A college coach jumps from a lower tier program to a more well known program shortly after saying he wouldn't. Wow. Totally shocking and unprecedented. Almost like a school President or AD supporting a coach and then firing him shortly thereafter

The coach that couldn't get his team motivated to beat Harvard? What a coup, UCLA

what a perfect fit. neither side puts a huge emphasis on postseason achievements.

You know Steve, sometimes he'll be quirky.

So the Bruins dump Howland for....Steve Alford? Really?

I think the Gophers might end up looking worse. Tubby Smith's buyout is I think equivalent to the GDP of Estonia, and it sounds like Minnesota has struck out on even the corpse of Flip Saunders. Brilliant.

The Pac-12 will now get to see this charming and likable fellow up close, and learn why he was so popular as a Big Ten player and coach.

Enjoy losing to a 14 seed in the first round, Bruins.

Dude couldn't succeed at IOWA. But I'm sure things will go much better at UCLA.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Now That's What I Call a Taco!: Dude couldn't succeed at IOWA. But I'm sure things will go much better at UCLA.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I'd actually like it if some Indiana fan could chime in with why Alford didn't wind up getting handed the IU job, since he's this legend and former Mister Basketball in Indiana and played for Knight and is a legend as a player, did they forget how legendary his feats as a player were?

Kudos for my hometown boy. But a Wooden he is not.

I'm not an Indiana fan (Iowa fan), but Bob Knight was still at Indiana for almost eighteen months after Steve Alford took the Iowa job.

I'm not 100% sure why Indiana didn't get Alford any time in the following years, as they had two solid opportunities before Alford left Iowa. I don't really think of Alford as a stand-up guy (and in the context of college basketball coaches, the bar is already set pretty low for that to begin with, so that's saying something), so maybe that had something to do with it, even if Indiana hired Sampson (whoops!).

Steve Alford can coach everything important to the game of basketball except loyalty.

Basketball teams in Indiana taking a pass on him isn't exactly unprecedented. Just look how the Pacers passed him over to draft Reggie Miller.

What do you care? You just like watching young men in shorts getting all sweaty with a ball.

The Lobos are going to be much better going forward with their new coach, a pair of dice and a horse that stomps once for yes, twice for no.
