It's called a controlled fire subby and not only does the US military do this, but every single fire department in the world does as well.

If only there was some common instrument carried on essentially all ocean going boats that could be used to put something out at a distance... like a flare or something.

It was probably just for the cameras, but I thought it was odd they went to GQ without any battle gear (gas masks, flash gear, etc.).

Yeah, it was just boring missiles and guns up to that point! Possibly the coolest modern naval weapon.

Man, if they go to war with the ocean the ocean is so screwed! They shot the hell out of it like it was nothing!

At least they didn't lose another Oscar sub in this exercise....
