In and of it self, it doesn't. However, it does make for a good bumper sticker or tweet.

You know... it's really not surprising that the GOP has embraced twitter so veraciously. For a party that communicates through soundbites instead of nuanced policy positions, it seems a natural fit.

We know it won't.  They know it won't.  But through a combination of obstructionism and the absolutely remorseless "spendfest for Republican loyalty" that was the Bush administration, they know that a balanced budget and appreciable deficit reduction are an impossible task.  Plus, it's the kind of talking point that makes mouth-breathers feel smart.

I thought it had something to do with the idea that having the government flood the market with debt crowds out investment in businesses. Or something. Because government debt is an incredibly attractive money-making investment in an era of historically low interest rates, right?

When I lived in San Antonio, the trend seemed to be: Grandparents speak only Spanish (and understand just enough English to get by), parents are fluent in both English and Spanish, but the grandkids speak English almost exclusively and can barely have a convo with their grandparents. Oh, and I've never heard the mixing of  English and Spanish together called "Spanglish" in Texas. They just call it "Tex-Mex," like the food.

A balanced budget means that we're not adding new debt. We still have old debt which means that taxes would need to stay the same in order to pay down the old debt.

So lets be clear, we need a budget surplus not a balanced budget. Part of getting to a budget surplus is cutting where we have waste and where it won't hinder the economy but Republicans refuse to work the revenue side of the equation. The fact that they're fighting tooth and nail to prevent a tax increase on the segment of our population that owns about 70% of all wealth and accrues about 30% of all income should make it clear to even the casual observer what their true agenda is.

Many of our AM radio stations in San Diego transmit out of Mexico (so they can boost the power). Because of this, they have to play PSA for Mexicans. They play them in English and are often unintentionally very funny. Maybe the GOP should hire them to "reach out" to Latinos.

They could tweet in "Special English" (like Voice of America radio). In that way they would also reach most of their English speaking audience...
Besides, it is likely they did not want to encourage Spanish as a language used in the US. Must be a nightmare for them to write something in a foreign language!

Subby here. And USP, you're making a pretty silly leap.  Just because people learn English as a second language, it doesn't mean they don't like to sometimes use their native language. Um... spanish TV stations that play in the US typically have segments in English as well.  Honestly, in my state the two languages blend together pretty frequently, you see commercials on English stations with Spanish lines, etc as well.

This is not a big deal, both languages work by stealing convenient terms and so on from other languages and there's a tacit understanding that regional media will have elements of both.  I'm kind of questioning what you're getting at with your implication that this is something worthy of outrage, if there weren't some tweets with english text would you be complaining that the HTML uses primarily English phrases?  The "separate but equal" bit you're going with is kinda... creepy.

Or visit San Francisco's Chinatown; a friend of mine's grandparents lived there after moving to the US from China in their 20s, never learned a word of English, never needed to.

Latino immigrants show exactly the same pattern of English acquisition as every other previous large immigrant group to this country. It is, in fact, slightly accelerated historically. This is despite the fact that large swaths of this country belonged to Mexico until fairly recently. Many Latino families have lived here longer than there even has been a here, here.

There is zero difference in the behavior of immigrants from Latin countries in terms of assimilation than any other previous group in our history as a nation.

Oh but wait, did you mean they should learn one of the many languages spoken by our First Nation peoples?

If so, I apologize.

It's complicated, but I guess it somehow involves involves either "investor confidence" or reducing the job creator's uncertainty. You know, one of those easily quantifiable things.

How about someone worry about the confidence and uncertainty of the middle class?

That's what Fox News is there for. To point the middle class to the REAL threats to their existence.

Satanic_Hamster: ginandbacon: Cloudchaser Sakonige the Red Wolf: A language they should learn to speak if they're going to insist on living in this country?

Latino immigrants show exactly the same pattern of English acquisition as every other previous large immigrant group to this country. It is, in fact, slightly accelerated historically. This is despite the fact that large swaths of this country belonged to Mexico until fairly recently. Many Latino families have lived here longer than there even has been a here, here.

There is zero difference in the behavior of immigrants from Latin countries in terms of assimilation than any other previous group in our history as a nation.

Oh but wait, did you mean they should learn one of the many languages spoken by our First Nation peoples?

HempHead: MisterRonbo: Cloudchaser Sakonige the Red Wolf: A language they should learn to speak if they're going to insist on living in this country?

Come to Miami, where it's far more useful to speak Spanish.  When I lived downtown, all of the local shops (unless it was a huge chain like Macy's), the local restaurants, 100% Spanish. Or visit San Francisco's Chinatown; a friend of mine's grandparents lived there after moving to the US from China in their 20s, never learned a word of English, never needed to.

Do the funny sounding words scare you? If so, it's actually possible to learn what they mean. Crazy, huh!

In the past immigrants learned English and assimilated into the great melting pot that was America.

Which is why we have Chinatowns.

Mrtraveler01: BraveNewCheneyWorld: Marcus Aurelius: BraveNewCheneyWorld: NewportBarGuy: Can someone explain to me how a balanced budget helps grow the economy?

Taxes can decrease, which means more disposable income for consumers..rich people, who will proceed to stuff it into offshore bank accounts.

So.. you don't benefit from more disposable income?  Look, I agree that the extremely wealthy have unfair advantages, but there's ways to remove their power without harming regular people in the process.  Fiscal responsibility benefits everyone, and I'm not willing to deny benefits to regular people just to spite the rich.

Someone already covered it but balancing the budget doesn't magically make the debt go away, it just stops new debt from being created.

You'll still have to keep taxes at the same rate to pay off the debt or if you do lower taxes, take much longer to pay off the debt.

The central issue is that we're not really having the same converstaion: It's not for these people actually about managing the competing elements of a massively complex economy to achieve increased Pareto efficiency, It's about getting your cock as far up a chicken as possible.

And yeah, once upon a time people did things one way.  Now they do them another. Because they want to. Freedom, I guess it's only for the native-born, eh?

I simply made an observation. I never said it was better or worse. Lotta hate out there on Easter.

/Chinatown was designed by a white man who had never been to China. Again, I am not saying he did a bad job designing Chinatown or a good job, just repeating a fact you can read about in Wikipedia. But he fooled a lot of naive people, so he succeeded in his ambition.

Because this illustrates the central dilemma of the GOP: any attempt to appeal to immigrants or minorities will outrage some part of the base.

True story, although I think most of you won't believe it. While I was in the Army at my first duty station there were a number of spanish speaking soldiers in my unit that had convinced many others that "pendejo" meant something like "brother" "dude" or "friend".  My coworkers would walk around saying things like "Hola pendejo" or "What's up pendejo?" or "Como estas pendejo?". Heck, I'm from the southwest and even I started wondering if I was wrong about what it meant after a while.
