BolshyGreatYarblocks: As with the goths, Steampunk women are fat, amirite?

'No. I don't know. I never see any difference in girls. I only knew two sort of girls. Mealy girls, and beef-faced girls.'

'And which is steampunk?'

'Mealy. I know a friend who has a beef-faced girl; a fine girl, they call her; with a round head, and red cheeks, and glaring eyes; a horrid girl; with a body and limbs that appear to be swelling out of the seams of her blue clothes; with the voice of a clown, and the appetite of a posse. I know her! The wretch!'

'Come,' said Mr. Brownlow, 'these are not the characteristics of our steampunk girl; so she needn't excite your wrath.'

'They are not,' replied Mr. Grimwig. 'She may have worse.'

Is...is that a thing?

If not it should be.

Something with 2-stroke motors too.

Also, screw a costume.  I'd go to look at all the cool brass word.  Costumes are for Halloween, when I can be sexy Kirk.  Sexy. Kirk.

Oldiron_79: Dieselpunk

That's the first I've heard of it, so I took a few minutes to look it up and now I'm not quite so sure.

I love retro-futures and adore art deco/international modern design, so at first it would appear to be something that I'd find to be quite appealing but having looked over the images at

http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/dieselpunk-artworks/

I'm not so sure. With a few notable exceptions they look to me to have taken visual elements of modern and streamline modern design in particular and then thrown them about without any clear understanding of the underlying principles behind the aesthetic. It's very unpleasantly jarring. I suppose that people who like Art Nouveau feel the same way about a lot of steampunk.

TVTropes did mention on the one page I permitted myself to skim lest becoming trapped again the game Gadget: Past as Future, which is reassuring as far as dieselpunk is concerned, because I love the artwork in that.

http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/gadget/gadget.htm

It barely qualifies as a game, but that doesn't matter to me. It's stunning.

That would mean that it matches the social skills of most of the people attending the convention.

I accidentally stumbled across one of these conventions at a hotel I was staying at about a year ago. Bored, I decided to check it out. Not one hot girl in the bunch!  I've never seen so much fat crammed into corsets in my life.

What are the classic/seminal steampunk novels? I've read The Difference Engine but it was kind of meh. The Diamond Age is somewhat in the same vein, but not really steampunk.

Yes well for someone that is too lazy to look at your link you know how steam punk is retrofuture resembling the victorian era? Dieselpunk is retro future resembling the world wars era.

The video game crimson skies is very dieselpunk, as is resistance fall of man. The photoshop where someone made a WWII german AT-AT would also be diesel punk.

With the Nazi resemblence of Imperial stuff Star Wars is slightly dieselpunk. With his love of Nazi parafanalia it could be arfued that Lemmy from Motörhead is a little dieselpunk(not to mention the rockabilly albums with The Head Cats)

I'm a cosplayer, convention geek, and I find some of the steampunk stuff neat, but dear god, the people it tends to attract.

See, I have no problem with people making a character behind thier costume, it just seems most steampunk "characters" happen to be obnoxious assholes. It's people trying to be larger-than-life without the social skills to make it happen. Please, wear whatever you want, just lose the attempted attitude. That or it just attracts the loud and obnoxious ones, either way.
