that wasn't even there from two guys who were not even talking about the girl. This dongle joke was going to be the reason this girl would never be able to work in the tech industry. Adria is a crazy person with some serious cognitive dissonance issues.

Kinda the impression that I got, though having not been there, and receiving scant details about what they actually said at the conference, it's hard to be sure (anybody have a link with more details?). People make juvenile puns about dicks all the time. I don't think that's even sexist (seriously, would it be better to be making jokes about the female anatomy?) just a bit juvenile. Singling them out and unleashing the feminist rage on them for such petty reasons is uncool. Also totally uncool is overeacting to that with death/rape threats etc. -and yes, of course this clearly much more egregious in the "not cool" department.

It's just one of those things where you just wanna shrug your shoulders and walk away from thinking "everybody involved in this whole non-event is farking crazy".
